These AAC parent handouts explain how to model without expectation, and why this strategy is effective in speech therapy early intervention. This easy-to-follow guide helps parents implement speech therapy early intervention strategies at home. What’s inside? Written in parent-friendly language, these AAC parent handouts include 4 pages outlining how to model without expectation. Page 1: Explanations of what it means to model without expectation, and the reason behind using this strategy in speech therapy early intervention and AAC. Explanations highlight the ultimate goal of independent and spontaneous communication rather than prompt dependent communication. Page 2-4: Three different example scenarios in which modeling without expectation could be used, and examples of helpful vs. unhelpful models and responses. Example Scenario #1 - communicative intent = requesting Example Scenario #2 - communicative intent = making a choice Example Scenario #3 - communicative intent = directing an action Why I created these AAC Parent Handouts - Do you have parents or teachers on your caseload who are constantly prompting your student to “say this….”, “repeat after me”, “tell me what you want”, “say I want more”, “use your words”, “say help please”? Although I know the intentions are usually good, it drives me pretty nuts! It can take some time for parents, teachers, and even speech therapy early interventionists to get comfortable with the idea of moving forward without the child having performed a task. Educating parents and teachers about the importance of modeling without expectation can be challenging, especially if you are a school SLP who doesn’t have the luxury of coaching the parent in-person. Who can benefit from this speech therapy early intervention resource? PARENTS - One parent shared with me that they posted the example pages on their refrigerator as a reminder! I have also had situations in which one parent has a hard time getting buy-in from their co-parent - in this case it was helpful to have detailed examples and rationale. TEACHERS - Daycare, preschool, elementary school, special education, general education - all teachers can help to model without expectation! EARLY INTERVENTIONISTS - Whether it be a colleague in speech therapy early intervention, an occupational therapist, physical therapist, play therapist, music therapist, or ANY professional working with communication needs - these AAC Parent Handouts provide easy ways to model without expectation across natural, everyday contexts. As a therapist in speech therapy early intervention, and a parent to a young child, I’ve found that parent-guidance for getting their child to talk is usually too vague (for example, “talk all the time”, “narrate everything you do”, “ask lots of questions”). This can feel overwhelming and unclear for many parents and teachers. The goal of this resource is to provide parents and teachers with a toolkit of specific, evidence-based language stimulation strategies that can be embedded into their everyday home and/or classroom routines and play. Download now for a simple, yet thorough way to educate parents and teachers about how to support their child/student's language beyond the speech room! Welcome to part one of my mini series on Better Hearing and Speech Month: Early Intervention! Like I said last week, this year's theme is Early Intervention Counts. The sooner therapy is started, the better the outcomes. So, why does it take as long as two years before a speech and/or language impairment is not only detected but acted on? The simple answer- awareness! 45% of speech-language pathologists and audiologists believe that lack of awareness is the leading barrier to early detection. 57% of parents don't realize that without early detection, treatment takes longer and is more expensive. And as many as 64% of parents are unaware of the early signs to a speech and language disorder. Check out the info-graphic below to see how early intervention is transformative, efficient, necessary, and accessible. So what can we do? Spread the word! Help parents identify the signs of early speech and language disorders. Below are a few common signs of speech and language disorders. Find more at Identify the Signs. Doesn't smile or interact with others (birth +) Doesn't babble (4-7 months) Makes only a few sounds or gestures (7-12 months) Says only a few words (12-18 months) Words are not easily understood (18 months-2 years) Doesn't put words together to make sentences (2-3 years) Produces speech that is unclear, even to familiar people (2-3 years) Repeats first sounds of words or stretches sounds out in words (2.5-3 years) Uses a hoarse, breathy, or nasal-sounding voice In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month and their theme of Early Intervention Counts, I'm giving away a copy of Laura Mize's Teach Me to Talk: Therapy Manual.
