Around here, we are getting ready for our annual art show, Night of the Arts! We've been passing out art, trying to finish art, choosing our art that will be hung for the show, AND starting new projects all at the same time! State testing has started as well! WHEW! I get tired just thinking about it!! haha Here's a small example of what 4th and 5th will be starting this week. We will be creating a giant mural to hang for NOTA, that is inspired by California's Elementary Visual Arts Educator of the Year! He has their beautiful example, full how to, and a lot of other amazing art on his website Shine Brite Zamorano Here's how we created ours Materials: Crayola Color Sticks Crayola construction paper crayons 6x6" Tru-Ray construction paper squares 6x6" Sax 90lb white paper Scraps I had lying in the free draw box! scissors glue sticks pencils First, I showed them Mr. Donald's example at his blog, Shine Brite Zamorano, and we discussed the quilt and tiles he had pictured. Then, we talked about the Principles of Design,( Unity, Pattern, Balance, Pattern) & the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Color) and how we can use those to make our art amazing! Then I demonstrated how to make their circle, cut it, and position it however they like. Fold your square in half, and then in half again. Look for the FOLDED edge Decorate with Construction paper crayons or Color Sticks After you finish decorating your circle, you cut it into fourths, position the fourths, and glue them onto your white piece of paper. You either love or hate Jean-Michel Basquiat (Haiti 1960-New York City 1988). Our featured artist grew up in Brooklyn and began his career as a street and graffiti artist in the streets of NY. He became good friends with Andy Warhol, who supported his artistic endeavors. His art makes political, personal and social statements, often using free association texts, drawings and statements. Basquiat died of a drug overdose when he was 27. Sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing, his art is every bit as fun as it is heavy. My 6-7 yrs olds beautifully channeled Basquiat in their self-portraits with free-association elements. Take a close look and get inside the complex minds of my littlest artists. Aditri 7 Rune 6 Elena 6 Mei Mei 7 Daniel 7 Yiming 6 We began by looking at and discussing several of Basquiat's paintings. The kids pointed out that there are faces, words, sentences, drawings, nonsense text and lots of colors. We then talked about creating our own self-portrait, and thought of some words or drawings that might accompany our portrait (these can be anything you freely associate with yourself). I decided to forgo the usual crisp white paper for this project and instead had the kids paint their portraits on painted paper. I cut brown packing paper, which had previously served as table protectors and were full of paint and scribbles from previous art classes, into 12x15 sizes. This added to that Basquiat look of a scribbly, random, messy background. The kids chose the paint paper they wanted. We 'drew' our face with a tiny brush and black acrylic paint. Then added some areas of blue, yellow and red to frame our face and add some bursts of color. Next, we got our our black permanent makers and fine liners, our white gel pen, and our acrylic paint pens and added our free-association elements. We were mindful of thinking of balance and harmony - placing our elements thoughtfully around the painting. Lastly, we 'traced' along the black edge of our portrait with a white gel pen to make our face pop out and give us the contrast and focus it needs to stand out against a busy background. These turned out so beautifully, and each is so unique to my students.

Hey everyone!!! I hope everyone is having a great start to the NEW YEAR! It's always great to have a fresh start and a clean slate. (Although, is it just me or does your new year always begin in August?) : ) One of the things that I have been working on during my winter break is our lesson plans in science. By the way, we have a brand new standard this year in science!! (AND new standards are always exciting!) Drum roll...our new standard is... LIGHTS AND SHADOWS!! I know...so fun...kind of...except...I have never taught light and shadows, EVER!!! (Confession is good for the soul.) I mean, I have always taught first grade standards, AND light and shadows have never been one of our standards until now. So I definitely had to share what I learned with my first grade friends!! YOU! I have a lot of ideas, freebies, and links that you might be able to use, too. This blog post is part one of two...so hang tight...shadows will be coming next week!! We are going to launch our unit with Oscar and the Moth by Geoff Waring. He has a great collection of easy to understand books on science. This particular book is about light and shadows. Oscar the cat and his new friend the moth set out on a little journey to learn about shadows and light. Isn't Oscar a cutie? Light is energy and it makes objects visible and without it, we cannot see anything! So we are going to first discuss the kinds of light that we find in our world and list them by two categories: natural light and artificial light! We are going to use an anchor chart just like The Lesson Plan Diva's chart. Perfect! (You can check out her anchor chart by clicking on the photo above.) We are also going to be looking at all the different types of lights in real life. Would you include matches or a lighter? I am still debating. Since we don't have a real darkroom we are going to be using the restroom in our classroom. Hysterical! Just the thought of being in the restroom is going to crack my little firsties up! I am going to take them into the darkroom in groups cause my darkroom