Doors are much easier to seal than windows as they have fewer moving parts. To add weather stripping so it doesn't cause binding, it is best to even out the gaps around your door before starting. If possible, shim the door hinges to create a uniform gap all the way around your door. The weatherstripping you should use is the same used for windows. Plastic V-strips and spring bronze are great for the top and sides of the door. You must use a different material for the bottom as you deal with heavy foot traffic. There are special seals designed for door bottoms including door sweeps, door shoes and thresholds. A door sweep attaches to the bottom face of the door; its usually rubber gasket that drags along the floor or threshold to create a seal. A door shoe fits on the bottom edge of the door with a flexible gasket pressing tightly against the floor or threshold. A metal threshold with a rubber gasket does the opposite; it presses Agustin the bottom of the door to stop drafts. These tools can be used independently or in combination when necessary. If you have a gap below your door that is too large for a gasket to work properly, a door shoe and a threshold can be combined to create a seal. Garage doors have their own special seals (usually made of rubber) that attach to the bottom of the door and between the jams. A gap as small as 1/4 inch along the bottom of a 36 inch door is the equivalent of having a 3 inch square hold in your door. Calculate the cost of electricity! In this activity students “choose” their day, by working through a series of options following a imaginary secondary school day. With each choice they make they will complete a calculation to find the resulting cost of electricity. With the exception of electricity prices for the Time of Use version, all information needed to complete the calculation is provided for each situation. This science/math activity was originally created for (and is still used in) my own science classes. It is ideal for students who need a little more guidance when it comes to completing cost of energy calculations. Two versions of the activity are included, one specifying the use of local Time of Use Pricing, the other instructing students to use an average cost of 9¢/kWh (the two versions are identical except for this distinction). Both versions are in color, but print well in black and white. Following the conclusion of their “day”, students assess their energy use, create a plan to reduce their consumption, and look for patterns in the energy use of others. The reflection and discussion questions (not assessed in the rubric) ask students to think about assumptions (e.g. that a month has 30 days) and how they impact calculations. The product includes access to editable author-created digital overlays that work with TpT's Digital Activities program. This activity addresses multiple expectations from the Ontario Science Curriculum, SNC1P and SNC1D. It is also useful for practicing multi-step calculations in math classes.
