Today I've been catching up on some long overdue housework. As a quilter I must confess that my housework sometimes falls behind my creative pursuits. As I was sorting out a storage cupboard I found this beauty and had to revisit it. I've been quilting for so long now that I have a large 'back catalog' of quilts that haven't been seen by very many people. Yes I'm biased but I do think that this quilt is just too pretty not to show off! I love every little detail of Hearts Desire. And what's odd is that, if I had to recreate it today, I wouldn't change a thing. I look at these details and wonder how I had the patience to domestic machine quilt every last inch. Phew! Nowadays, I'm happy just to complete a 'quilt top' and move on. Interestingly, I still love the fabrics I selected. This was my first 'serious' applique pattern that I felt was a step up from easy or fun applique patterns. In fact I think this was the last hand drawn pattern I accomplished before I went digital. Check out those hearts! In this quilt design I can see my love for flowers, baskets, birds and leaves - the shapes and lines I favor have now become hallmarks of my style and patterns. I'm also really happy to see the 4x petal heart appear throughout the design - years before I started out on my Love Entwined journey. Obviously that precious coverlet had burrowed into my imagination years before I even realized! Hearts Desire is an applique design full of old world charm and plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the splendor of a blooming garden. 'Red December' by Gail Smith quilted by Angela McCorkle So many people ask me what Red December looks like? Good question! Luckily it's one Gail Smith can answer - here is her gorgeous version. Isn't it just stunning?! My blog readers are the best. Here I was sitting down to read my emails when a lovely hello came in from Gail, who duly informed me that she had finished my quilt pattern Red December, and would I like to see it? Well of course I did! My own Red December is on a chair waiting to be quilted. It's been there for a few years actually. In the meantime, I went ahead and made a Red December table cloth for Christmas as well as a matching cushion that was printed in a magazine. Oh I do love it and seeing it all made up here makes me love it all over again :) I might even take a moment now to imagine that my own is finished and is as gorgeous as Gail's... It's easy to imagine as she followed my original scheme of (what else?) red and white. I've always loved this pattern and must admit that I haven't done it justice because I haven't been able to show it off here on my blog. I think that sometimes, even when you design a quilt and share that design, until people can see the finished quilt, it can be hard to imagine just how beautiful it is. I always knew Red December was a beauty, and now I can prove it! Thanks so much Gail. You've really made my day. Wild Rose & Lilac This is a block from Part 4 of my free 2012 Mystery BOM Forget Me Not turn edge applique petals for the wild roses raw edge applique lilacs turn edge leaves some pencil detailing on the petals Like the previous blocks, I will be embellishing these blocks with decorative stitches at the end, when I plan my quilting. With the lilacs in this block, I am looking for tiny beads to stitch in amongst the applique so that the lilacs 'shimmer' in their cluster. How much or how little extra embellishment will vary block by block. You can keep it simple or really enjoy embellishing all the areas of small and fine detail. Fabric selection next to my sketch and alongside my background fabric Lilacs in deep to light hues of blue pink. Make sure that you check which side is fusible, to avoid sticking your little lilacs to your iron, this is too easy to do! I use fusible release paper when raw edge applique cutting out. It's great because you can re-use this paper 5 times before discarding. I use Wonder Under brand. This is the lilac 'shadow', it's raw edge and again, so simple. Creating the lilac backrground means that I don't have to cut so many little lilac shapes out. I was also toying with the idea of embroidering the lilacs on top of the 'shadow' fabric and if you have an embroidery machine, this is definitely an option for you. (I tried on my domestic and it didn't look effective). So I went ahead with my lilac applique. These are my leaves waiting to be cut out How is your Forget Me Not Block looking? We're past the half way point for my bright and fabulous free BOM 'Queen's Garden' I love sharing my designs and I love releasing a stunning design each year for free. And by free I, of course, mean completely free. There are no pesky sign ups or email lists or other hurdles. You're all more than welcome to take part. Now, just lately I've been getting a lot of emails about this BOM, there's been a sudden and unexpected surge of interest. So I thought I'd post this reminder of how and where to access this fun Block of the Month. This is a 10 Part BOM: the files are released each month. I always release BOMs on the 15th of the month, although this year I've been posting them a bit earlier, usually in the first week of the month owing to other conflicting schedules and overlap. The Finished Size is: 70 x 70 inches. The pattern is released in 10 parts: January - October 2018. You can download the pattern via the FILES area of my Free BOM Group. I know how interesting it is to see how everyone else makes the part of each block, so here's how I made my basket for Secret Garden Part 1. The first thing is, I really lovve this golden beige colour but I didn't like the direction of the print pattern, it looked a bit flat. So I cut it on a diagonal to change the print direction. It's a