French Vintage needlepoint tapestry by JC Bissery Stunning, very large needlepoint tapestry signed JC Bissery. Entitled Soleil Vegetal which I would translate to Organic Sun. 1960/70's vintage wall decor. Made of wool thread on a canvas backing. 93cm x 59cm width x height 36.5" x 23.25" It would make a great cushion or it could be framed again as a wall hanging. The embroidery itself is in excellent condition. The corners have been cut and there are a few puncture marks on the canvas edges where it was previously framed and some water stains - see photos but these do not encroach on the stitched area. These canvas tapestries with needlepoint or petit point embroidery were made back in the 60's in rural France when there was no telly of an evening. I have met several elderly ladies who made these as teenagers and kept them until now hanging on their walls above their beds. Each tapestry although similar in design is unique as each person chose the colours of the threads. They took literally months of work to make. The designs for these embroideries were very much influenced by artists like `JC Bissery, Jean Picart Le Doux andJean Lurcat. They and other artists like Picasso worked for Aubusson producing stunning carpets and tapestries. These needlepoint canvases were usually Aubusson designs that were then copied onto canvas. I have a large and varied collection of these beautiful tapestries let me know if you are interested. If you have any questions do let me know I'll be happy to help. I experimented with a bunch of different stitches for her garter. I'm sure there's a name for what I did, but I don't know it. It's alternating chain stitch of sorts. I was very pleased to discover that it ended up looking like knitting's garter stitch! How appropriate. The dress looks all dirty 'cause I kept trying different fill stitches to enhance the fringe look. Almost had it with some simple feather lines, but alas, not quite right.
French embroidery artist Noboru Hoareau recently stitched this fun series of creepy insects, spiders, and arthropods comprised mostly of beads. Each piece is embroidered into fabric and framed, an objects he refers to as a “embroidery haute couture box bug”. You can see much more in his Etsy shop. A birthday present for my sister in Colorado.... who is now moving to ALASKA! I made this wall hanging for her, but if I would have known, I should have made a big throw to keep her warm way up north! This pattern is called "Gypsy" and the fabric is French General.
