There’s a vending machine at my workplace filled with all sorts of good things…like Cheetos, for instance. I wish I could say I made a healthy choice and turned away on […]
For my birthday back in February my friends gave me a smash book. It's a beautiful journal in which you "smash" anything and everything you want treasure. My journal sat on my craft desk for months before I started "smashing" my life into it. I was so afraid I would mess it up. It took me a while to realize that there is no way to screw it up so I finally put all my fears aside and began filling it with the Treasures in my life. My book is not complete but I would like to share some of the pages I have started. My first page is memories from my childhood with a quote about being on a journey in life. The bottom right photo is of my bedroom wall as a teen. It was covered with pictures from teen magazines. I figured I've been "smashing" since I was a teen, it just was on my wall back then. I am a huge fan of Somerset Magazines - My favorites are Where Women Create; Somerset Life; Artful Blogging, Art Journaling and Mingle. Each time I get a new issue I cut out pictures from my previous issue and put them in my smash book. This page has pictures of covers from different issues. This page is dedicated to me and my hubby. The picture of us was drawn by my brother's friend the year we were engaged. Finally after 20 years this picture now has a home. I found great quotes on love and marriage and the page already had a calender in the bottom corner. I put a heart around the 9th. Our wedding anniversary. My faith page. I add any prayer cards and bible quotes that I collect. My quotes page. Most of them I have found in my various issues of Somerset Magazines Everything that makes me happy. This page is all about being happy. I have quotes on happiness and autograph cards from Gretchen Rubin the author of The Happiness Project. My page is dedicated to my favorite job. That's being a mom. The Superwomen logo came from this years Mother's Day card from Jacob and Alexa. The picture on the top left is my favorite picture of me and my mom the women who taught me all I know about being a mom. I also have a Mary prayer card, she is also my model for motherhood. These pages are not done. As I find quotes or pictures I will add them to my journal. I also have several pages that I have started but are not close to being finished. So far I have a page dedicated to my grandparents, fairies, butterflies, teacups, coffee, tulips and Harry Potter. All my favorite things. As I finish those pages I will be happy to share. Back in this post, I shared about the super fun Smash Prayer Journals that I created with my Youth Group girls. I think that these are a great project, but they are time consuming, and need to be made by someone with a longer attention span than your typical grade schooler. Here is an adapted form of the project more suitable for a 2nd-6th grader. Start with a smaller notebook- less pages, less space to fill. I picked up one of the small (4"x6") memo books that are super cheap this time of year. Decorate the cover... Make a title page... ...and just like in the original post, smash in prayer cards, notes, photos, etc. I created some journaling topics for Smash Journals- you can get the printable here. To make the topics fit better in the mini journal, I printed the sheets at half scale- you can do that in the print menu in Adobe. Under the Page Handling section, select Page Scaling-Multiple pages per sheet, and then change the pages per sheet to 2. Now both pages will print on the same sheet of paper at half the size. I also wanted to use this book as a place to record the prayers that my students need to memorize. The Catholic Diocese of Peoria has a great set of curriculum guidelines which help teachers and catechist know the most important aspects of the faith that need to be covered at each grade level. They also include vocabulary and prayers. You can find the short curriculum guidelines by grade level here or the full set including the appendix of prayers and vocab here. I printed out the appendix of prayers and cut out the ones that my 5th graders should already know and the ones that we will be learning this year...plus a couple others for good measure. I stuck those in the front of the Smash Journal... ...and added a little decoration. Now the text of those prayers will be handy. While making this prayer journal wasn't quite as much fun as the first one, it still turned out well, and I think that my students this fall will love them!
Hey, y'all! I'm so excited to be sharing another Bible journaling freebie with you! Every other month or so I love to collaborate with another blogger to bring you a set of awesome free tools to study God's Word through creativity. This month I have teamed up with Hillary from Creative Faith & Company. She is sharing a devotion she has written for y'all on her blog, and I'm sharing printable journaling goodies over here. Hillary actually reached out to me about collaborating, and a subject she mentioned that she had on her heart was waiting. Y'all, I feel like I've done nothing but WAIT over the past few years, so I thought that was a perfect subject for the devotion. Let me explain... A little over nine years ago, my husband and I decided to grow our family. We realized a couple of years into the "trying to grow our family" process that something wasn't right. I'll gloss over all the details (if you want to read more detail, check out this post), but let's just say one endometriosis diagnosis, two surgeries, three failed IVF cycles and one more surgery later, we were no closer to having a child. We were both emotionally drained from the whole process and decided to just let everything be. Until the end of this past November when we both decided it was time for us to pursue adoption! So after all that waiting, we are now waiting again. But this time I finally see light at the end of the tunnel. And you know what? I realize looking back that God had a purpose for all of our waiting. He was preparing us for this next step in our lives where we will adopt the child He has had planned for us all along. Hillary's devotion contains some great verses on waiting and hard times, and it may be just what you need to read at this time in your life. You can download her "Two Days" devotion here. When Hillary sent me the "Two Day's" devotion, I used her writing as inspiration for some fun journaling printables for y'all so that you can get creative in your Bibles while studying what God has to say about waiting. Download the "Two Days" Bible journaling printable here. This time along with the tiny words, tabs, circles, banners, and journaling cards, I included a clock traceable. Sure, you can color it and use it in your Bible, but you can also trace it onto one of your Bible pages and use your favorite medium to add color to it! I hope that God uses Hillary's devotion and my freebies to speak to your heart. If you are inspired by the devotion to get creative in your journal or Bible, please share your pages with us on social media using the hashtag #TwoDaysDevo. I can't wait to see what you create! I'm a firm believer in the power of prayer. One of my favorite verses on prayer is Jame 5:16 and I love it in The Message translation: Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. I had a sweet reader ask recently if I'd make a prayer request printable to match the scripture writing plans and I was happy to do so! I couldn't decide on just one format so I came up with four to share with her...and you!