small change but it made a nice difference as far as my own eyes are concerned. And I will just add that I had enough fabric to do it with. Don't go fussy cutting or making diagonal cutting choices with the fabric allowance listed in the pattern - you always need extra for these options. It's a tiny change, but it works for me Normally I would have traced my 'weave' stripes from the pattern as pattern pieces to go ahead and applique using the fusible method. But, as I cut on the diagonal, I simply made strips instead It's time consuming, but I really do take my own advice and number all the shape pieces and indicate their grain with arrows. Then I trace these shapes onto fusible, cut them out and stick them in envelopes in batches until I'm ready to iron them down onto fabric. Let's Stencil: The Tulip ------------------------------Materials:Cutting matt Tracing pencil Permanent fine marker Craft cutting knife or scalpel Sharp scissors Paper towels Stubby paint brushes for stenciling: I like using round brushes, size 8 & 10 Small containers for mixing up colours Freezer Paper ( I use Reynolds Brand) Acrylic or textile paints (textile medium if applicable) Extra fabric for experimenting Plain background to be stenciled, approx a 12 ½inch block, however the size isn't as important as this workshop is focusing on technique. Whichever acrylic paint you choose, ensure that you use Textile Medium unless specified otherwise by the paint manufacturer. Textile Medium helps paint adhere to fabric—for better setting, and is always recommended. ------------------------------ A stencil pattern is what you create when you cut out selected segments (holes) from a design according to a line drawing. Starting with the line drawing that you want to turn into a stencil, trace this line drawing onto freezer paper (use a light box if required) Position freezer paper on cutting mat Then carefully cut out the design with a craft knife It will look like this when complete When cutting out your design, allow plenty of time. I find working with a scalpel best, however some people prefer sharp thin bladed decoupage scissors—use whatever method you are most comfortable with. You do not want to rush the cutting out as the lines will show up in your stenciling—jagged edging shows. If your work is neat, keep all the ‘cut outs’ separately for use later. You want to keep the bottom half of the leaves for shading, so don't discard them Iron your fabric and position your freezer paper stencil. On a mid heat, iron down the freezer paper. Do this carefully and ensure that all the lines are firmly ironed down as you do not want edges coming loose and lifting up when stenciling! Set up your paints and pre-mix the colours you want to use. For this workshop, I used green and red and to create a darker green for shading, I simply blended the two together. Use a new brush for each color. There will be no need to rinse your brushes during stenciling. Have plenty of paper toweling ready for blotting off excess paint from your brush. I can't stress this enough. Stenciling is not about 'painting' fabric, it is about building up layers of almost dry paint stippled into position - and these are very different things. Apply some paint to your blotting tissue. Now blot off any excess paint. It is important that your brush remain somewhat dry. Remember that you are building up color. When applying paint to your stencil, buff the color in with quick circular movements—with stenciling you are building up color, almost as if you were dry painting. DO NOT SATURATE THE STENCIL. Colour is blotted into the fabric with a dry brush. This allows you to go over areas and build up stronger color where desired, creating shading effects. If you saturate your brush, or if you did not iron down completely, parts of the freezer paper will lift—and this will lead to color seeping through and smearing. THIS IS TO BE AVOIDED. As below. When you reach an edge of color, such as red meeting green—use a plastic template as a barrier to keep colors separated. The stencil is now stenciled Lift up your fabric. The painted stencil should be dry to touch and NOT leaking through the fabric. Leaking, seeping & blurriness mean too much wet paint! This image below is how your underside should look - essential dry to touch with no bleed through. To create 2 color shading effects on a leaf, return to your earlier cut outs and re-position half of the leaf cut out back onto the flower, as shown below. Iron down the freezer paper piece on top of the paint. Iron down both leaf pieces. Painting the darker hue: Use the same circular dry method of stenciling. You are only covering half the painted leaf—you are covering the half you do NOT want painted a darker hue. Now, using a darker green, paint the top of the leaf The freezer paper acts as a barrier to protect the color beneath When dry, peel off the added freezer paper leaf pieces to reveal two tones of color Leave the stencil until dry to touch Then carefully peel back the freezer paper stencil as seen below Allow stencil to dry Turn over and iron on wrong side of fabric Turn to right side and iron over stencil to heat set Cover ironing board with pressed cloth or paper and heat set the paint by ironing on the back of your stencil with a dry iron set on cotton. Ironing on the back of your stencil sets the paint most successfully (3 -4 minutes). I use fine paper over the stencil to protect my iron against staining when ironing the front. Do you have a list of quilts you plan to make? I sure do. It includes all of the quilt methods and patterns I'd like to try one day and for years now that list has included a triangle quilt. Just a little while ago I finally got my act together and managed to make one!

