Are you looking for a great back-to-school narrative writing baseline with engaging texts for your 6th grade students? Or maybe a pre/post assessment for a narrative writing unit? Look no further! This narrative assessment comes with a FREE passage! I have had years of experience working with standardized testing companies, and I have designed a narrative writing assessment just for you; plus, it's fully editable! Students will need to log in to Readworks in order to access the free passage. Please note, the Lexile of this passage is 1000L and there are 403 words. Included: link to one passage (1000L and 403 words) 1 extended narrative response 4-point scoring rubric links to other standardized testing writing rubrics There are a few options for administering: print the passage and prompt for your students to do by hand open the passage and copy and paste it into this document for the students to read and complete on the computer (they can type their response in the box) have them make sure they’re logged in to Readworks and simply click the hyperlink to access the articles This assessment is designed to be similar to narrative prompts on standardized tests. It is best for students to follow the prompt carefully and make sure to add details, description, and dialogue that fit with the text. This is great for a baseline writing at the beginning of the year, a pre/post assessment for beginning to end of the year, or a post assessment at the conclusion of a unit. Personally, I would not give an unlimited amount of time for students to complete this. Give them the same amount of time they would get on a standardized test. For example, on the Georgia Milestones, the narrative response is included in a section where there are other reading passages and selected response questions. Students shouldn’t spend more than 30 minutes writing their narrative response or they will not be able to get the rest of the passages read and questions answered. Grade these using the provided rubric if you wish. Keep in mind it is a sum total of how they are scoring. At what scoring point does the majority of their response fit? You can convert it to a grade using a sliding scale of whether or not it was a strong or weak score point. Consistency is key in helping students grow in writing. I strive for FIVES! This year, I really wanted my students to grasp the concept of what it would be like to blind. None of my students have ever been around anyone with that sort of disability before. Before we read our story I explained to them a little about what we were going to be reading about and I let them ask any questions they might have had. After all of our questions had been answered, everyone was "blindfolded" (I used sentence strips) and the lights were turned off. I laid a sheet of drawing paper and a pencil on everyones desk. They had to find their paper and pencil, then draw a picture of spring. I immediately heard things like "but we can't see anything". EXACTLY! That is my point little sweeties!
