Hi There! Last week I posted on Facebook about how my team's hallway needed a spring make-over. We were stuck in winter mode and the dark blue butcher paper was starting to depress me. I needed color! I needed funshine... yes... I said FUNSHINE!! This week, I had planned a lesson on self-esteem for my 4th graders. Part of our curriculum is to teach students about tobacco and alcohol resistance. I always start this conversation with lessons on self-esteem and friendships. I started the lesson with a quick powerpoint with two pictures: one of a child frowning and looking down, the other of a child smiling and looking confident. I had the students brainstorm words to describe each of the kids. Then I introduced them to the term self-esteem. We then went to kids health.org and read the article "The Story of Self-Esteem". I use kids health.org a lot. It has great articles written so that kids can understand the concepts. The website even has a read-aloud feature. My students LOVE it because it is a computer voice that often pronounces words incorrectly and they think that is hilarious! After we added our notes to our health notebooks, I introduced the "Garden of Greatness" craft. I had each student brainstorm a list of things that he or she is good at, things that made them feel important, or things that made them feel unique and special. I passed out strips of bright colored paper and circles pre-labeled with their names. Students glued between 4 and 8 of the strips onto the back of the circle. When that was done, they turned over the flowers to the front side and wrote ideas off of their list onto the strips of paper. To finish the project, I collected the flowers and stapled them onto the bulletin board. As I stapled, I wrapped each petal to the back. The finish product turned out great! Bright, colorful, and full of FUNSHINE!! Thanks for visiting! Here are few new resources recently added to my TeachersPayTeachers store: Get it FREE! 1-2-3 Come Do Some "Souper" Fun Craftivities With Me This "craftivity" packet is very versatile. I have templates that you can use at the end of the school year, where students write about the"souper" summer they are looking forward to, or the "souper" year they had; or they can make one for your next year's kiddos explaining why they are going to have a "souper" year in __________ grade. Simply run off which ever pattern you need. Students color the template and then trace it on a sheet of construction paper. I used red to blend in with the soup can, but you could offer a variety of colors. This will become the "inside" section of the can where they'll complete the writing prompt and then "hinge" it at the top with a small piece of tape or a staple, in such a way that it flips up to reveal what they wrote. If you've incorporated the popular "Bucket Fillers" program in your classroom, the "souper" compliment flip up or windsock, fits in nicely, and goes a long way in building a child's self-esteem. For this prompt, I prefer the windsock as it's a nice way to review the 3D cylinder shape as well as ABAB patterning. Here's How To Make One: I didn’t have a big sheet of red construction paper, so I had to tape two smaller ones together. The “compliment strips” are the width of a ruler and the length of the paper. I chose two colors for more pop, as well as a way to review a color pattern. Students each get a stack of 10 strips (5 of each color). Have them glue the strips to the bottom of their large sheet of paper that has their soup can glued to the front. I left 1/2 an inch of space in between the strips. Put students in groups of 9. Review what an adjective is and then brainstorm nice things (compliments) that they could write about each other. Children write something about themselves on one of the strips, and then pass their paper to the next person. Passing continues within the group ’til everyone has written something on each person’s windsock. The teacher visits each group and writes something for each child on the 10th strip. Students gently curve their flat “souper can” into a cylinder shape and staple the ends together. Punch a hole on either side, attach a 12 inch piece of yarn and dangle from the ceiling. Having students make a windsock for your next year's kiddos would also make a wonderful back-to-school welcome display. After the first day, take them down and pass them out to your new students. They read and share with the class. Hopefully these will help ease first day jitters and get your students excited about the year ahead. Finally, to help celebrate special holidays, there are patterns for a "souper" mom or dad, as well as one they can make for Grandparent's Day, plus a blank one to fill in with whatever. Keep in mind, that any of the 2D writing prompt options, can easily be turned into the 3D cylinder shaped windsock craft,by simply having them write on the strips of paper. Click on the link to view/download the "Souper" Writing Prompt Craftivity Packet. Thanks for visiting today. Even though it's Sunday, and typically my day of rest after church, I have some very tempting "souper" craftivities in the works... Does anyone else out there get excited about making things and designing lessons for their classroom? After all, it is actually our home-away-from-home. Making a Self-Portrait is always a fun and enriching activity. I am going to describe today's learning experience in doing a self-portrait. First I showed the paper the students would use and I projected it on a white board. You can use a smart board of course or just chart paper I recommend having something to model drawing yourself. We defined self-portrait and thought about which shapes we have in our bodies. I asked a volunteer to come to the front and asked the kids to help me draw her face. I add all details the children suggested. We were happy with the results. I modeled using a mirror to look at my face and draw it. After I finished my self-portrait I asked for the students input. They were fantastic. They asked me to add my hanging little camera purse, earrings, glasses, my toes showing because I was wearing sandals, patterns from my dress, and more. I then handed a mirror and a paper to each student. The kids had a ball looking at their faces in the mirror They could work sitting or standing. And look how this girl is so focused on her drawing. Even the younger ones did an amazing job. Princesses did a great job too. After they were all ready we shared them with the group. I have different ways of sharing work. We had targeted our audience. It was our friends and our parents as we thought that this would be a great portfolio piece. The way we chose to share today was for me to hold each drawing and ask the class to tell what they liked about the self-portrait I was holding. And here are some more self-portrait samples. You can download the self-portrait template by clicking on the picture below. If you are doing portfolio with your class I have made two templates that can be useful. One to be used at the beginning of the school year and another one for the end of the school year. This way we can see the progress of drawing a self-portrait. Click on the pictures below to download the templates.