Here we go again: we're back to making two borders this month, and what a beautiful set they make! Border 3 is all about entwined leaves; and in Part 11 this month, the top border has an ongoing flower / element / angel design whereas the bottom of Border 3 finishes with a bird. I have been charmed by this bird in the bottom corner, it's the only difference between the two blocks and immediately caught my eye when I first came across this quilt. Maybe because I always sneak a bird somewhere in my quilts designs too. Of course, this bird isn't so much snuck in as it is simply an extension of the elements of this design. I have spent a long time looking at Border 3 and I still don't have answers to the questions it has posed, so I'd love to hear your opinions You might wonder, as I often have when considering the original, what the elements used in border 3 stand for? It’s interesting to consider if the shapes running along all of border 3 are angels, guardians...or something else? These were drawn from the original as closely as possible and they do have this head/wing shape. Originally I thought they were candlesticks, then I changed my mind to Angels. What do you see? Of all the borders, Border 3 speaks to me as being the work of a person: someone with beliefs, values and ideas about their world. Someone who sat down and actually made this coverlet. It's easy to forget sometimes, that this coverlet is imbued with someone's personality. Sadly, I can't tell you anything more about that woman, so we'll have to let her design choices speak for her. I don't know why I like this block so much, perhaps because it's so unexpected and modern looking This is the central element, I think it's so charming Of all the blocks in this quilt, those in border 3 strike me as the most hopeful and remind me that this was the marriage coverlet of an unknown woman; someone very real, not just an idea. These design elements are a direct extension of her hopes and fears for the remaining days of her life. More than any other part of the quilt, these blocks remind me that we are re- creating a piece of history; handling an unknown woman’s legacy whilst creating our own heirloom. After much deliberation, I called this quilt Like a Diamond. I'd thought of naming it 'In the Sky' but then realised I'd printed out the label with the first name, so that settled it! Anyway, it feels good to have my first finish of the year, and one that's come together so nicely - and quickly! I took it outside to photograph it today, and was lucky to get all 3 quilts completed before the rain started again. It's most unseasonal weather, for which I am very grateful; I hate hot summers. There are 18 curvy background pieces, all in different blues - mostly navy, but with a few deep purples (hopefully not too girly!) and slightly lighter blues to give it added depth. I fused the star in place, but cut the centre out of the fusible web star, so there's only about 1cm of web around the edge. This made the star easier to quilt, but it also meant that there was no fusible web where the hole in the centre was. I left the hole on purpose, so there wouldn't be a big build-up of seams, but I didn't then want to accidentally fuse the centre of the star to the ironing board! I quilted a variety of swirly, loopy lines radiating from the star in a bright yellow embroidery thread, and used the same on the star itself, then filled the rest of the background quickly with a small loopy meander in navy BottomLine. This worked well to disguise a few small areas where the curved background pieces didn't want to lie completely flat.

