Two quick and easy shortcut recipes for delicious and flaky scallion pancakes.
I haven’t been posting as much due to work and prepping for exam cramming, but follow me on Twitter for some fitting room photos and more. I’ve fallen very behind on emails and comments but will try to respond to any questions soon. Thank you for your patience! On to today’s post ~ I used to sew and gave up due to lack of patience and skill, but felt inspired to dust off my sewing machine again. Here’s a little something that I worked on recently: Which sleeve looks more flattering? H&M; Blazer. Left sleeve (on me) slimmed & shortened, right sleeve unaltered. When I initially tried on this blazer, I almost left it behind. I loved the light gray material and slim torso, but did not love the lack of lapels, the much shorter back, and the unsightly wide and bunchy sleeves. My other gray cascade jacket had the same sleeve issue, but it was unexpectedly sold before I even considered alterations. My current tailor charges $25 for shortening sleeves, and $20 for slimming (hopefully less for both done together). I’ve done simpler alterations in the past such as slimming shirts and taking in the waist on a skirt.…

Cabochon print blouse and pink pencil skirt, both from Savers Thrift Store Thrifted blouse & skirt, DIY altered, BR swing jacket, Christian Louboutin pumps I headed to the thrift store for inspiration recently – my visits there are hit or miss, but this time I skipped out with two pieces to experiment with. This blouse caught my attention right away, despite the dowdy silhouette and oversized fit. I like the vintage flair given off by the pink cabochon stones with antique gold backing, and the fabric-covered buttons. It can be pajama-like when worn alone, but adds interest when peeking out from underneath layers. This skirt, labeled a size 5-6, was roomy in the hips but a perfect fit at the waistband (calling for easy alterations). Below are the alterations I performed on both… I highly recommend washing and drying pre-owned items before starting any alterations. This is not only for sanitation purposes, but also prevents shrink-prone items from becoming too small after alterations. Steps 1 through 3: The first issue I addressed on this blouse were the too-wide shoulders. In the past, I meticulously detached shoulders and re-cut the armhole openings. This was very hard to do and took me…

Hot plate of fresh zong zi, DIY apron made over a decade ago for Mom When I was a teen, my mom often lamented that her Cantonese cooking legacy was coming to an end with my generation. I did plenty of eating but regrettably no cooking! Each time we visit home now, I make sure to request my favorites and take plenty of notes. I love experiencing different cultures through food, and would love to be able to cook my childhood favorites for my own kids. Per some of your requests, today I am sharing recipes for two dishes that always hit the spot, and can be easily modified to suit varying tastes. Zong zi (joong): Pictured above – sticky rice mixed with goodies, wrapped in bamboo leaves. The zong are boiled gently for 3+ hours, resulting in a heavenly melding of flavors inside. The first bite of one hot out of the pot with a touch of soy sauce = blissful. My mom often reminisces about buying these as a kid for breakfast, using saved pennies at street-side vendors. I can’t eat these store-bought (usually skimpy on fillings and not cooked long enough) anymore after having ones home made…
Reader Request: “I’m a 23 year old 5ft 90lb Asian girl who often gets mistaken for a 15 year old (or an 18 year old on a good day). Can you offer any fashion advice on how to look more your age? Specifically when it comes to casual clothes. I’m in grad school in the sciences and don’t have the benefit of wearing nice professional clothes.” Being the approximate age and size of this reader, I set out to illustrate her situation. I put on my “grad student of the sciences” ensemble: sweatshirt, jeans, sneaks, and a curious face. I avoided makeup and pulled my hair back into a simple ponytail. I pictured my parents nodding vigorously in approval (their mantra is: a minute wasted on makeup, hair, or fashion is a minute that could’ve been better spent on studying). End result – below left. Before (left): Ready to get carded for a PG-13 movie. After (right): A few changes make a big difference in age. Left: Gap hoodie PXS, A&F; kids tee sz M, True Religion “Joey” kids sz 12, New Balance sneaks kids sz 4 Right: Banana Republic top PXXS, J.Crew cardigan XS, True Religion “Stella” kids sz…
A video tutorial for my quick everyday neutral makeup routine and what I use to achieve the look!
I have been reading one of the books I recently checked out at the library. The Art of Tasha Tudor. ART..........The quality, production, expression,or realm, according to aesthetic principles,of what is beautiful, appealing,or of more than ordinary significance. I didn't become very aware of who Tasha was until just a few years before her death so I didn't know a lot of her history. Some of the things I learned from this book were rather a surprise to me. She lived a beautiful life from the outside looking in,but when we tend to idealize people we don't imagine all their daily frustrations, trouble and life despairing moments. She had them, just like you and I. She also had some beliefs that are contrary to mine, but such are the ways of this life. With all that said...I still sense a very beautiful life in the way she chose to live. What a gift she had in being able to bring to life such wonder with paper, pencils and paint. The ability to plant things and make them grow...such a gift there as well. So her life was a art,the living, the dreaming. In reality and in fantasy. And even in death, she will continue to contribute to the world through all that she left behind. While her children are still in a squabble over her estate, etc. My prayer is that love will prevail in the matter and they will come back together as a family and share in the memory of what must have been a beautiful life together, growing up with Tasha Tudor as a mother. Even in the most simplest form of living there can still be much confusion, despair and anxiety...life just has a tendency to be that way. Its in the way we cope and manage that keeps us from going under. In my life I choose to live by biblical instruction and through guidance from God's Holy Spirit. And when I fail,he is always standing over me with his hand held down to help me back on my feet and on to the right path....once again. It is there on that path..that I find Peace! Credit for most of the pictures goes to Google images Tasha worked from her winter kitchen...... It seems we keep the same curtains in our kitchen...smile. Go here to visit The Tasha Tudor Museum. And below is a video which isn't in English, but still lovely to watch. Scroll down and pause the music on my blog first. Blessings
