Last weekend's teacher workshop at Palace Art was a huge success! It's encouraging to know that so many teachers are eager to expand their art skills so they can share the benefits of Art with their students! For this workshop we focused on watercolor, so I thought I would share a few of the amazing paintings these teachers-turned-students produced. (Scroll down for the lesson plan if you'd like to try this project yourself!) Fish Painting with Pointillism Materials: 9x12 white construction paper Black chisel tip marker Prang OVL-8 Watercolors & brush Q-tips (at least 7 per student) Containers for water Photos or line drawings of various types of fish for visual reference Examples of the paintings of artist Georges Seurat (You can find these in many art books as well as online.) Directions: 1. Explain what “Pointillism” is and talk about the work of Georges Seurat. Show examples of his paintings. Provide several visual references of interesting fish shapes for students to draw. 2. Lightly sketch the outline of a fish, filling most of your paper. Include shapes within the fish to paint with different colors. Add a few other elements to illustrate the fish’s habitat, such as kelp, rocks, shells, etc. Keep in mind that your shapes need to be large enough to be painted with a Q-tip! 3. Trace over your pencil lines with a black, chisel tip marker to create a bold “coloring book” style drawing. 4. Add a drop of water to each of the colors in your paint set to moisten them (you will not be using the black). 5. Dip each of your 7 Q-tips in water and lay them along the lid of your paint set, each one resting in it’s own color (see photo at left). 6. Now fill in each section of your drawing with dots of color by dipping your Q-tip in the paint and then pressing it onto your paper. Cover each area with a “light sprinkling” of dots at first. Then go back and fill in with more dots as needed. You can “mix” colors by combining dots of different colors within the same section. Try to let the first color dry before adding the next color, to keep your Q-tips clean! Encourage students to take their time and work carefully, placing one dot of color on their paper at a time. You don’t have to dip the Q-tip in the paint for every dot. Making several “dots per dip” will yield a lighter, more transparent color. This project usually takes one session for drawing and one session for painting, but my "teacher-students" got through it in half the time!

Si, lo so, ultimamente non riesco a tenere il ritmo coi tutorial, ma fortunatamente prossimamente qualcuno arriverà in mio soccorso! Oggi voglio parlarvi di ACQUA. Pensavo di dividere il tutorial in due parti: la prima, questa, su come realizzare l'acqua vista dall'esterno, per esempio rappresentare mari, laghi, onde, mentre la seconda analizzerà più che altro gli effetti ravvicinati e come la luce si rifrange sugli oggetti attraverso l'acqua. 1 2 Partiamo quindi con una color chart standard, azzurra, nel mio caso composta da B00, B02, BG05 e BG07. Ad un certo punto sono passata dal B al BG perchè mi piace avere una nota verdeacqua o violacea quando faccio l'acqua. Il concetto si basa su due livelli di lavoro, un pò come er il tutorial della texture del legno: prima una base, nel caso dell'acqua, sfumata da un tono chiaro ad uno più scuro per dare profondità, e successivamente i volumi dati dalle increspature delle onde sull'acqua. Come vedete, la colonna di sinistra indica la sfumatura della base e quella di destra la texture delle onde. Passiamo quindi ad applicare le fasi. Per prima, la base a B00. è sempre consigliabile stendere il colore con pennellate orizzontali, così, se la sfumatura non dovesse venire uniforme e mostrare delle righe, verrebbero facilmente coperte dalle successive onde, mascherandone le imperfezioni. Continuiamo con tutti i passaggi con i colori in sequenza, fino ad aver completato la sfumatura. Ora è il momento di passare alle onde, assicurandosi di aver lasciato asciugare bene la base. L'ordine del passaggio dei colori, se da chiaro a scuro o da scuro a chiaro, è indifferente, ma se non vi sentite sicuri, partire da quelli chiari è meglio, si può sempre scurire dopo. E infatti riparto dal B02. Non posso fare onde con B00, perchè passato sulla sua stessa base non si vedrebbe nulla. Ecco quindi perchè tutti i colori sono scalati di un gradino: il B02 deve fare le onde sulla base B00, il BG05 deve fare le onde sulla base B02, e così via. Per fare le onde utilizzo la pennellata appuntita da entrambe le estremità. Non deve essere precisa, se la parte centrale risulta anzi un pò spigolosa è persino meglio! ecco un piccolo video dei passaggi, si vedono chiaramente le fasce di colore. Così chiaramente che in alcuni piccoli punti ho dovuto passare qualche trattino di colore più scuro dentro le onde del colore precedente, per rendere meno netto lo stacco. Per non lasciare troppo vuota la parte rimasta chiara, dove si vede solo un pò di B00, ho usato l'opaque white extra fine per creare dei riflessi di luce sulla superficie. E qui sotto, ecco un altro modo di visualizzare gli strati di colore. se non volete fare prima le basi e poi le onde, potete mescolare insieme i due passaggi, lavorando come se fossero livelli di Photoshop, per chi magari se ne intende un pò. Basta colorare piatto fino ad un certo