Hospital Sketches Block #9 by Becky Brown Our last block in Hospital Sketches recalls a giant field hospital set up after the Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863. Gettysburg's three-day fight in Union territory resulted in the largest number of casualties in the war with 45,000 to 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded, missing or captured. Neighborhood volunteers were joined by official staff who traveled to tend to the wounded, among them several women discussed earlier, such as Georgiana Woolsey and Annie Bell. Sarah Middleton Robbins Broadhead (1831- 1910) Quaker Sarah Broadhead, 32 years old, was one of the Gettysburg volunteers. Four days after the battle: "This morning we started out to see the wounded, with as much food as we could scrape together, and some old quilts and pillows. It was very little, but yet better than nothing.... I assisted in feeding some of the severely wounded, when I perceived that they were suffering on account of not having their wounds dressed. I did not know whether I could render any assistance in that way, but I thought I would try. July 8 — Again at the hospital early this morning. Several physicians and lady nurses had come on from Washington the previous evening, and under their care things already began to look better." Block 9 by Janet Perkins Dr. Jonathan Letterman (1824-1872) The Union Army soon established a hospital near the railroad east of Gettysburg, naming it Camp Letterman for Dr. Jonathan Letterman, Medical Director for the Army of the Potomac who'd ably attended to wounded after the Battle of Antietam a year earlier. The hospital, which operated for only five months, was a huge temporary complex. Camp Letterman, 1863 Decorating hospitals with evergreen swags and wreaths was considered cheering. One learns to recognize photos of Camp Letterman by the decor. Block #9 by Bettina Havig During the weeks after the battle the wounded Union and Confederate soldiers were moved to more permanent hospitals or sent home while 4,200 too injured to travel remained at the Camp. The site began with 400 tent wards, each treating 10 soldiers. Dark days inspire black humor. Here Drs. Chamberlain and Lyford pose with a patient and two of their victims in their "Office." Camp Letterman was well-photographed. Organizations such as the Sanitary Commission, the Christian Commission and the State Relief Agencies set up their own areas. Sanitary Commission offices under an arch. The seated man with the white beard is New Yorker Gordon Winslow. The woman is probably Mrs. H.C. May Gordon Winslow (1807-1864) Winslow was a chaplain and a Sanitary Commission administrator. The King of Prussia Historical Society has a series of Gettysburg photographs labeled with names, helping us identify the people at Camp Letterman. http://www.kophistory.org/publicViewer.php?ID=120 The center woman in the plaid dress is Anna Morris Holstein, who served with her husband Major William Holstein in supplying the field hospitals for the Army of the Potomac. Anna Morris Ellis Holstein (1825-1900) CDV of Anna taken during the war with the field photo superimposed. Anna Holstein was from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After the Battle of Antietam in 1862 she and her husband "gave up our sweet country home, and from that date were 'dwellers in tents,' occupied usually in field hospitals, choosing that work because there was the greatest need, and knowing that while many were willing to work at home, but few could go to the front." Major William Hayman Holstein, Seward King, Mrs. Knowles, Anna Morris Holstein, Dr. H.C. May, Mrs. May, Rev. Gordon Winslow Perhaps this is a portrait of the Holstein's "Valued friends who regularly met in our tent, when the fatiguing duties of the day were over." Katherine Fish Winslow is thought to be the woman on the left with husband Gordon Winslow at right. The Doctor on the table is possibly Cyrus N. Chamberlain, the jokester from Massachusetts, and the seated woman is Sarah Smith Sampson from Maine. Block 9 by Paula Smith Sarah Smith Sampson (1836 - 1907) Sarah Smith Sampson from Bath worked with Maine Relief and spent several weeks at Camp Letterman. The larger photo looks to have been taken long after the war by the curly fringe (we'd call the hairstyle bangs). See block #4 for more information about the Maine organization. As patients died or recovered enough to travel home and to other hospitals the tents were packed to go to the next battle. By October only 300 patients remained and in November, after President Lincoln gave his short Gettysburg Address in the hospital cemetery, Camp Letterman closed. After that grueling duty the Holsteins went back to Pennsylvania in the summer of 1866. The Hosltein's farm in 1877 Anna published her memoir Three Years in Field Hospitals of the Army of the Potomac in 1867 and remained an activist, working to preserve Mount Vernon and the Valley Forge Battlefield, until her death at 75. I sewed with friends yesterday, so got the Hollow Cubes pieces out and spent a few hours arranging them on the design wall. I sewed together 5 vertical rows, so it's a start. This quilt won't be as big as the Tumbling Blocks quilt. There are 13 vertical rows, and there are 21 triangles in each row. I am excited to get it finished now! I had to number each piece, as it would be easy to turn those triangles the wrong way while sewing. My daughters and I are heading up to my Mom and Dad's today to celebrate the 4th.
