Erwin Rommel est sans doute le plus connu des généraux allemands de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Plus de soixante ans après sa mort, il est encore vu comme le soldat exemplaire, le tacticien intègre, qui inspire le respect aussi bien pour sa formidable maîtrise de l'art de la guerre que pour s'être montré réservé avec le régime nazi. Et le fait qu'il ait justement été contraint de se donner la mort sur l'ordre de Hitler est pour beaucoup dans la construction de cette image. Or, à la lumière des archives et des dernières études sérieuses parues pour la plupart en langue allemande,il convient de remettre en question cette image apologétique de Rommel. Il s'avère en effet que celui-ci a été un partisan convaincu du Führer et que sa gloire est redevable en partie à la propagande nazie de Joseph Goebbels, qui en a fait un « dieu de la guerre » issu du peuple, comme Hitler, ainsi qu'à l'ennemi britannique, qui lui a attribué des qualités presque surnaturelles. Cette biographie critique présente ainsi un portrait authentique de l'homme, qui se distingue de l'image apologétique et mythique mise en avant depuis plus d'un demi-siècle.
