Fairy Tale STEM Activity - Goldilocks and the Three Bears Try a hands-on STEM challenge with Goldilocks and the Three Bears! This STEM activity is designed for lower elementary kids. I am so excited to share some details about it! STEM tales introduce the youngest budding engineers to STEM, by taking a familiar story and using it to walk through the engineering design process. Do you love telling and re-telling stories with your kids? Do you ever change the ending to spice it up a bit? That's exactly what STEM tales is all about! Integrate Literacy and STEM with Fairy Tales The 8-page book provides an alternative ending to this story. Your students need to help make a bed for Goldilocks. Goldilocks is simply a printed out figure, which you can add weigh to with either small masses, pennies, or washers. Using whatever crafting materials you have handy (index cards and tape are really all that is needed, but feel free to use other supplies as well), create a new bed for Goldilocks. The Testing Phase of the STEM Challenge Is the bed large enough? Will it hold the weight of the figure? You will be surprised at the designs your students come up with! Designing and creating a bed for Goldilocks is a way for students to bring the fairy tale alive. After you have tested out the beds, it's time to introduce the bear family to the challenge (mama, papa, and baby, who is the same size as Goldilocks). You will add heavier weights to mama and papa bear, and then test the designs again. This is a great way to demonstrate why it's important to know your design criteria before starting a STEM challenge! Mama bear may fit on some and not others, or papa bear may fit but weigh too much and collapse the bed. Get the Goldilocks Fairy Tale STEM Challenge Here is the link to the full resource. In addition to all the steps above, the 8-page story book guides students through the engineering design process and also includes a self-evaluation check list. Fairy Tale STEM Activity for Rapunzel Rapunzel can escape the tower with a little help from your students! Materials Needed for this STEM Fairy Tale Activity cardboard tubes printable character various recyclable materials other crafting supplies (craft sticks, pipe cleaners, pompoms, etc.) Before Getting Started with the STEM Tale First your students will craft a tower. This is a fun standalone activity. You don't even have to let your kids know there will be another part to the challenge after this. Use long cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls (or tape TP rolls together). Cut out a window near the top. Decorate as desired. Washi tape is always fun for this activity! STEM tales work best if you read the original fairy tale first (or do your own storytelling!). This also leads to great discussions during the engineering process, as kids love to compare the original story with the new version. Fairy Tale STEM with the Engineering Design Process I have designed STEM tales so that as students read the story, they will follow the engineering design process. First, they need to identify the problem (Rapunzel needs to escape from the tower). Then they need to think of some ways she could get down. Allow their imaginations to soar! I have had kids think of everything from a water slide to a parachute to a zip line and even a hang glider. Design an Escape for Rapunzel After thinking of some ways Rapunzel can escape, the kids will then choose one they can build. They will plan out the materials and design, and then construct their escape route based on the plan. After the prototype is built, the kids then test it out! If something didn't work right, it's time to go back and improve the design. STEM tales are a great way to foster teamwork and problem-solving. This STEM tale usually inspires amazing creativity and excitement from the littlest engineers. Hi everyone! Last week we were practicing comparing & contrasting using different versions of The Three Little Pigs. You can read about the books & activities that we used {here}. To wrap up the week, we had a STEM challenge related to the three little pigs! There are so many STEM ideas for The Three Little Pigs online so I adapted a few to make them work for my students. I have uploaded a quick freebie that includes a pig & wolf template that you can use! I provided my students with toothpicks and dots candy. I required them to use at least 10 of each but I had more on hand if they needed more...and most of them did! My students worked in groups of 2 or 3 (they got to choose who to work with). I wanted them to communicate and collaborate but didn't want the groups to be so big that it created conflict. They *loved* this activity! They were so excited and jumped right into it trying to figure out how to make a house around the pig. The only modeling that I did was to show them how they could stick the toothpick in the dot to make it stick, but other than that they were on their own. It was so interesting to hear their logic and thought processes and I will admit...I was impressed! This is definitely something that I will do again in the future. Here are some pictures of the students in action...I covered them for privacy, but I wanted to make sure you could still see those smiles! :) Let me know in the comments if you have any similar activities that I could try with my students!

Fairy Tale STEM Activity for Little Red Riding Hood Little Red Riding Hood is on her way to visit her sick grandmother, but the wolf beats her to Grandmother's house. Can you help stop the wolf before he eats Grandmother? This is a great STEM activity to try for National Fairy Tale day! Materials Needed for this STEM Fairy Tale Activity Supplies to create two different musical instruments (metal like washers and bolts, etc., rubber bands, recyclables cups and containers, balloons or plastic bags to create drums, craft sticks and rubber bands to create kazoos, etc. Before Getting Started with the STEM Tale STEM tales work best if you read the original fairy tale first or do your own storytelling. Discuss the similarities and differences as you read through the story. For this STEM tale, you will start with an exploration of Morse code! After getting acquainted with Morse code, students will then create two instruments that make distinctly different sounds, to represent the short and long parts of the code. Fairy Tale STEM with the Engineering Design Process I have designed STEM tales so that as students read the story, they will follow the engineering design process. What is the problem that needs to be solved in the Little Red Riding Hood STEM Tale? Grandmother can't call for help because she lost her voice with her illness. She did, however, learn Morse code with Little Red Riding Hood so the instruments will help save Grandmother! Design a Musical Instrument or Sound Device After brainstorming instrument design ideas, the students will then choose two to create. They will need to test out their instruments with a partner and decode the message! This can also be done digitally if desired: You can have students create a Scratch program to send the message. Otherwise, stick with simple instruments like the ones shown below: STEM tales are a great way to foster teamwork and problem-solving.