punto, poi, prima di interrompere bruscamente, 'sfumare' con qualche onda grande che diventa via via più piccina. Questo si ripete ad ogni livello, ad ogni, cambio di colore, diminuendo la superficie piena man mano che si procede verso gli scuri. Come vedete, ilivello B00 occupa 4 tacche piene, il livello B02 tre tacche piene e una di onde, il livello BG05 Due tacche piene e una di onde, e il livello BG07 una tacca piena e una di onde. Bene, questa è la base. Ora bisogna applicare questa modalità ad un disegno vero e proprio, e qui entra in gioco la prospettiva. In una striscia di mare, le onde saranno più grandi e visibili nelle fasce più basse, divenendo più piccole man mano che ci si allontana e salgono verso l'orizzonte. Proviamo ora qualcosa di un pochino più complesso.... Le onde. In questo caso specifico, un'onda di quelle grandi, da surfisti: se riuscite a fare questa, non avrete difficoltà anche con quelle più piccole. Partendo dal mare piatto, le linee con cui tracciamo le ondine sono tutte orizzontali. Più ci avviciniamo al punto in cui desideriamo posizionare l'ombra grande, invece, più dobbiamo 'muovere' queste linee, disegnarle arrotondate in basso con quella tipica puntina all'insù. a sinistra, il mare piatto di base e l'indicazione della direzione dell'onda. a destra, il mare mosso con il risultato finale L'onda va pensata come un cono, o un tubo, cavi all'interno. Come questi due oggetti, ci sono delle sone d'ombre da rispettare: per esempio, venendo la luce da sopra, la parte appena sotto lo strato superiore sarà in ombra. La cosa più importante è stendere il colore facendo seguire alle pennellate la direzione dell'acqua, in questo caso circolare. è FONDAMENTALE perchè è ciò che darà movimento a tutto. con il bianco fine e la penna bianca acrilica Molotow ho passato inile degli effetti non solo luminosi, ma anche che simulino la schiuma, che si forma quando l'acqua viene mossa velocemente. Anche in cima alla punta delle ondine.uso due strumenti diversi perchè il pennellino fine mi permette di fare linee sottili e ben definite, mentre la penna è utile per fare dei puntini ben netti. This dry erase and water trick will amaze kids and adults alike! You can make your drawings float with just dry erase markers and water!

John and I had a fun day in the studio recently. We both wanted to do a bit of experimental mark-making, to explore new ideas. John is looking for inspiration for his printmaking and I thought it would be interesting to play with marks and compositions which could be the starting points of new drawings or which might possible translate into textiles. We gathered lots of tools and then made a few new ones, looking for anything which would make an unusual mark if dipped in paint: We decided to stick to black and white, so we could concentrate on marks and tone. I mixed up a tub of black acrylic and got out some Platignum Calligraphers Black Ink too (a good non-waterproof ink, as it separates into pretty colours when wet, rather than just going grey). I found an oil bar and some liquin too, which is great for smearing not just oil bars but also oil pastels. Plus a Derwent Inktense block and grater (tiny gratings can be scattered onto wet paper or sprayed with water for speckled effects). We both put on latex gloves and set-to on a big piece of cartridge paper each. It was such fun - no pressure to make something which 'works', just pure experimentation. This was my first sheet: I am particularly interested in randomness, so many of the new tools we made were designed to make the marks more hard to control. To add to the random element, we both cut up our sheets into equal pieces, using pre-decided measurements, not aesthetic judgement to create the sections: I like the way it changes things when you isolate a section. The emphasis on the various elements changes, because of the enforced edges, and you start to get interesting things happening with composition. On my 2nd sheet, I started with some large marks in a grey emulsion, to create a new element of contrast. I made a new tool too - a piece of corrugated card to print with. You can see the marks top right: I cut this one into squares. As the paper's dimensions didn't divide exactly into squares, this allowed me a slight element of judgement, as I could move the composition of any square a centimetre or two to the left or right. I then selected the best 6 squares from the 9 created. These are my favourites. It's surprising how well they work just as they are, but you can also see how they could be taken into print or textiles. It would be fun trying to find ways to reinterpret the marks and tones in the different medium. I can highly recommend this as a very enjoyable way of exploring new techniques and getting new inspiration. The randomness is important though, as a way of forcing you not to be too controlling and letting unexpected things happen. John did some experiments using blotting paper, which he tore into strips. Even the offcuts were interesting, which I saved as we were clearing up. The beautiful blue is the Platignum ink: Even my offcuts were quite interesting: Have a go. Even before we got drawing, it was good fun making the tools from odds and ends we found around the studio, taping them to bits of stick and then finding out what marks they made.
