THIS A KNITTING PATTERN ONLY This knitting pattern is of a Fair Isle Hat, which is in the design of Fir Trees and is a perfect accompaniment to the cowl in the same design. It is knitted in 4-ply on a circular needle and then you need to move onto Double Pointed Needles as the stitches decrease. As you can see by the main photo, I have knitted the cowl in 3 different colourways. The coloured rib starts the pattern, which then takes you to the main body of the pattern and then finishes with decreasing to shape the crown. (This is done by k2tog) There are 2 clear, colourful charts to show the Fair Isle pattern. There is also a matching cowl available: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/732536988/4-ply-fir-tree-cowl-in-fair-isle Measurements: Finished size: When laid flat, 20 - 21 cm (8"- 8.5") in height and 25.5 cm (10") across the rib. Circumference - fits head size of 52 cm (20.5") to 58 cm (23"). You can increase the rib by adding to the rib; there will be enough yarn left over to do this. Tension: Stocking Stitch: 28 sts x 36 rows – 10cm x 10cm/ 4”x 4 (Fair Isle can vary in tension, so please do a tension square, yes we all hate doing them 😊) Materials: The hat is knitted in the round with a 60cm 3.25mm circular needle and then 5 x 3.25 mm DPNs. Suggestions of yarn: Left Hat: Scheepjes Metropolis Lyon & Scheepjes Downtown Leafy Suburb (50g 200m/219 yds) Middle Hat: Drops Fabel Light Pearl Grey & Drops Fabel Emerald City (50g 205 m/224 yds) Right Hat: Scheepjes Metropolis Lyon & Scheepjes Downtown Park View (50g 200m/219 yds) Any leftover yarn would be ideal for putting towards a sock project :) You will need a stitch marker and a sewing-up needle to sew in the few ends. The pattern can be altered to add height, just by adding extra rounds to the rib if needed. I provide a quick tutorial on how to do the coloured rib on my blog chasobendesigns.com If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me. As this is a digital download, you can download your pattern via your Etsy downloads page or from a link in the download notification email, which you will receive after you complete your order and payment. Quantity selection is made in cart This kit contains the pattern and chart as well as DK or worsted yarn. The pattern is my design. It uses size 6 and 7 needles and is knit in the round. The pattern is the same for both DK and worsted. The worsted yarn will make a thicker knit hat than the DK. For 3 color kits: Yarn skeins are 75 yd each color The yarn is hand dyed using acid dyes For 2 color kits: 150 yd of background color and 75 yd of alpaca color The yarn is undyed. The color is the color of the alpaca This yarn makes a hat with 18”-22” circumference. All of our mill spin yarn has been ‘dehaired’. Dehairing alpaca yarn involves removing coarse guard hairs from the fiber, resulting in enhanced overall softness making it more comfortable against the skin.

Fair Isle patterns have intimidated me forever, with their complex color palettes, and the idea of knitting one scared me silly. How do you know what colors to choose? What if you pick a wrong one? What about contrast, and warm colors and cool colors? What about rhythm and repetition of colors? There just seemed to be so much to keep track of. If there's one thing I've learned from knitting, it's that the best way to learn, is by doing. So I designed a hat that allowed me to play with colors, and try out different combinations, to see what works. I've learned that it makes a lot of sense, to lay the tails of the yarns together, and see for yourself whether or not you like a particular triad of colors, *before* you start knitting a new color band. And if you don't like it, taking out a few rows in a hat, is much less traumatic than ripping out rows in a sweater. The pattern is simple - each row is either all one color, or K3 of one color, and K1 of another. So you can focus on your colors, rather than reading the chart. Knit in the round, on circular needles, you can use scraps, or buy yarns especially for this project. Many yarn dyers sell small skeins of yarn, called mini-skeins, which are perfect for projects like this. And many mini-skeins are sold in coordinating sets, so someone else has chosen colors that they think will coordinate nicely, and saved you the work. With each hat I knit, I feel more confident. I doubt I'll be knitting a fair isle sweater in the next couple of weeks, but the idea doesn't scare me like it used to. I knit the sample hats from Berroco's Ultra Alpaca yarn, simply because I had a lot of odds and ends laying around, but you can use any yarn that calls for a size 8 knitting needle. The hats are adult size: Med/Large, although that may vary depending on your tension. After knitting a few of these hats, I was ready to take on something a little more challenging. So I wrote another Foray into Fair Isle hat pattern, with a wider and more complex chart, and using gradient colors to pull the pattern together. I've knit half a dozen of them, and have another on my needles. If you're ready for something a little more challenging, maybe you'd like to take a look: https://www.etsy.com/listing/881349228/a-foray-into-fair-isle-ii-this-time-its