A through Z Countdown to Summer This A through Z Countdown to Summer is a great activity to help me get through the last 26 days of school! This activity consists of 26 fun, low maintenance activities that correlates with each letter of the alphabet. Each daily activity requires little to no prep work for me!! Many of these end of school countdowns that I have found online require a lot of prep work, notes home, reminders, etc. I did not want that! These daily activities are simple activities that provide a fun brain break for the students! Here is a look into each day's activities: Here is the poster I display the letter of the day on. Here is a look into C's activity! This is what the letter activity cards look like: I begin this activity 26 school days before the end of the year. I start with the letter A and do a letter each day until the last day of school. Each day I surprise my students on what the letter activity for the day is going to be. They love to guess what activity they will get to do for each letter! I roll up each activity card and place it in a balloon labeled with that letter. At the end of the day we pop the balloon and see what fun activity we get to do for the last hour of the day. I save the activity for the end of the day because the students are usually checked out by then. Plus I use it as a behavior management tool. If I have students that are not behaving during the day I have them miss out on the fun end of the day letter activity. Click HERE to download my A through Z Countdown to Summer activity from my TpT store! I pair this activity with this activity..... End of School Alphabet Countdown Booklet This activity is a great end of the school year concept review! It's perfect to use for any grade! I begin this activity 26 school days before the last day of school. Each day I have the students think of the concepts they have learned throughout the school year that begins with the letter of the day. For example, on the first day of the activity the students think of all the things they learned throughout the year that begins with the letter A. Some examples are: addition, antonyms, etc. I like to have the students work on this activity independently first. Then, after some time I allow the students to work with their group. Finally, we share and discuss what everyone put together as a class. As we share, I use it as a great review opportunity. The students will amaze you on how much they remember and what they can think of for each letter! Here is an example of how many things we think of for each letter! If you don't want to make the entire booklet for this activity you could always use the one page A though Z worksheet instead! Click HERE to download my End of School Alphabet Countdown Booklet from my TpT Store! Autograph Booklet At the end of the school year we always have a yearbook signing party. It never fails I have tons of students who do not purchase a yearbook each year. So I put together this autograph booklet for the students to sign during the yearbook signing party. Since it's only one page I make one for each of my students...even if they bought a yearbook. I made it just one page (copied front to back) because let's face it the last thing I want to do at the end of the year is make tons of copies. LOL! Also it never fails we are always running low on paper at the end of the school year. This booklet works out perfect and there is always plenty of room for all the student's signatures. You also can have the students spend some time coloring it! :) Here is the front of the booklet. There is a spot for the student's name, the school, and year. I have made this page specific for each grade level. Plenty of room for autographs! The back of the booklet is reserved for the teachers to sign and write a message to the students. Click HERE to download my Autograph Booklet from my TpT Store! Summer Reading Challenge I give this Summer Reading Challenge to my students on the last day of school. I have them complete it with their families over the summer to keep their reading skills up. Those students who complete the reading challenge over the summer and return it to me on the first day of the new school year get a reward! Here is the note I send home to my parents explaining the Summer Reading Challenge and why it's important for their child to read over the summer. Here is the summer reading challenge. I have the parents initial in each box as their child completes the activity. Click HERE to download my Summer Reading Challenge from my TpT Store! Memory Binders/Student Portfolios I keep a memory binder/portfolio for each of my students throughout the school year. I keep writing activities, special work, assessments, etc. in the binder. I use these monthly dividers to organize all the paperwork inside each binder. I run the dividers on cardstock paper and allow the students to color it how they wish! At the end of the school year the students get to take their binders home as a parent gift! It's a great way to showcase each student's progress throughout the year to their parents! Don't forget to integrate technology into your last couple weeks of school by planning end of year activities to keep your students engaged! I have some ideas on how you can use iPads to SAMR sail until the last day of school. SAMR is an acronym I use when planning iPad activities in my classroom. It stands for Substitute, Augment, Modify, and Redefine. Basically, when mapping out my instruction, I think of how technology can be added into the lesson and at what level. As you go from S to A to M to R, you are increasing the fanciness
