Hi! I’m here today to share with you a meaningful art project for your younger students. This would be good as as a “getting to know you” activity. The following examples were all made by kindergartners near the end of the year, but I would think this lesson would be suitable for kids through grades 2. Many art teachers have taught about the artist Faith Ringgold and had their students create paper quilts. I have a free printable for you … Read more... →

Liturgical celebrations ground me as my faith deepens. Liturgical living is an invitation into not only reverence but also playfulness.
I have always been addicted to making lists, jotting down quotes, and sketching doodles. I collect little notebooks and journals and fill them up with my goals and things I must do…..all handwritten with something like colorful gel pens, of course. Beyond the grocery and bucket lists however, came a unique way for me to become closer to God. One day I bought the prettiest notebook, hundreds of stickers, and a set of fine tipped Sharpie markers. I began to write in this notebook……favorite bible verses, thoughts on God, prayers, and simply what was on my heart……and then I began to decorate it with colorful stickers and Sharpie doodles. I call it my Faith Notebook. I love it. As I thumb through the pages I realize it has changed my life. It makes me laugh and uplifts my spirit. I can vividly see prayers that have been answered and how my faith has grown. Best of all, my girlies look through it and want to make one of their own. I am hoping if I show you how, you will want to make one too. What you need: · A notebook or journal · Colorful things to write with · Stickers Okay, really all you need is a notebook. But gel pens and stickers will make you happy! I bought a fancy spiral hardback notebook, splurged on the package of 80 fine tipped markers, and loaded up on hundreds of stickers. Shhhhh. Don’t tell my husband. Getting Started: You can write about anything you want in your Faith Notebook, but mine mainly consists of my favorite Bible verses. Often times, I would write notes to myself about the verses or write down why they meant something to me, during a bible study. The point is, to collect your thoughts so you can go back and remember what you have learned. Making It Personal: It would take eons to fill in a large notebook with just bible verses and although they are the main portion of a Faith Notebook, I just love how I made my notebook mine. Here are some ideas that I used that will make your notebook uniquely yours. *Be Creative* Draw something. Color it. Use these illustrations to draw analogies about the Bible verses you have written down, or to explain what you are studying. *Ask Yourself Questions* As you look back on your notebook you will be able to re-ask yourself the questions that you wrote down, and if you are anything like me, they will be questions that you need to ask yourself over and over. *Give Thanks* Thank you Oprah, this is just like a gratitude journal. Your journal can be a great reminder of what you have to be thankful for, no matter what situation you are facing. *Pray* 1 Thessalonians 5:17 reminds us to “Pray without ceasing.” Praying is an open line of communication between you and God. When you write your prayers down, you will actually be able to see that they have been answered when you look back on them. It is AMAZING! *Talk To Yourself* In my notebook I am always bossing myself around. I use my name. Like, “Hey Lynnie! Listen to this!” or “Lynn, you gotta remember that….”. It’s like giving yourself a little pep talk during the messy game of life. *Use Song Lyrics* The words from a favorite praise song or hymn are a great way to add to your journal. I sometimes get a little crazy and take lyrics from any old love song and give those words a “God” theme. I think any song will work as long as you focus on Him. *Repeat Yourself* Many times I have written a Bible verse or special quote more than once in my journal. Sometimes what I have written is applied differently to whatever situation I am struggling with at the time, compared to when I wrote it down the first time. Sometimes it is simply a part of God’s word that I hold fast to over and over. Either way, don’t God’s words and promises bear repeating again and again? *Be Funny* When I watch my girls reading through my journal I love to see them laughing about my silly drawings and analogies. Being happy in your faith is a life altering experience. Nothing will make you happier in life than an ongoing relationship with God. Write about it and laugh! So there it is, my Faith Notebook. I have been working on it for over two years! I am about half way through it now and it is one of my goals to finish this year. (Goal #65 of 101 Goals in 2012) It is something I plan on continuing for the rest of my life and hopefully it will inspire someone to start one too. Get ready…..your faith is about to grow! This was a collaborative project I did with one of the Science teachers at my school. He was teaching his kids about food chains and wanted an art project to go along with it. He found THIS image via Pinterest as initial inspiration for the project. UPDATE: The poster was designed by art director and illustrator Dhanashri Ubhayakar for the magazine Sanctuary Asia, an Indian nature and wildlife conservation magazine. I turned the digital image into a collage project using construction paper. I used 12 x 18" construction paper. Have a background colour (in my case, turquoise). Then start with your largest animal (the top predator, I guess... the Science teacher explained this part to the kids, heh, heh) I folded my paper vertically so I only had to draw half the polar bear and it also made it symmetrical. I collaged on the eyes, nose and teeth from scraps of paper. Then make all the other animals slightly smaller... My messy workspace below.... Ok- once you have all the animals (our students were required to have 3 animals plus a plant) it's time to layer them and glue it all together. This took some fiddling and such, but I found it easiest to lay it all out and then start from gluing the smallest middle part first (the plant- I lost my mini tree) and work your way up. I used dots of white glue. It went faster than using a glue stick. Grade 7 student results!

