Through densely laid cross-stitches and whorls of thread, Han Cao revitalizes discarded photographs and postcards. Similar to the artist’s previous projects, her latest series New Nostalgia strikes a balance between the original subjects and the fiber-based additions. Sometimes covering faces with sparse dandelion puffs or confetti-like burst, Cao redefines the vintage pieces and explores how narratives linger as she stitches plumes of train steam that trail beyond the initial photograph’s edges. A delightful little gift set of two 1940’s Italian embroidered guest towels, found in a little shop in Serrento, Italy. We’ve presented them with Italian chamomile soap. They have a lovely slight texture and we think they’re probably cotton or linen. As with all of our items, this little set will come wrapped in tissue and a ribbon, along with a little gift tag. This features the image of a vintage Italian postcard. Should you want a personal message on the little gift tag, please do fill in the “message” section on the item before you checkout, or just send it in a message to us. Italian artist Francesca Colussi Cramer started embroidering patterns and grids onto found photographs four years ago when she discovered a small vintage shop down the street from her house in North Wales. She was enthralled with the nostalgic feel of the store’s old images and postcards, and began adding thread to provide a visual and physical contrast to the original work. Some of her additions are abstract, like images which appear like patchwork quilts, while for others she makes more representational choices by layering the real life hues of a location or person in small bursts of color. These French vintage postcards are beautiful in themselves. But with embroidered details and mixed media elements in cool colors, it has become a beautiful piece of art. Nice to put in a nice old frame, pin on your notice board or give it another nice place in your home. The cards are no longer suitable for writing on the back or for sending as a separate card.
Art & Fashion together here in embroidery works of three amazing artists, Jose Romussi, (above & below), Maurizio Anzeri (further below) and Ausra Osipaviciute (bottom.) They each work with photography (and embroidery), to create a stunning mixed media pieces that blur the lines between art, fashion and style! Have a look.... Chilean artist Jose Romussi (above), takes vintage black & white photograph of ballerina and saw over some colorful thread adding a playful touch to their frozen posture. If you like this kind of mixed media, you should also check the more complex work of Maurizio Anzeri, below. I love these works, a little creepy and a lot contemporary (to me) and 200% something I want on my walls. Ausra Osipaviciute, below... Above, shot by Lithuanian photographer Ausra Osipaviciute and embroidered by Gintare Pasakarnyte. Some photos found on www.Trendland.com.

Starting with vintage photography and illustrations of models sporting fashions from the 1950s, Amsterdam-based artist Hinke Schreuders applies a rich layer of hand-stitched embroidery, beading, lace, and flourishes of ink to entirely new images that can be both unsettling and exuberant. The pieces seen here are part of an ongoing series called Works on Paper, started in 2008. With her work Schreuders says she seeks to “subtly confuse notions of feminine vulnerability and reinforce the position of embroidery as an artistic medium,” something I think we can all agree she has done masterfully.