is tiny! My students who are not in the darkroom group will be working on the activity sheet below. You can find it free here! In the darkroom, I am hanging pictures of objects around the room. I want my students to see them when we shine the flashlight around the darkroom to make them visible because of light. We will discuss how light makes it possible for them to see the objects. And when I turn the flashlight off, the objects are no longer visible. (Yes...I totally expect some shrieks!! Eesh...but in the name of science, right?) In their science journals, they are going to record what they observed by drawing or writing what was visible in the darkroom. They are not hard to make and you can easily make one for your students to see. Here is an example of one I made: Without light you can't see anything inside... But with light, you can see lots of things on the inside! I can't believe this box already had a peep hole!!!!! My students are going to record what they see inside the peep boxes in their science journals. You can find the scene that I used for my peep box here. It's so fun and exciting to look inside!!! Are you following us on Pinterest? Thanks to a recent heat wave in Melbourne, we've been having lots of fun playing with ice. The other day I thought I'd combine our love of painting by making some frozen paint cubes for the kids to paint with. I wasn't actually sure how well it'd all turn out, but the results speak for themselves. I've since tested it with a variety of different paints and found that whilst the results vary, they all provide a fun, sensory and unique painting experience. Ages: 2+ (See the end of the post for handy hints. This is a great multi-age activity) Materials: Paint (our favourite is this easy wash finger paint as it's nice and thick! Use any poster paints, tempera paint or acrylic paint you have) Ice cube tray. (these are super cheap so it's not a stretch to have one dedicated to crafts. However, using a non-toxic paint and then popping it through the dishwasher when you're done would make the tray fine to continue using for ice) Craft sticks/popsicle sticks cut in half Squeeze your paint into your ice cube tray. As the finger-paint we were using is nice and thick, it allowed me to make a multi-colour cube as well. (This isn't going to work well with thin paints that will run together when poured in the same cube.) Thanks to the thickness of the paint, the craft sticks sat up nice and straight in the centre of the cubes. As there was such a small amount of paint to be frozen, these only took a couple of hours to set completely. To be safe, I'd pop them in the freezer overnight so that your activity is ready to go the next day. They popped out of the ice-cube tray the same as you'd pop out an ice cube. It wasn't an effort to get them out cleanly. It was nice and easy. We used the ice cube tray to hold the paint cubes in. They slipped in and out with no problem. I presented them along with some painting paper (it's a little thicker than regular paper) to my 2 year old and 5 year old and left the rest up to them. The little sticks were perfect for little hands Maddie loved swirling them round and round and watching the colour come off as the cube slowly melted. The toddler quickly discovered what could happen as they melt and by using some force. It was a wonderfully sensory experience. Crushing the frozen paint and swirling it around the page was a lot of fun and it was great for cooling down as well! Worried that her little brother was on a "crushing mission," Maddie quickly collected some of the remaining whole paint-cubes on the side of her paper. And of course, the finger painting looked like so much fun that she had to have a turn of it herself. Some of the works of art by my little artists using frozen paint cubes The multi-coloured cube was my favourite. When we were doing the activity I shared this pic on my Instagram account. Thanks to @fifomama for suggesting they be called "Paintsicles" ;) Just in case our favourite thick finger-paint was the only one to produce these great results, I thought I'd better give it a bit of a test with some other varieties of paint I had so that you wouldn't be disappointed. Here I tested some easy wash, acrylic and poster paints of different varieties to see if it made much of a difference. The acrylic paint (good varieties) was pretty thick so I tested some on it's own and some mixed with water. None of these paints were thick enough to make the craft-sticks stand up in the centre. I wasn't fussed about it but if you want them standing up straight, you'll have to pop some tape across the top of the ice-cube trays to hold the sticks in place. You can see that the water based paints (like Tempera, poster paints, easy wash paints) leave a nice colour that is a bit thinner than the acrylic paint. You'll get a much thicker, smoother and creamier result with the bold pigments of acrylic but I would recommend watering it down first as it actually spread better (and went much further) than just straight acrylic paint. (The light blue in the centre top is straight acrylic and below it is the same paint watered down about half/half.. I think you could get away with 1 part acrylic and 3 parts water though.) I think that regardless of the type of paint, they still look great and are lots of fun! Handy Tips: - Simplify this activity by freezing your paint in plastic cups to provide larger "paintsicles". With more paint around the sticks, the one colour should last them a lot longer and will be harder to get off the stick. - Extend this activity by challenging children to make new colours from the paint cubes they have. This could be by layering the colours over one another or by crushing some of the icy-paint together. Test