Today I will be sharing a tutorial on how to make a crazy rails quilt. (You can see more photos of my crazy rails quilt here, if you'd like.) My quilt was inspired by a vintage quilt (below) that belongs to Rebecca, who is a member of my modern quilt guild. Someone in Rebecca's family was on the verge of throwing this quilt away, but her dad stepped in a saved it. I'm so glad that this quilt was rescued. It's a beauty... so inspiring! This is the kind of quilt that one could sit under and look at the fabrics for hours. I just love it! This quilt isn't complicated, by any means, but it's the sheer number of pieces that makes it challenging. Here is a simple tutorial for you, in case you would like to make a crazy rails quilt of your own! I'm sure that I will be revisiting this pattern myself, before too long. I seem to be unable to make just one version of any quilt. :) A few things to note: All seam allowances are 1/4". Each block finishes at 3". Each individual "rail" finishes at 1" x 3". I made blocks by strip piecing, mostly, but I also pieced some blocks individually. I like doing both. Strip piecing saves a lot of time, but I am able to use up smaller pieces by making blocks one at a time. The mix of the two methods gave me a nice variety of blocks to work with in the final layout. It is a good idea to reduce your stitch length while strip piecing, so the seams don't start to separate while the blocks are being handled or arranged. (I use a stitch length setting just under 2 on my Juki, but all sewing machines vary.) To make 1 block at a time: Cut three strips of fabric 1 1/2" x 4". Sew the strips together and press seams to the side, or open, whichever you prefer. I generally press the seams toward the darker fabrics. Trim the block to 3 1/2" square. There is very little waste, as you can see. I trimmed from both ends of the block, to ensure that the block is exactly square. To make 2 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 7 1/2". Sew together and press seams. Trim the strip set to make 2 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. To make 3 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 11". Sew together and press. Trim the strip set to make 3 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. To make 4 blocks at a time: Cut 3 strips 1 1/2" x 14 1/2". Sew together and press. Trim the strip set to make 4 blocks, each measuring 3 1/2" square. You could make more that 4 blocks at a time, if you wanted to. Personally, I prefer to have fewer blocks that are exactly the same. Playing with different fabric combinations was a lot of fun! Strip piecing definitely helps make this quilt manageable. I made these 10 blocks in a matter of a few minutes. One other handy thing....I'm piecing a log cabin quilt (measurements here) that also uses 1 1/2" wide strips. It's nice to be able to cut fabric for both quilts at once! Quilt Sizes: size measurements # of blocks needed block layout baby 36” x 36” 144 12 x 12 small lap 48” x 60” 320 16 x 20 large lap 60” x 72” 480 20 x 24 twin 66” x 90” 660 22 x 30 queen 90” x 96” 960 30 x 32 king 108” x 108” 1296 36 x 36 I'm not going to give specific yardage requirements for each quilt size, but if you are guesstimating, a baby size quilt usually requires about 1 1/2 to 2 yards of fabric. A lap size quilt generally uses 3 1/2 to 4 yards of fabric. A twin generally uses between 5 1/2 to 6 yards of fabric. A queen generally requires about 7 1/2 to 8 yards of fabric. A king size quilt can use in the ballpark of 10 yards of fabric. This quilt has more seams than most, so it will probably require more fabric than the amounts listed. These are just very general guidelines for an idea of how much fabric you may need. If you think making a whole quilt is just crazy, (and it might be!) you could also use the block measurements for placemats. That would be pretty fun, too! Nee hoor, gewoon uit de Quiltmania. In mei of juni werd ik gebeld of ik het leuk zou vinden om in het bloggershoekje van de Quiltmania te staan. Hoezo leuk, M*E*G*A*L*E*U*K! En deze week was het zover, twee hele pagina's over mezelf in zo'n leuk blad. Met allemaal foto's, van mij, mijn huis en mijn quilts. Heel onwerkelijk om zo over jezelf te lezen, ben stiekem een beetje trots! Grappig was dat ik naar Deventer ging met mijn oudste vriendin, we kennen elkaar al ruim 40 jaar, en al in de bus herkend werd. Op het station herkende ik haar gelukkig ook en begon de kwek, kijk en giebeldag. Eerst koffie