I was playing a game the other day, in which you have to come up with fruit that start with every letter of the alphabet. Apple, banana, cherry and that is about where I hit a blank. My epic failure at this game made me do some research and what I discovered was a whole world of delicious looking fruit that I had never even known about! I was completely shocked to find that there are actually hundreds of different types of fruit (no need to include them all as omissions in the comments), most of which I had never even heard. This list is not to rank the fruit, but rather just to inform you about them. The only fruit on this list I consider ranked is No: 1, as it deserves the spot, in clearly being the coolest fruit on the planet. How many of these exotically delicious fruit have you tried?
Explore May 17, 2011 #194 It was an overcast day on Sunday and Albert and I were virtually the only ones at Fairchild Garden! What a treat! Our friend Don Winston guided us around to the most unusual plants in fruit and bloom! Like kids, we exclaimed over each one. And of course, I took pictures. This fruit was a treasure! Cobalt blue... a real jewel in in hand. Elaeocarpus angustifolius or grandis is a species of flowering plant in the Elaeocarpaceae family, bearing bitter edible fruit. It is commonly known as Blue Marble Tree, and also as Blue Fig or Blue Quandong, although it is not closely related to figs and apart from both being Eudicots hardly related at all to quandongs. The junior synonym Elaeocarpus grandis, from a later description of the species by Ferdinand von Mueller, is also frequently found. It is found in New-Caledonia, Queensland, Australia, and New South Wales. The fruit of this species is round and blue, between 20 and 30 mm across, and has a seed with deep convolutions in its shell. These are eaten whole by cassowaries, Woompoo pigeon and Spectacled flying foxes which pass the nut undamaged. Katuk is an edible leafy shrub that thrives in tropical or subtropical climates. It's botanically known as Sauropus androgynus. Nearly all parts of the plant can be eaten raw or cooked. The leaflets are easily stripped from the petioles and added to salads, sandwiches, soups or stir-fries. Tender young shoots are usually steamed, and the flowers and fruits can be added to salads or vegetable dishes. The leaves are very nutritious. Compared to spinach, katuk has 10x the protein, 20x the vitamin C, 6x the iron and 3x the calcium! The pinnate leaves can reach up to 2 feet in length, and the overall plant height can be 6-7 feet or more if not kept cut back. The tall, thin stems seldom branch and easily fall over in wind or heavy rain. It's best to keep them cut back to 3-4 feet in height to form a more sturdy bush. The trimmed parts can be eaten. Some cultivars show a silvery mottling on the leaflets that may be randomly scattered or in attractive patterns, depending on the individual plant. Katuk prefers a little shade in hot climates, but will grow in full sun as long as the soil is kept moist. An evenly moist soil is also conducive to faster, more lush, growth. The unusual flowers form on the underside of the leaves in the spring and fall. The fruits develop quickly after pollination. Some cultivars may require cross-pollination with another cultivar in order to set fruit. Others appear to be self-fertile. The fruits are creamy-white, marble-sized balls that hang from the leaf on a short stem. When fully mature, they split open to reveal up to 6 black angular seeds. For propagation, the seeds should be sown immediately, and usually take at least 2-3 months to germinate. Katuk is native to Borneo, and is recommended for USDA Zones 9b-11. Elsewhere, it can be container-grown and protected from the cold. Sauropus androgynus is also sometimes known as Sweetleaf or Cinnamon leaf.

Most of the vegetables we're familiar with are either annuals or biennials grown as annuals. The latter includes the likes of carrots, parsnips and cabbage, harvested before they get the opportunity to flower and set seed in their second year. Of course, there are also a few commonly grown perennial vegetables – those reliable stalwarts that continue from year-to-year. Asparagus and globe artichoke are a real delicacy, while some crops such as the knobbly-tubered Jerusalem artichoke can be left to re-sprout each spring from stray tubers left in situ to overwinter.