for different results. - If you are using a paint that does not wash off hands/clothes easily (such as acrylic paint) you will want to encourage use of the sticks. You get a great result with acrylic but for younger children, I'd definitely be recommending an easy wash paint (like our awesome Micador ones) so that you don't have to worry about it and so that the kids get an even greater sensory experience by being allowed to touch the icy paint. - Mix it up. Try placing some paintsicles on a piece of paper in the sun. What results will you get? You could also pop them into a box with some paper and tip the box slightly to get the frozen paint cubes to slip and slide around as they melt. (I did have thoughts about pushing them around paper with a hair-dryer but as we were trying to beat the heat, this didn't seem like the best idea for the time, haha) - Talk with your child about what they are doing. This will help them understand the physical and mental processes they are going through as well as giving them the vocabulary to describe it. Working side by side with children while they are being focused is also a good time to talk with them about sensitive issues and their feelings. - Use new language and descriptive words like, "frozen," "swirl," "melt," "spread," "slide" etc. This will help with their language development. - Supervise. Neither of my children tried to lick the paint cubes but there'd be some kids who would (especially if you're freezing them in actual popsicle moulds). Paintsicles are not food and are not intended to be eaten. We always use a non-toxic paint but still discourage any eating/tasting of it. Want more ideas for Painting with kids? I must say, it's hard to avoid the Yayoi Kusama dot pumpkin around the fall time. Searching for pumpkin-inspired art project ideas inevitably reveals this contemporary Japanese artist's dimensional, plump and somewhat psychodelic pumpkins. It's been done, again and again, but I felt it was now my turn... despite the hype. Kusama pumpkins White board instructions and guides, with teacher samples I love the graphic quality, and I particularly love the challenge of drawing contours without lines, by using only dots of various thickness. My kids classes (8-14 year olds) have varying degrees of experience with pen techniques since we did a few projects last year and in the last weeks involving stippling, hatching, and adding texture with pen. This no-lines drawing is not too far off, but definitely in a new direction, and I saw it as an extension of our previous illustration and pen work. Win win. Medium choice: I wanted the results to be super neat and crisp, like Kusama's own work. I knew painting dots with brushes would not give us that crisp quality, and I felt similarly about painting or drawing in the background pattern. So I opted for drawing in the dots with permanent black markers in various thickness, on colored paper. Pumpkins would be cut out and pasted on a background which was painted with a foam roller and stencil with black acrylic paint over top a vibrantly colored paper. With this approach we get the bright color of the pumpkins and the background, the neatly controlled lines of dots with the makers (that's the objective, after all), and the clean patterned background with the stencils. Process Day 1 1. Drawing pumpkins Student had visuals of Kusama's pumpkins as well as photos and illustrations of pumpkins to observe the variety of their form and shape. Simple step-by-step pumpkin drawing guides were also at their desk, so they could see how to break down and simply the drawing steps. I also demonstrated how to draw a pumpkin on the white board, and showed them several different options for shapes. Pumpkins are most easily drawn starting with the central 'section shape', them the section shape to the left and the right, and so on. The stem is drawn slightly tucked down into the top, so is doesn't look like it's sitting on the top contour edge, but rather growing out the pumpkin. Students were encourage to try a few different shapes - tilted, plump, oblong and even with wavy sections.... like Kusama's. We practiced a few rounds of pumpkins on scratch paper. Then we chose our colored paper, and began drawing our favorite version in pencil. 2. Dots Each pumpkin section must be filled with dots in a crisp, systematic fashion. Our dots must create the illusion of form. We analyzed Kusama's work and noted how she uses a row of larger dots at the center of her central section, with increasingly smaller rows of dots on both sides. This gives our section a 3-D shape. The tricky part is addressing the next sections to the left and the right. We noted that Kusama uses large semi-circle, or half-dots, along the outer edge of the first section (where we drew our section line with pencil). From there, the lines of dots get increasingly smaller again toward the other edge. This is repeated for each section. The darker intensity of the large half-dots serves the purpose of creating a strong visual line which separates the sections (thereby replacing our 'line' with 'dots'). *Super important for an effective gradient of dot sizes is using differently sized markers. We used permanent markers with hefty fat tips, medium tips (or a sharpie with a good point) and fine liners in various tops. 3. Stem We observed that Kusama did her stem in the same manner, but in the inverse. So dots are white, and the negative space is black. To achieve this effect, we simply drew open circles with our black pen, and colored the space around our white circles. Pencil lines were erased and pumpkins were cut out. We managed all this in a 90 minutes class. Drawing dots Drawing dots Day 1 results Day 1 results Day 2 Background: Student chose a colored paper that