Almost every English teacher has to assign a narrative writing assignment at some point in the course of their curriculum, and here's a way to do it digitally using the concept of "choose-your-own-adventure". The Premise: The teacher and students all begin at the same place - the climax of the novel that you're studying together (i.e. the moment Mercutio and Tybalt are killed in Romeo and Juliet). Using this resource, the teacher and students brainstorm the possible characters, events, and endings that could have resulted from that moment differently from how the author actually arranged the story. Then, the class outlines the possible events and choices that characters could have made using the graphic organizer outline. Finally, students are guided through the Google Applied Digital Skills curriculum to learn how to link their slides together and tell a story! What's Included? In this product, you will find: A thorough lesson plan with modifications and extensions A sample story that I wrote based on Of Mice and Men A guided brainstorming sheet A graphic organizer outline A fully editable rubric Why You Need This Product This alternate ending assignment not only will shake up how you've been teaching narrative for so long, but it will newly engage students in the writing process. Now, instead of an intimidating page limit, students are looking at narrative in smaller pieces and more deeply questioning why characters do what they do. The assignment helps students to be intentional about their choices because the writing is clearly driven toward new possible endings.
