Materials: Big Kid's Choice Brushes Crayola tempera paint pencils rulers Sharpies Crayola Oil Pastels Sax 90lb paper Sax 80lb paper Day 1: Talk about value, and paint their background. I demonstrated how they need to slowly add the white to each section. (we did this with a separate white and a q-tip). I did the last section with mostly white and a little color. I made a video of me demonstrating this. (I need to work on my video skills, i know! Haha) Only a few finished this in time to start on their buildings. Day 2: Work on buildings! I continually stress that they need to use a ruler! I tell them, even I need to use a ruler, and I draw every day! Painted Paper has a great handout, that I printed out and put on their tables for inspiration. After they traced their buildings with Sharpie, they could use the same color oil pastel, as their background, and add a shadow to one side of the buildings. 4th Grade Shaded Forms 4th grade has been learning about the elements of art, FORM & VALUE. Form is a three-dimensional geometrical figure (like a sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc.), as opposed to a shape, which is two-dimensional, or flat. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. (this project was inspired by an awesome image i found on Marnie Hyland's blog! Check out their awesome art!) Day 1: I demonstrated how to do the project. (I project all of my lessons on a giant screen, so everyone can see.) We talked about value and how to make a basic shape look 3-d. We talked about light sources, and shadows, and I demonstrated how to shade and add highlights to their shapes with chalk pastels. We used chalk for the black and oil pastels for the white. After my demo was over, the students chose their colors for their papers, we passed out the shape tracers, and the students got to work! Day 2: The students continued to add value to their shapes, and assembled their backgrounds. The background consists of one piece of 12 x 18" construction paper, and one piece of 4.5 x 12". After they finished shading and adding highlights, the cut out the pieces and assembled them to their background. After they glued on their "sculpture" they were supposed to shade the "table" underneath the shapes. (This project took at least 3 45 minute classes to complete.)

Today, 2nd grade embarked on a new project! New to me and certainly new to them! I saw this awesome idea on Abby Schukei's blog, Art, Eat, Tie Dye, Repeat and decided to give it a go! Here's how we created ours! Materials: 90lb 6x18" paper 6x18" Tru Ray construction paper Crayola oil pastels Fiskar scissors Pencils Big Kid's Choice flat paintbrushes Crayola Artista II tempera paint Day 1: Talk about the Element of Art, VALUE! Value is super duper important, y'all! Value is the lights and darks of a color. We use value to shade things, and to make our pictures just look more AWESOME! ;) I like to say, Value adds $Value$! Need another example of Value...how about the ever popular Ombre craze? It's everywhere! You can have ombre from head to toe if you wanted! Well, we're making ombre ice cream! lol Today, we're focusing on the lights or the TINTS. I tell them, not like the tent you sleep in! A TINT is when you add white to a color. (A shade is when you add black to a color, but we're not doing that) I gather them around my middle table in my room and show them how to paint a 6x18" piece of paper. I start with my plain color, and slowly add dollops of white to make the color get lighter and lighter! I remind them to paint in one direction to make the color smoother too. After I paint my long paper, I show them how to paint their cone paper. I used oil pastels to make crisscrossing diagonal lines. (peach and brown from Crayola's oil pastels) Then, they got to work! Here's Mrs. Fitch's class, hard at work, making their Tints & cones! Day 2: I'll get them to trace an ice cream template on the back of their paper, cut them out, and assemble them on a complementary color of their ice cream! Mrs. Fitch's class doing a great job! Like the Value Landscapes posted earlier this month, this lesson was inspired by Miriam at Arteascuola. However, these were "painted" with pixels on the computer rather than regular paintbrushes. Each year 4 student completed their own landscape in less than 10 minutes but still had valuable experience with using tone to create depth within a two dimensional artwork. After we observed and discussed the scenes created by Miriam's students the children took turns at making their own value landscape on the two available classroom computers while the rest of the class continued on with their set work. It was quick and easy but also meaningful for the children.

My husband is runs his own painting company so he spends a lot of time at our local Diamond Vogel store. At the end of last school year Diane (from the paint store) gave him a LARGE BOX of discontinued color paint samples. I started thinking about what to do... value scales for sure. sorting by color game? perfect cartoon squares? bulletin board borders? What I came up for the first round (yes there was that many) are these value scale cities. As students finished an assignment they choose 5 paint samples and started drawing their city information on them. I didn't even tell them what we were going to do until the next week. The next week we started class talking about value. In every class but one, a student blurted out "were those papers we drew on last week a value scale?" Yes! Yes, they were. The students were also given the challenge of creating a changing value background. That means their sky area needed to go from light to dark or dark to light.
