After over 14 hours of hard labor, Ahlisha looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Susan. You've been here so long." I told her not to worry about it because it's all a part of the job and I didn't want to miss any of her story, and then she replied, "It's not much of a story." I was with Ahlisha at 3 AM in her home for three hours until she went in to the hospital. We didn't know it at the time, but when she handed her birth plan to the nurses, she might as well have included, "Do everything the exact opposite of what I have written on this plan." Despite her desires to have a completely natural birth, she ended up having to get an IV, have her water broken, go on pitocin, get an epidural, and finally have a c-section. Not much of a story, huh? Do you know what your story teaches me? It teaches me that birth is so much more than how it happens. It's about the formation of a family. It's about the selflessness of people and the lengths mothers and fathers are willing to go to bring a tiny little person to life that they don't even know, and who are going to cause them pain, heartache, joy, and a slew of other emotions that will change their lives forever! Ahlisha and Matt wanted to have their baby naturally because they believed that a natural birth was the best thing they could do for their child at that time. As time passed and things changed, they were willing to bend their expectations so that they could get him there safely. Our birth session ended up lasting about 24 hours, a record for me. Do I regret it? Did it make me love birth photography any less? Absolutely not. Being able to witness these families come together to welcome a new little one to their lives is a gift and there's nothing I'd rather photograph than that.
