Looking for a great activity for teaching the Engineering Design Process, Fairy Tale Unit, or just as a fun STEM Challenge? Then this is the perfect STEM challenge for you!! With this fun STEM Challenge, children are asked to engineer a pair of shoes for your principal or assistant principal. This lesson starts with reading the classic story of The Elves and the Shoemaker. This book had really detailed shoes that you could use to show the students examples of the various types of shoes that were made. Then students are able to watch a video of tennis shoes being made. Finally, the students would be asked to engineer a pair of shoes of their choice for your principal or assistant principal (or any teacher of your choice). Again, my hope is that children really work on the design, detail, and functionality of the shoes. I have my students for 40 minutes at a time. This lesson provides links to the story and then the video on how shoes are made. Then it gives you the challenge, suggested materials, and guides you through the process of getting kids ready to complete the challenge. You could possibly extend it into a two or three-week lesson activity. Please feel free to share any feedback. I have more resources if you feel this one was helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my resources! I did this lesson with 3rd-grade students. However, I feel that this lesson could be used with Kindergarten through 5th-grade students. You would just have to scaffold the lesson based on the age level. Kindergarten and 1st grade could use this lesson to learn about simple measurement, length, pairs (groups of two), and even left and right. They could make shoes, but they may not be as detailed as the upper grades. 2nd through 5th graders could focus more on the shoes fitting by using exact measurements and the function of the shoe. Prosthetic Design STEM Challenge After learning the history and uses of prosthetic legs, students use the engineering design process to build a prosthetic leg that is interchangeable for multiple people. This design challenge is followed by a research extension to design a prosthetic leg for an animal. Lesson Sequence: Introduce real-world careers of biomedical engineers and show a video on fabricating a prosthetic leg Read about the history of prosthetics Learn important concepts related to prosthetics and complete an activity sheet Complete the "Who needs a Prosthetic?" activity sheet Complete the Prosthetic Leg design challenge in small groups Research extension: research and design a prosthetic leg for an animal. Students will research the function and structure of the limbs of the animal chosen and then draw and label a design idea for a prosthetic.