You can print out my copy of the notes by clicking here: Or you can print the blank notes to have the kids fill in by clicking here: You might also like our Sacrament Symbols notes or some of the other activities under the Sacraments tab above.

Cultivating a Faith that Grows! Ollie MacDonald has a farm. . . that he just bought. Kids will join Ollie and his wife, Sarah, as they learn the ins and outs of farm life. Along the way, they will learn the ins and outs of living in faith and seeing the faithfulness of God. Click here to sample the first lesson for FREE. _______ Faith On The Farm Lessons Overview MEMORY VERSE: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20b (NIRV) Lessons: Ollie MacDonald Scripture: Genesis 15:1-6, God's Covenant with Abram There is a lot for Ollie MacDonald to learn in order to have a fully functioning farm. Some days Ollie's not sure he'll ever be a real farmer. When God told Abram that he would have a son in his old age, Abram had the faith to believe God. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful believe what God says. The Farmer's Wife Scripture: Genesis 18:1-15, The Three Visitors The day Ollie couldn't figure out how to turn on his own tractor, his wife Sarah couldn't help but laugh. When Abraham's wife Sarah heard that she would have a son in her old age, her doubt caused her to laugh. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful never need to doubt God. Chicken Coop Scripture: Luke 13:23-35, The Narrow Door The other day Ollie fixed the only door into the coop; now his chickens can once again go into the coop to get warm and stay safe. Our only way to God is through the narrow door – Jesus. Those who enter find love, peace and safety. Objective: Kids will learn the Faithful know that Jesus is the only way. Farm Equipment Scripture: Matthew 11:27-30, My Yoke is Easy Ollie spends his days learning how to use the tractor, the thresher, and all the other pieces of equipment on the farm. It's hard work, but not nearly as hard as the old days when farmers had to tie animals to a yoke to plow the fields. Jesus said that those who tie themselves to Him will find that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Objective: Kids will learn – Christmas reminds us that God gives us a family to love and to love us. Wheat Fields Scripture: Matthew 9:35-38, The Harvest is Plentiful The main crop on the farm is wheat, the most widely eaten grain in all the world. Ollie is still learning the best way to plant, grow and harvest this grain which is in such high demand. Jesus told his disciples that the fields were ripe for harvest, meaning that many people were ready to hear the good news and become His disciples. Someone just had to go out and tell them about Jesus. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful share their faith with others. Sheep Flock Scripture: John 10:11-18, The Good Shepherd Sarah loves their small flock of sheep that they raise for the wool. Every day she goes out and talks to the sheep – they have learned to recognize her voice and even come to the fence when they hear it. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects the sheep at all costs. Objective: Kids will learn the Faithful know that Jesus laid down His life for them. Sam, the Sheep Dog Scripture: Luke 15:1-7, The Parable of the Lost Sheep Sometimes the sheep get out of the pen and wander off. That's why the MacDonalds are so thankful for their trusty sheep dog, Sam, who helps lead them back to the pen. When we wander away like sheep, Jesus seeks us out and brings us back home. Objective: Kids will learn that even when the Faithful go astray, Jesus never gives up on them. Mustard Seed Crop Scripture: Matthew 17:14-20, Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy While the MacDonalds' main crop is wheat, they have a small bit of land where they harvest mustard seeds. Jesus told his disciples that even with a small bit of faith – as small as a mustard seed – they could do great things for God. Objective: Kids will learn that even with just a little faith, the Faithful can do great things for God. _______ Each Lesson Includes: Make It Stick! They'll have a blast and think you're the coolest.
