So.. don't laugh.. last night I woke up at 1:45 AM with this ostinato (#1 and #2) running through my head! We had just tried a few new Elf on the Shelf things with our daughter... we love our elf, Eeewee! Most of my students have an elf and so this will be fun to try with them! I couldn't get it out of my head so had to get up out of bed (now 2 AM!!!) and write it down; well, once I'd done that I couldn't leave it alone so had to write a little poem to go with it for an "A" section and a third ostinati. So many possibilities to play with; write a little BAG melody for recorder students to play the A section instead of speaking it; review sixteenth and eighth note patterns, play on boomwhackers, develop pentatonic melody in C and accompany with Boomwhackers; play ostinato on Orff instruments in small groups set up in C pentatonic, improvise melody using rhythm of A section, use C, E, and G for ostinato parts 1, 2, and 3, etc. As you can see, once you get going the possibilities are loaded! Have fun!
People often call me creative, but they are very wrong. I am not creative. But I can copy and tweak like nobody's business!! I suppose that is where the engineering part of me comes into play. Generating that initial idea will keep me paralyzed. But
Whether you are looking for funny or naughty elf ideas, there are plenty quick and easy elf on the shelf ideas for kids to choose from.
Elf On The Shelf – the “Christmas Tradition” that has parents up and down the country saying “Oh sh*t, what are we going to do ... Read More
This is my first time linking up with Farley over at Oh Boy 4th Grade for her December Currently. Such a cute idea! I love stalking and seeing what everybody is up to. I know, it's a Saturday night and I'm home on my computer.... such is my life! The last two Saturdays have been busy with Christmas parties and dinners, so I am HAPPY to be home this Saturday! Well, here it goes: That's me in a nut shell tonight! Here's a few more Christmas activities we have been up to this week. We did a little four-square writing activity. Click the picture to download the rough copy page. {Download US spelling version here.} For a good copy, I used 11 x 11" white squares and we glue on 1" strips of red and green for ribbons and a bow to top it off! **Blogger Tip** If you ever have that annoying problem where you can't get your photos to rotate properly, try saving them as a PNG file. That worked for me! On Friday, I had planned a morning of Christmas ornament making. I wanted to have seven rotations set up with a volunteer at each station, but I had a lack of volunteer interest at this time of year, so I ended up having three stations. At the first station, we made three foam crafts (kits from Michaels craft store): Gingerbread Boys/Girls, Snowflakes, and Wreaths. At the second station we made candy cane reindeer (I found brown gingerbread-flavoured candy canes at Walmart... perfect!) and beaded candy canes. Finally, at the third station we made popsicle stick Christmas trees and snowmen. *Helpful Hint* Instead of trying to write their name on each ornament, I had students write their name on a piece of scrap paper/newspaper and students just placed each ornament on their paper. It worked out very nicely! I had a collection of used/cheap Christmas baggies, so we will package up all of our ornaments in a bag with some tissue paper, and voila! A wonderful Christmas present for parents! Speaking of Christmas presents... these are just a little something I whipped up for my EA's and teammates. Super cute! You can download the tags from Crafts reDesigned here. I will leave you tonight with a few more pictures of Elfy! He always puts a smile on my face! :) Happy Holidays, everyone!

4 days 12 hours 22 mins 21 seconds. You can see how excited Santa is about this on Lily's countdown to Christmas clock. He's fairly bursting from his snowy chimney. Santa is completely and totally ready for Christmas. There have been times during the past few weeks when I felt a smidge like the deliriously happy Santa- but mostly I feel more like "Elfy" our kinda creepy little Elf on a Shelf. Here he is posing on our kitchen clock. Elfy spent his first couple of weeks in December lamely shuffling between a couple high ledges around the kitchen. Now that Anna is home he has turned into adventure elf and doesn't mind taking a few scotch tape risks.

This week we are "traveling" to different countries to learn about the different holidays, customs, and traditions celebrated throughout the world. I love this unit and I have taught this every year I have taught. This year I found this wonderful unit on TPT called Holidays Around the World and I am using some ideas from there! Unfortunately though with our Holiday Program coming up on Monday and these sweet little kinders who have never been on risers before, I haven't had as much time to focus on this unit. We have spent a lot of time practicing how to safely get on and off the risers as well as time practicing our songs. For our program, the teachers "decorate" the gym by hanging up student art work. Of course, I am using my Elf Yourself Craftivity. I can't believe the response it has received not only by the staff members, but also the students. Everyone just loves them! I can't wait for the parents to see them too! Here is a sneak peak at a few of them! If you are interested in this craftivity project, please click on the image below to go to my TPT store. Our Elf on the Shelf, Elfie, has been helping with classroom behavior. We have computer lab towards the end of the day so during computer lab each day he leaves us a note to let us know if we will be on the naughty or nice list for that day. If we are on the nice list, he leaves us a special treat (Hershey's kisses). Here are some pictures of where he has been hiding! He brought us a new book one day. That Elfie is awfully generous!!! Hanging on the plant hook. The kids went bananas for this! Oh no, Elfie got out the legos while we were gone! Elfie likes the art center. He stuffed himself into the cup so no one could put a clip on the cup to go to that center today. On a side note, I have had a TON of tattling lately. One day I told the kids that they could no longer tattle to me. I mean we have been working on the difference between a tattle and a "tell" since the beginning of the year. Instead, now they have to tattle to Elfie. If they want to tattle on someone, go right ahead, but don't tell Mrs. Pauley go tell Elfie. It has been WONDERFUL! I love it. Granted, we spent a lot of time talking about when it was o.k. to talk to Elfie and when it wasn't, but I am loving this. I am thinking about getting a "tattling turtle" or something along those lines for after Christmas. What do you do in your room for tattling? Do you have something that works really well? I would love to hear about it!
