If you've ever had the opportunity to attend an LDS Girl's Camp, you may have enjoyed a Faith Walk. I hadn't even participated in a Faith Walk until I went back to camp as an adult leader. The premise is that the girls are led in the evening time to various "stations" to meet with someone who will retell or share a faith-promoting story or experience. To make the biggest impact, the girls are instructed beforehand, there is to be no talking during their walk. Additionally, only a handful of leaders or girls are given a lantern to carry. You want to make sure there is enough light to be safe, but dark enough to avoid distractions. Often times, our faith walks began at dusk. Lanterns (like pictured above) may also be strategically placed along the walk to assist those on the journey. You could also make something like this ahead of time for the leaders to carry, or if preferred, one for each girl. Remember, the idea is to create a spiritual ambiance, not a spooky one! After the first year of participating in a faith walk, I found myself being called as the camp director for the next summer. I definitely wanted to have the girls participate in something like that again, although a quick search in google left me hard-pressed for new ideas for a Faith Walk. (In the one we did, it was meeting "Women of Value", aka characters of women in history who represented each value, i.e., Joan of Arc, Sacajawea, etc.) I found I was left to my own devices, and after praying at great lengths, felt I needed to provide an opportunity for the girls to get to know our Savior better. As soon as the idea hit, the rest just came to me. Journey of the Savior is a faith walk in which the young women can meet those who knew the Savior and hear accounts of how He impacted their life. The final scene they come upon is a reenactment of the Savior, during His final hours, praying in the garden of Gethsemane. It was quite a sight to see, and all who were there were touched. I'm pleased that over these past few years, my google searches have turned up more ideas for Faith Walks, as they seem to be catching on. I wrote about our girls' experience on my personal blog, and I'm sure it was a Google search that has led others to send me messages requesting a copy of my Journey to the Savior Faith Walk. So, FINALLY, no more having to ask and wait. {{Click here to download Journey to the Savior pdf}} Good luck! Let me know how it goes! :)

For our class activity we decided to have a Pajama Party. The girls were invited to come in their (appropriate) pajamas or comfy sweats, and to bring a pillow. They were also asked to bring their scriptures, their Personal Progress Books and their journals. We started the night off with The Parable of the Camel's Nose. (see previous post). And yes, we did have our lesson in our tent. When we got to the section on what we can do to keep our "tents" safe and protected- we talked about the IMPORTANCE of PJ'S. In this case PJ's stand for PRAYER, (PERSONAL PROGRESS), JOURNALS, and SCRIPTURES. I created this booklet to go along with our PJ'S theme. Each section has a quote about each topic. (It started off a 1 page document, which I cut into sections, and stapled with ribbon to create the book. The link is at the end of this post.) This is the poem that is at the end of the booklet, and which was the inspiration for this activity: PJ'S When you put your PJ’s on & climb into bed, We want them to remind you of what is ahead. They’re waiting and waiting, so at the end of day, You’ll quickly put them on and then you’ll kneel to pray. But as you pick them up, you’ll notice you’re not through, Please pick up a pen to help with the writing you will do. With your pen and journal, write about the day, Remember all the blessings the Lord gave you today. And now before you settle down, there’s one last thing to do. It’s time to read the scriptures, they will be a guide for you. Now that you are dressed for bed and wearing your PJ’s, Look again and you will find the SPIRITUAL PJ’S. PRAYERS, JOURNALS and SCRIPTURES to protect and cover you well, The Lord will always be with you and the Holy Ghost will dwell. His love will touch your spirit each night before you sleep, And carry you the whole day through if these PJ’S you will keep. Unknown author The girls have journals that go along with their Personal Progress books, but we decided to give them "scripture journals" too. They can use these books to jot down their "a-Ha!" moments as they are reading the scriptures. They are also small enough that they will fit inside their scripture case. We even made PJ'S shirts to sleep in. We then "practiced putting our PJ'S on" by doing Personal Progress Choice and Accountability Goal #1 together as a class, which is: A daughter of God can make wise decisions and solve problems. Read 1 Nephi 15:8; 2 Nephi 32:3; Alma 34:19–27; Ether 2–3; and Doctrine and Covenants 9:7–9. Follow a pattern of regular scripture study and prayer to receive help in making personal decisions such as choosing good friends, being kind to others, getting up on time, or other decisions. Discuss with a parent or leader how regular scripture study and prayer helped you make correct decisions. PJ's Booklet

This week in my summer camp, my class discussed the ocean (for additional ocean resources click HERE). Camp Google was a very valuable resource for the students. We completed an experiment on echolocation by discussing how dolphins see underwater. The Camp Google website explains how to do this, but I added the directions below as well! Echolocation Experiment Materials: Paper towel rolls, tin pan, tape. Students demonstrate echolocation by whispering into a paper towel roll that is pointed toward the tin. A partner points the other paper towel toward the tin and places his/her ear on the roll. Students take turns. You can use wrapping paper rolls as well! My class LOVED this experiment. We even turned it into a literacy center by placing sight word cards at the center. One partner spelled a word while the other listened and tried to name the sight word. Camp Google Whether you are teaching over the summer or if you have little ones at home, this new website created by Google is amazing! The perfect resource to find interesting activities to do over the summer. New activities are uploaded weekly and follow several themes. I used Camp Google this week during my summer camp. Check it out! Sight Word Fishing Game This is easily a favorite in my classroom! Students simply pull fish using a magnetic fishing rod and read the sight words. If they can read the word on the card they can keep the fish! Download it HERE! Other Camp Ideas!
