Last week, 5th grade embarked on an EPIC project, that I've never tried before, but ever since I saw it on the SmART Class blog, I'v wanted to try it! Here's an example from their website! Btw, there's also a great tutorial on Art Room Britt's blog too! Here's how we started ours! Day 1: The kids can choose between a dog, cat, and bird of prey. We started on the eyes nose first. When I taught the first classs, I let them draw the eyes and noses themselves, but it was taking FOREVER, and they were a little too small. For the next class, I made a few tracers for the eyes, and nose, and that went much smoother! We drew them with pencil, traced them with black Jack Richeson Semi Moist paint, and then the next class filled in the irises with Crayola 28 pack oil pastels. They're off to a great start! Mrs. Kilby's class is knocking it out of the park!! Mrs. Kilby's class is almost done! Way to go my awesome artists!! Here are some great examples from Mrs. Ross'class! I have one week left in my Photoshop for Quilters online class. I thought I would share another PSE technique with you: The point of this lesson was to take an image and edit it so that you could print out a pattern to create an applique quilt. I chose a favorite image of my niece, Lilly: Original Image Image changed to black and white with levels adjustment Image deepened with Hue and Saturation adjustment Image has been posterized Then we were taught to soften the edges of the posterized version so that this could be printed out and used as a pattern to create a portrait quilt. These softened edges would be easier to cut out of fabric. If you look at the version above this one, you can see how much more detail there is in her hair that I removed. After the quilt top is completed, I could go back in and add that hair detail back in with machine quilting. How cool is that! Make this delightful painted collage art using a really fun painted paper process. You will love making this as much as your kids do!
This week, 3rd grade started their Henri Rousseau & Cassie Stephens inspired tigers! Here's Mr. Rousseau's painting we're getting inspiration from! Tiger in a Tropical Storm Here's how we created ours! My first two 3rd grade classes painted a couple of sheets of orange painted paper, and then the rest of the classes were able to draw their tigers, and make some green painted paper for the rest of the project! We're going to be making a collage on blue or black paper, by creating these tigers on the orange paper, and leaves on the green paper. We'll also add a tail, so it looks like the tiger is peeking out of the leaves! Can't wait to see the finished results! Here they are painting paper! I love all the different types of texture they added! Mrs. Stephens has a great video on youtube, showing you exactly how to draw the tiger, and she talks about the elements of art used in this project! Here's the link Cassie Stephen's How to draw a tiger Mrs. Fambrough's class is doing a fabulous job!! Stay tuned for some awesome art!

Reggie Laurent: Contemporary Artist Reggie Laurent is a self-taught artist living in Georgia. He creates very intricate abstract shape paintings. I saw his paintings online and I was immediately drawn to all of the fun patterns and colors. My first graders learned about his abstract pictures. They are filled with lots of different shapes, fitted together like a puzzle. His artworks are highly detailed and very colorful. The kids and I loved doing this project. First of all, I love combining collage with painting and drawing, and I love big bustling cities. Secondly, this project was an opportunity for my students to visually communicate where they, or their families, comes from. Always big points for personalizing art. The New York artist, Elizabeth Rosen, was the inspired for this project. See her work here. Elizabeth Rosen Objectives were: creating a layered cityscape using various collage and book papers; overlapping buildings; variety in text, color and shape; balance and harmony; perspective (smaller and higher in back, bigger and lower at bottom); and creating depth with charcoal sticks, which we smudged with our fingers. We added personalized symbols which represent our home city of choice. We began by painting our sky in an opaque color. We only painted half way down, because we knew that our collage papers would cover the bottom up to middle portion (saving on time and paint is always good!) We then cut out various collage papers in simplified building shapes and were mindful of varying our shapes and sizes of our building, as well as choosing papers with different fonts, coloration and design, so as to achieve a well balanced and dynamic cityscape. We arranged and then glued, starting at the back of the city and moving down, so that those in front overlap those in back. We then drew symbols, signs or other indicators of the city we were representing (a shopping mall in Dubai, the City Hall in Zagreb, building top water tanks, yellow cabs and a bagel shop in New York, a church and clocktower in Prague are a few examples the kids came up with the identify their city). We cut these out and pasted them on our buildings. Lastly, we used soft vine charcoal to run a black line along the edge of all our buildings, and then smudged lightly with our fingers. This gives immediate and stunning depth and 3-dimension to our city. Represented in the below collages are Berlin, Prague, Milano, NYC, Minneapolis, and an invented city. Kids 7-9. Kids 7-9 Represent in the below collages are Dubai, Budapest, New York, an imaginary city, Zagreb and a Chinese city. Kids 7-11

This week, 4th will be starting their background for the Collagraph printmaking project! This was inspired by the fabulous @Mrsdow_Artroom! Give her a follow on Instagram! After they finish their background, they'll start gluing the foam shapes onto their square printing plate. Videos and how to below! Materials: Speedball ink Brayer 90 lb paper Wonderfoam shapes school smart fluorescent paint Big Kid's Choice paintbrushes Elmer's Glue-all This background was done with School Smart Washable Fluorescent Paint Here's a short time lapse video on how to paint your background! These backgrounds were done with Sax Liquid Watercolors (SIDE NOTE: REGULAR FOAM DOESN'T WORK FOR THIS PROJECT! IT FALLS OFF!) ALSO: Make sure you start in the corner of your square and work your way out! Make both sides match or be symmetrical! Like this one! Here's a little time lapse of me creating another printing plate MAKE SURE YOU USE A DIFFERENT KIND OF FOAM, LIKE THESE WONDERFOAM SHAPES!! or these Darice sticky foam sheets would work well too! & no glue needed! Here's a time lapse of me gluing the shapes on. Start in one corner and work your way out, making sure both sides match, or are symmetrical! Then, you're ready to ink up and start printing! Make sure you keep your corner design in the middle of your paper as you're rotating! Make a mark on the corner that you want to put in the middle, so you can see it when you're printing! Here's Dr Fambrough's class doing a great job! Here are some awesome artists from Mrs. McAllister's class!! I was literally shrieking for joy at the way these turned out! Mrs. Stacey is so proud of y'all!!! <3 Here are some prints from Mrs. Fambrough's class!
