Having lost her husband nearly three years earlier and her much-loved Aunt Letty that year, she struggles to maintain the boarding house and feed and care for those who live in it. Finally, she hires a woman named Emily Johnson to help her. Even though Maggie is white and Emily is black, the two women become friends. When Emily and her husband Nate suffer a disaster, the financially-challenged Maggie is determined to find a way to help them.

Earlier this summer, I had the pleasure of assisting Shuva Rahim of Accent Images with the wedding of Nate and Emily. We began the day at Nate and Emily's Iowa City home where they shared their first look. The expressions on their faces as they saw each other for the first time were simply perfect. You could see the excitement, joy, and love they felt. I love, love, love Emily's dress! She had it special ordered from England and it was stunning. The pale pink chiffon was beautiful and airy, while the silvery sparkle gave it a gorgeous elegance. I think her bouquet was a perfect addition. She decided to forgo the traditional roses and, instead, chose a lovely array of flowers accented with peacock feathers. The colors and textures together were perfect. Nate's suit tied nicely in with their peacock feather theme. The tans and blues tied beautifully into the feather in his boutonniere. Their first dance was beautiful. I love this image above. You can see all the joy in their faces. Love it! Their DJ was not your modern DJ. He played only vinyl records for the entire event. It was so much fun to hear and see. I'm no music guru by any stretch of the imagination, but there is something a little different and fun about listening to music being played from vinyl records. At the end of the evening, we headed outside in the July heat for some beautiful moments at sunset. I love golden hour. The warm light from the sunset makes for such a romantic, almost ethereal, setting. Thank you, Shuva, for allowing me to assist you with this lovely day and congratulations, Nate and Emily! Best wishes to you both!
