I wasn't planning on posting today, but I had a request to share an ornament that I was planning on making with my kids this week. I really love the Elf Yourself ornament idea that I found on this site Art With Ms. Chido She has some really cute art ideas and lots of pictures!! There was no template for making these so I decided just to make my own. Nothing fancy, but it helps to have it all done already. I plan to trace out onto different colored paper and letting the kids take what they want to make their own. You can grab this in my TpT Store by just clicking on the link or the picture. I plan on giving them a few buttons and beads to embellish a bit. I think they will love making them. Hope you enjoy it!!
Holiday season be busy, right? We all trying to juggle decorating, gift shopping, and wrapping. Thing is, making stuff look festive takes time and sometimes, creativity juice running low.

"First, I traveled through the seven levels of the Candy Cane Forest..." I loved this holiday-themed assignment I created a few years ago for my students to practice finding the slope of a line. But then the district changed the sequencing of our curriculum and I wasn't teaching slope until third quarter. This year we were wrapping up the Pythagorean Theorem just before winter break and I realized that I could modify this old slope assignment to practice using the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances on a coordinate plane. I think I even like this version better! I am sharing a few versions of this assignment. 1. Slope Assignment Version A asks students to plot points given the coordinates for each location on Buddy's journey. You have the option of giving students cardinal directions or ordered pairs to plot the points. Students then find the slope of each part of the journey. Version A - cardinal directions Version A - ordered pairs Versions A and B slope calculation chart Version B allows students to plot points for each location wherever they want. Students record the coordinates for each point and then find the slope for each part of the journey. Version B - student-designed route 2. Pythagorean Theorem/Distance Formula Assignment Version A asks students to plot points given the coordinates for each location on Buddy's journey. You have the option of giving students cardinal directions or ordered pairs to plot the points. Students then create right triangles and use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distances for each part of Buddy's journey (or you may choose to forgo the right triangles and have students use the distance formula). Pythagorean Theorem version Distance Formula version Version B allows students to plot points for each location wherever they want. Students record the coordinates for each point and then create right triangles and use the Pythagorean Theorem (or distance formula) to find the distances for each part of Buddy's journey. Which version should I use? Use Version A if you'd like all students to do the exact same assignment - same calculations, same answers, meaning that you can create an answer key. Version A Use Version B if you'd like students to have a bit more creative control, as they decide where to plot the locations of each stop on Buddy's journey. Grading this version will definitely take more time, and you'll want to instruct students not to plot all their points on the same horizontal/vertical line. Aloha friends and welcome to our Second Grade End of The Year Blog Hop!! I hope you are enjoying all of our fun ideas! To keep with my general tropical theme I am ending the year with a Hawaiian style memory book and a luau in my classroom. This is a freebie in my TpT store. These are all bound and ready to go. We will be picking through lots of pictures I have taken over the year. I keep all of my pictures on file in my Costco Photo account. I can print out exactly what I need and they only charge $0.13 a picture. Don't forget to take a picture with all of your students so they can add that as well. Our end of the year luau is really simple. We are going to wear aloha attire -Hawaiian print shirts and dresses. I tell the girls to wear a flower in their hair and they can wear sunglasses if they want. I plan to have a potluck lunch with local style food. These are called musubis and kids love them! Its spam or hotdogs over sticky rice wrapped in seaweed. I use the empty spam container as a mold for the rice. Fill it about halfway with rice and then pop it out. Just cut up the spam, cook it until both sides are browned, and place it over the rice. Drizzle a bit of soy sauce over it. Cut a strip of nori and wrap it around the whole thing. They are super easy to make and I know they will get eaten. Click {HERE} for recipe. We will also be having... Pineapple Haupia Pudding Click {HERE} for recipe And of course... At the end of our party/day I plan to give every child a lei. I love flower leis and they are given for so many occasions, especially graduation, but kids don't love them all that much. They prefer candy leis! Here in Hawaii all of these items can be found at Walmart, but I'm not so sure that you can find these on the mainland. These are packs of plastic netting to make the leis. Click {HERE} to order. One pack makes about 4 leis. I also picked up a big bag of candy, and I had this silver ribbon at home. The netting is like a thin tube that you can place the candy in. Each lei should be about 36 inches long. I place a little toy/eraser in the middle and then add the candy. Cut small pieces of ribbon and tie it between each piece of candy. Connect the top with a piece of ribbon and you are done! You could use toys, erasers, small boxes of crayons or any small item. It doesn't have to be candy. If you don't want to order the netting or you can't find it, you could use cellophane. Here is a tutorial I found from party city. Click {HERE} I will also be attaching these cute tags to each one. Click on the picture if you would like to use them. They are in a powerpoint file and can be edited to add your own name. I hope this gave you some ideas for your End of The Year activities or celebrations. Make sure you keep hopping for more great ideas!
Every writing activity we do has to align with the Common Core and I want my Christmas writing to be no different. Last year, I saw the cutest Elf Application, printed it and USED IT as my example for my students. Which means I didn't have a black line. So, I made my own {the Common Core part is the opinion...why would you make a good elf}: Long story short...I remade it because I couldn't find it. Low and behold, I FOUND IT ON PINTEREST!!! It was originally made by the lovely Cara at The First Grade Parade. So, thanks Cara, for the wonderful idea and inspiration!! Here's my bulletin board! :) I included the letters that I used with DJ Inkers fonts and Pixel Papers background. Download here
