In recent years she has added traditional darning and mending techniques to her work, aiming to promote sustainability in textiles and garments.Zenzie Tinker ACRZenzie’s conservation journey began in the early 1980’s with a degree in the History of Design, specialising in textiles and dress followed by a five year apprenticeship training in textile and tapestry conservation at Ksynia Marko’s London conservation studio. Zenzie then worked in museums for over a decade, first as Costume Conservator at the Museum of London and then as a Senior Textile Conservator at the Victoria & Albert Museum where she consolidated her costume expertise.In 2002, Zenzie left the V&A to establish her freelance business, Zenzie Tinker Conservation in Brighton. Fast forward two decades and Zenzie now leads an experienced team of textile and paper conservators treating a wide range of textiles out of a suite of rooms in a large, conservation studio. As well as standout historic dress projects including conserving the Ellen Terry theatrical dress collection at Smallhythe (National Trust), the multi-layered clothing of the extraordinary Royal Funeral Effigies at Westminster Abbey and caring for the Legal Dress Collection at the Royal Courts of Justice, the team have also worked on more contemporary costume including David Bowie stage outfits, almost 200 Stephen Jones hats and many spectacular couture gowns.Zenzie Tinker Conservation are also currently working on an exciting workshop and talks programme.Flora Collingwood-Norris Flora Collingwood-Norris a knitwear designer, maker and mender who has just published “Visible creative mending for knitwear”. Flora started her own label, Collingwood-Norris, in 2016 after years of working freelance creating catwalk samples for the likes of Christopher Kane, Jasper Conran and House of Holland, as well as designing hand knit patterns and teaching.With a strong emphasis on colour, often inspired by the Scottish landscapes around her, Flora creates many of her designs in her small studio in the Scottish Borders, on vintage knitting machines, finishing each piece by hand. Working exclusively with natural fibres and creating pieces that will transcend seasonal trends, Flora also works with a small, local manufacturer to utilise digital knitting technology for designs that aren’t possible to make on her own machinery.In 2017 Flora started exploring the possibilities of visible mending, as her large collection of second-hand sweaters needed some tender loving care. In her latest projects “Sweater sauce”, “I would not do something like that” and Sleik-zine Ýrúrarí raises questions on our absurd consumption habits of textiles and tries out new ways of making unwanted clothes last longer as a one of a kind art- and design pieces. Ýr is also one of four members of the multiart and performance group CGFC.Ýr studied textile design at Reykjavík School of Visual Arts and got her BA in textile design from Glasgow School of Art in 2017. Her work has been showcased in grass-root art spaces in Reykjavík such as Gallerý Port, Ekkisens and Flæði and also in WIP residency at Textile Art Center in New York. Pieces by Ýrúrarí can now be found in the collections of Textiel Museum in The Netherlands, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Germany and Museum of International folk Art in New Mexico. Another one from the list of essential hand embroidery stitches. As you may guess by the name, this stitch resembles a chain. However, there's more to its looks and variety. Today I'm going to cover the chain stitch, reverse chain stitch and broad chain stitch. Take a look here for other stitches. Last time I talked about a lazy daisy stitch, which is one of the basic stitches in hand embroidery. As I mentioned in my previous post, another name for it is a “detached chain stitch”, and from this post, you will see why. So, first of all, let's see how to chain stitch: Bring the needle up through the fabric and bring it back down right next to it. As you are making a loop, pierce the fabric in a short distance from the starting point, bringing the needle up inside the loop. Bring the needle back down next to the previous point, making a loop again. Repeat the previous steps. Make sure that points 1 and 3, and points 2 and 4 are on the same lines, being parallel to each other. Or you can stitch the chain like this – pulling the thread under the tip of your needle as you go. When you finish the line, fix your last chain link with a running stitch. Does it ring a bell? That's right, the same way we stitched lazy daisy! That's why it is also called a detached chain stitch. It can actually be stitched in reverse direction, like back stitch. This way you start from the “end” - first make a running stitch, then make a loop pulling the thread under the first running stitch. As you stitch new chain links, the thread will be pulled under the previous ones. You can find different names for it: reverse chain stitch or backstitched chain stitch. But the most important is that the look of the chain doesn't differ whatever direction you choose to stitch it. So, this is how you can chain stitch! It is often used for stitching lines, curves, lettering and sometimes as a filler stitch to cover certain areas. It can also be used in combination with other stitches and embellished with beads, so the final look depends only on your fantasy! The final look will also depend on the number of floss strands in your needle and the distance between the “base” points of the stitch. For example, in the picture above the third and fourth rows are stitched with the loops having only one base point, but the different number of thread strands and different length of the stitch. In the last row, you can notice that the distance between the “base points” of the loop is much wider, which makes the chain broader. And that's exactly how it is called among stitchers: broad chain stitch or open chain stitch. Note, that when you finish the line of broad chain stitch, you will need two running stitches to anchor the last loop and keep its form similar to all the previous ones. I don't use the chain stitch so often in my embroidery, but if I do, I prefer the “tight” look of it, when the length of stitches is rather small and the loop has only one point as a base. That is, row 3 and 4 in the picture above. Although stitching it with one strand of floss in the needle (like row 4) is reeeally tiring and time-consuming (unless there is some kind of trick to make is faster??), I still like the kind of thickness it gives to a fine line. Yes, it's probably strange to call a line “fine” and “thick” at the same time, but what I mean is that comparing to stem stitch or back stitch, chain stitch line has a nice sturdiness to it, even when embroidered with one strand of floss in the needle.
