Escape Room like Code Hacker for the ancient civilization of Greece. This ancient history lesson is designed for 6th, 7th, or 8th-grade students studying ancient civilizations in a fun history activity supporting the CCSS. Each section tests student skills, knowledge, and understanding with a resource map on two printable pages and in a Google Form! Students use the resource map and clues to decipher a code entered into a Google Form. Can students break the codes to win billions in riches? Students who enter the correct codes win a chest of riches. In a fun, optional summary activity, students can complete a "what I would buy with the billions I won" activity, available for print or in a Google Ready format. Students must get the correct answers to progress to the next section, so grading is a snap! It's also a great group work assignment for Google break-out rooms, or it can be done individually. I am obsessed with escape rooms! They are so much fun! I wish that I could do one every day. On my spring break trip to Atlanta I was able to do three in one day and it was super exhilarating! Before my state test I decided that I wanted to do a fun review game for my kids and decided to try my hand at an escape room. It took a lot of trial and error, but it was a MASSIVE success. I decided to share my escape room plans with you as best as I can in case you want to try something similar in your classroom. Step 1: The days leading up to the escape room I rolled a suitcase around with me (You will see why) Step 2: I broke the students into four groups Step 3: I created a newspaper article that informed students that I was taking over the world and handed one out to each group. Newspaper Generator Step four: I hid a card in my miniature file cabinet that said, "Don't just stand there in limbo, take a look in the classroom window." Step five: The first set of clues to decipher that opened the Word Lock was hidden behind a book in the window. Figurative Language Word Lock Clues Step six: Inside of Lock #1was the POV clues POV Directional Lock Step seven: Inside of Lock #2 was a set of UV flashlights and 4 pieces of seemingly blank paper. Once the UV lights were turned on students will find a number on each of their pieces of paper. This opened the lockbox. Step eight: Inside the lock box was four ziplock bags with puzzle pieces and a short story for each of the groups. The students need to read the short story and then put together their puzzle. One of the puzzles will have the correct symbol answer written in UV pen, the other three will be distractors with penalties. Symbolism Door Lock Clues Step nine: Each group will get a reading passage with multiple choice questions. Once they finish the passages, if they answered the questions correctly they will get their groups number to contribute to the final lock box. When a challenge is finished and they know the "password", they will raise their hand to tell you privately. If they have the correct password, they will advance to another challenge and you will give them that envelope! You will need to print and cut the puzzles, using the visual guide to help you. Then, you will need to place them in envelopes or folders so that groups will work on only one challenge at a time. A classroom escape room is the perfect activity to get your students engaged. Here's all the tips and tricks for creating an easy, inexpensive escape room!

This slope and y-intercept Escape Room gives students a chance to race against the clock and each other while trying to escape a locked room -- all while practicing how to find slopes, intercepts, and equations. Escape rooms harness the natural competitive nature of middle-school students to encourage them to work cooperatively and to use critical thinking and comprehension skills to complete a series of tasks which allow them to succeed. This product features four math activities that must be solved to find the codes to “escape”. Two codes are found in series of slides that require students to find the slope and the y-intercept. A third lock code can be found by piecing together a jigsaw puzzle, then using the information to find an equation, after being given information about the rate of change and the starting point. The final lock requires students to use the slope formula and y-intercept to match pairs of points with the equation of the line going through them. The product gives both digital and non-digital options, or a combination of both. To use the digital version, students (or groups of students) need access to a device that has Internet capabilities. The teacher gives students a link to a private website that requires them to read and search for clues to unlock four different types of locks. The non-digital option allows the teacher to print out the puzzles and give one set to each student, or each group of students. The students can then go to the website to enter their answers, or simply write the lock codes down on their response sheet for easy checking. The packet also includes an optional certificate that can be given to successful students. Students get to design and build a 3D ESCAPE ROOM and develop a game simulation where players must solve math problems to escape the room. Teachers and users will need to decide what concepts they want students to create problems for (and solve). -Or use the Alternate version to apply and understand AREA and Perimeter. There a TWO versions: -The GAME version: This version DOES NOT work on specific concepts. Teachers are allowed to choose which concepts they want students to create math problems for (and solve). This means this PBL can be used throughout the math curriculum. It can be used to review concepts, show student understanding, and even as a form of assessment. For example: If the class is doing a unit on fractions the students would be asked to write math problems about FRACTIONS. Standard version (Math game play) -Use pages 9-46. -If you’re printing but don’t want to include all the instructions (which you could project instead) use pages 9, 12, 14-19, 21-24 (or 25-27), 30-34, 38-46. -The ALTERNATE version: Focuses on area, perimeter, and geometry. Use this version to build and apply those concepts and skills. Alternate EXTRA (Area, Perimeter, & Writing only) -In this order use pages 9, 48, 14-19, 28-39, 49-57. DO THE WHOLE THING -Use pages 9-46, 49-57 -If you’re printing but don’t want to include all the instructions (which you could project instead) use pages 9, 12, 14-19, 21-24 (or 25-27), 30-34, 38-46, 50-57. With this resource students WILL CREATE a miniature 3D version of an escape room. The sizes of the room will all be the same, but each student will create a unique version based on their own ideas, imagination, and application of skills. Students design a room that contains ten or more different pieces of furnishings (all in one place) and each piece has a correlating math problem (also created by the student). The math problems will vary based on teacher choice or by choosing the area and perimeter version. This PBL includes extensions ideas, STEM opportunities, and art elements. (teacher choice) - - - - - - Materials Needed: -computer paper -card stock (optional for the house building) -crayons and colored pencils -scissors -tape and glue Time: The time frame for completing this project will vary greatly. If you are planning to complete it in a week, give 45-60 minutes per day or longer. All students will work at different rates, but by the end of the week students should be finishing the required steps (1-8) or trying some of the additional tasks. -Time can vary based on many factors. --This PBL focuses on pushing students to explore, create, design, and research a decade while applying problem solving techniques and collaborating with others. It allows for easy differentiation, so students can work at a pace they will be successful at.