complemented or contrasted with their pumpkin color. Then they chose the stencil of their choice. My stencils are from Marabu. We chose stencils that contrast the dot pattern, so those with a different angular of liner quality. We did not, for examaple, use the stencils with hearts, small stars, circles, etc. because they are visually too similar to our dots. We used black acrylic paint and foam rollers to stencil on our colored paper. In many cases, our stencils were not as large as our paper, so we had to carefully reposition the stencil, lining up the stencil with the printed edge, and rolling again to fill the page. Pumpkins were finally pasted on the printed background, for a visually exciting result. My students were quite wowed by their vibrant, dimensional results, and proud of their hard work and dedication to neatness and precision. Hard work pays off. Ages 8-14 Ages 8-10

One of the perks of teaching a lesson the first time is that you can use student suggestions and input to make it way better than you intended. I luckily have a great batch of 5th graders that start my rotation out to give me really great input! I love Mondrian, no matter how boring some people might think his work is, I see such beauty and simplicity in the basic primaries. I just can't resist sharing Mondrian and his work with my students but I do like to mix it up ergo the cubes. I did the project below with my 2nd graders and Mondrian last year. Day 1: Intro to Mondrian. I give them a little background info about him and then we watch this seriously amazing animation of his work on YouTube. We look carefully at a few of his works and then I introduce the project by talking about cube vs. square. The rest of the class is spent creating their template for their cube by tracing pre-cut 4x4 squares onto a 1/2 sheet of poster board and following this guide I made them :) Day 2: Right away when they come in, I show them more SERIOUSLY awesome YouTube videos inspired by Mondrian. The music isn't great for this one so I usually mute it... They freak out over this one... So here is the part where they changed my mind: Originally on my example I only did traditional Mondrian (square/rectangles/black lines) and they were like "Lets do any geometric shapes or shapes with straight edges only." After pondering a moment I was like "THAT SOUNDS AWESOME" And tada! Here are a few mid-process ones... After 3-4 more work days these beautiful cubes were born and held together with tacky glue! Hints for the cube: I had pre-cut 6"x12" strips of each primary and 4"x12" black for them to use to limit paper waste. Put them together last, they don't take up too much space week to week if you wait until the end Score all of the edges and tabs with a ruler before working on the designs and re score right before putting it together... makes things A LOT easier. Hundertwasser Hundertwasser Austrian artist, architect, ecologists and environmental activist, Friedensreich Dunkelbunt Regentag Hundertwasser (1928-2000), believed the straight line represented everything that is wrong with humanity. What a truism! Our 6-13 year olds did an amazing job conveying this belief in their imaginative, nature-centric, rhythmic landscape with houses. The classic Hundertwasser onion-dome roofs, lollipop trees, eyes and raindrops featured heavily, as did his use of complementary and analogous colors. Coloring with markers is more exhausting and time-consuming than one thinks, and we ended up spending three 90 minute classes on this project, but we are well-rewarded with these beauties! Day 1: We looked at many of Hundertwasser's paintings and architecture and identified his use of line, shape and color, as well as the way he used repetition, rhythm, movement and overlapping. We practiced drawing in his iconic style with the help of a worksheet I had created for the kids. We practiced those raindrops, spiral lollypops, row house trees, and faces emerging from hills, as well as his use of line to create repetition and rhythm. No straight lines! We then began our own imaginative dreamscape using all of these elements and thinking about filling our pages and balancing our elements in our composition. We drew on marker paper in pencil and traced our lines in permanent black marker. Marker paper is rather thin and super smooth, allowing for a really even and easy application of color. Maker paper also absorbs less than does normal drawing paper, resulting in far more vibrant colors. A definite recommendation for any marker project! Practice sheets Beginning drawing our dreamscapes Day 1: Dreamscapes in permanent black marker Day 2: Adding color using the color wheel Day 2: We analyzed Hundertwasser's use of color. We noted that he often used complimentary (across from each other on the color wheel) and analogous colors ('neighbors' on the color wheel). We colored our landscapes using this same approach. It's a lengthy, mindful and detailed process. There were some complaints about hands hurting....but hey, all good things come at a price! Important for us was that all areas were colored in neatly and coherently, with no white paper peeking through. We were mindful of how we used our markers, preferring short, even strokes in order to create a uniform application of color without streakiness. Day 3: The coloring continued, and continued.... In this last step of coloring, we were careful to choose a few minor areas within our dreamscape which we would leave white. We chose these white areas carefully, as they result in emphasis, create contrast, while also allowing our eyes to 'rest' in an otherwise wild and colorful composition. Some of us chose to leave white window frames, doors, the whites of eyes and rain drops. I'm so proud of these, and the kids were too!