natuurlijk, ieder een reis achter de rug en zin in een prachtige cappuccino van Bagels en Beans; daar zeg je U tegen, heerlijk. Het jaarlijks terugkerend ritueel is het uitwisselen van verjaarscadeaus, we zijn vlak na elkaar jarig en hebben zowaar ieder een kind op elkaars verjaardag gekregen, zou er toch meer zijn? Ik werd verwend met een wel heel bijzonder cadeau: Een miniquiltje! Heel dierbaar, deze krijgt een ereplaats! Gezellig over de tentoonstellingen en door de stad gestruind, we hadden dezelfde favoriet: All things bright and beautiful van Ief van der Zon, ik zou hem zó willen maken! Natuurlijk gezellig geluncht, in een binnentuin in de stad; het restaurant werd door verstandelijk beperkte jongeren gerund en was stampvol. Heerlijke warme broodjes en een drankje. Voor je het weet is de dag om en moet je weer in de trein. Reuzegezellige reis met twee dames die me herkenden van mijn blog, wat hadden die al veel gemaakt, dan voel je je weer even een beginnertje! Vrijdag begon goed, als iedere morgen werd ik begroet door mijn gevederde vriendinnen, ze nemen de tuinstoelen in beslag tot ze wat lekkers krijgen... Een rondje kamers en de kapper verder, kwam Carina even koffiedrinken, met haar vers gequilte Stonefield. Ze moest hem zelf ook nog even goed belijken... Koffie werd een broodje, wandeling met de hond, ritje Leiden voor Annie Sloanverf en de LTC voor garen en helaas uitverkochte blauwe verdwijnstiften, toen was het eind van de middag. Omdat onze manlieven alletwee niet thuis waren hadden we alle tijd, prachtig weer, dus een boottochtje over de Kaag...flesje mee. Prachtig water, geen wind, En een joekel bij de scheepswerf, voor een Rus of Arabier meestal. Na het avondeten, waar ook kind drie en een vriendje aanschoven, heb ik haar uitgezwaaid voor de lange rit terug. Toch nog een steekje aan Drayton Hall, ik heb een nieuw project in mijn hoofd, dus deze moet echt af! Nog één zijkant te gaan. Maar vandaag staat in het teken van DE jurk voor Prinsjesdag, hij is geknipt en wel, dus na de kamerronde achter het masjien!

One of my goals for this year was to use up all the precut collections I've got hanging around in my studio. While I like them in concept I find them really hard to work with. Still I couldn't resist this Boat House collection by Sweetwater and when I stumbled across this Sloops pattern on Pinterest I knew it was meant to be. While this pattern is layer cake friendly the instructions are not. There are also no cutting instructions included for the blocks. I'm really glad I took the time to make a test block to verify my cutting plan before I started chopping up my layer cake. Here are my suggestions if you decide to make this quilt for yourself. From your background fabric cut 39 of the following: Piece 3 - 6 1/2" x 5 1/2" Piece 5 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Piece 8 - 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" Pieces 10 & 11 - 4" x 2 1/2" (for a total of 78) From you layer cake cut 39 of the following: (I did these in stacks of 5) Piece 9 - 2 3/4" x 10" Piece 6 - 7 1/4" x 1" Piece 7 - 7 1/4" x 4 1/2" For your first block you will also need to cut 1: Piece 1 - 3" x 2" from print Piece 4 - 5 1/2" x 3" from a different print Piece 2- 2 1/2" x 4" from background You don't need to cut all 39 of these pieces because you will be able to use trimmings from your blocks for these pieces. When you trim after adding piece 5 you will be left with a triangle that is perfect for future flags. Also, the piece remaining after you trim piece 8 is exactly the right size for another smaller flag 4. Finally, when you trim your final block you will be left with background triangles that will fit in piece 2. I do find pieces 2 and 3 to be the most awkward to sew. Once you get past those the block is a breeze. I have to admit I'm not usually a fan of the revolving rotary mat but for squaring up these blocks it's a life saver! I'm making progress but the depressing thing about paper piecing is once you've done a few you have a pretty good idea how long it takes to make each block. These average about 30 minutes a piece so I'm looking at 15 more hours of sailboat construction. I see a movie marathon in my future:-) Better late than never, linking up with this week's W.i.P. This variation of the Pinwheel Star block uses flying geese, half square triangles and squares to create a center star with partial stars around it. While it has a lot of pieces, it's easier to sew together than the traditional block.
Over the past few weeks I've had the chance to sew with a new fabric line from Penny Rose fabrics, called Faded Memories. It's designed by Gerri Robinson (Planted Seed Designs). The line has a mix of pretty, deep reds and blues (see all of the prints here). For my project I wanted to keep things simple - and classic. So I chose to use just a few of the blue prints from the line, and what's more classic than a good ol' Irish Chain quilt? The navy in this line is such a great navy color - it's not a black-navy, and not a purple-navy. It's just...navy! And the lighter blue color is lovely - almost a cornflower blue. See that blue floral border print? I chose it because it reminded me of the pretty blue and white pottery (like this) that my mother-in-law used to have displayed in her home years ago. Irish Chain quilts usually look more complicated than they actually are, and this quilt is no exception. Strip piecing makes quick work of the nine-patch blocks: You can make all of the nine patches from one print like I did here, or you could make it scrappy like in this red & white version. Early, early Wednesday morning, I'll be boarding a plane for Brigham City, UT, to spend time with lots of wonderful quilters while giving a lecture and three workshops for the Village Dry Goods quilt shop. This is one of my most favorite things to do...I love it. The quilt above is a new design called Settler's Puzzle, and I'll be teaching it for the first time. I love this quilt and it seems to be very popular with all of you as well. I'll be teaching this quilt in workshops all this year, and so it won't be available for purchase on my website until the end of the year. The only way to get the pattern is to join me in a workshop! There will be several opportunities spread out all over the country throughout the year, so stay tuned for more news about that. Adding tons of loveliness to this quilt is the talent from quilter extraordinaire, Linda Hrcka of The Quilted Pineapple. I just have to show you the creativity in stitching Linda did on my Settler's Puzzle quilt. The following photos were taken by Linda, and I'll let her work speak for itself. Timna Tarr comes from a long line of quilters but did not begin quilting until after studying art history in college. Let's get right down to it -- individual quilts from the Artistry of Quilts exhibit at the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, WA. I gave a little overview in the last post, and here are some details. I'm sorry the photo quality isn't that great, but we couldn't use flashes. My advice is to see them in person, and you have until Dec. 4. See the museum's web site here -- http://www.harborhistorymuseum.org/ -- for directions, hours, etc. "Yesterday," by Ruth Newell Reilly. The show has everything from antique to traditional to contemporary art quilts. Above is a superb tumbling block quilt by Ruth Newell Reilly with 936 different fabrics. (She works at the local quilt shop, which might explain her access to that much fabric.) "Louise," by Ruth Newell Reilly. Here's a different style of quilt by Ruth. "Louise" is colored with crayons and embellished with hand embroidery, like we did with our guild's raffle quilt shown in the last post. Detail of "Louise" "Christmas in WaCAMONGA," by Carol Arnold. Here is an example of beautiful applique and hand quilting by Carol Arnold, who started the Comfort Quilt Project that I've blogged about often. I thought WaCAMONGA was an exotic real location, but Carol said it's a name she made up using Washington and California. Look at all those circles and movement! Antique crazy quilt, "Signs of the Times," circa 1880s. Here is a more complex type of embroidered quilt, above. It's an antique crazy quilt with a dazzling variety of embroidered stitches between the crazy patches. The quilt is one of Janet Larson's many antique quilts that are on display in the exhibit. "Crazy Safari," by Janet Larson. Janet Larson is one of our queens of crazy quilting, and you can tell why from the detail of her hand embroidery on this African inspired crazy quilt. Detail of "Crazy Safari" There is a large display of African inspired quilts and authentic African art in the show, including this: The sculptures seem right at home next to Peter Gaunce's quilt, "African Beauty." Detail of "African Beauty," by Peter Gaunce. "African Eye Dance," by Pat Rosenthal. I couldn't get a closeup of the quilt above because it was hung so high, but it vibrates with energy. You can almost feel the African drum beats when you stand below it. It's by Pat of the red sofa art quilt. "Summer's Sudden Shower," by Delaine Gately. The quilt above is a dazzling example of Delaine Gately's art. She's known for her shimmery, sparkly, embellished quilts and wearable art. I thought I had a closeup of this, but I don't. You'll have to see it in person. Detail of "Finding Fishy," by Andrea Van Outryve. I had the opposite problem with "Finding Fishy," above. I have a great closeup but somehow missed getting a photo of the entire quilt. Again, you'd better get down there in person. It's a really fun, beautifully colored quilt that caught the attention of all of my friends who I took to the show. "Organza Four Patch," by Sherrie Spangler. Here are two of my contemporary abstract art quilts, above and below. These are made with sheer white silk organza that I painted and layered to create shifting colors. "Organza Four Patch" is a takeoff on the traditional "four patch" quilt block, which is a simple square patch made with four smaller squares. "Searching" also has some painted cotton and metallic fabrics. They're both machine quilted, as opposed to many of the other quilts shown that were hand quilted or embroidered. I hope this little taste of the exhibit will entice you to come down to the harbor and see the entire show in person. It's not huge, but it's well done. The museum and other organizers did an excellent job of giving viewers plenty of information about each quilt, as well as a good understanding about the art of quilting in general.
