This week, 3rd grade started their Henri Rousseau & Cassie Stephens inspired tigers! Here's Mr. Rousseau's painting we're getting inspiration from! Tiger in a Tropical Storm Here's how we created ours! My first two 3rd grade classes painted a couple of sheets of orange painted paper, and then the rest of the classes were able to draw their tigers, and make some green painted paper for the rest of the project! We're going to be making a collage on blue or black paper, by creating these tigers on the orange paper, and leaves on the green paper. We'll also add a tail, so it looks like the tiger is peeking out of the leaves! Can't wait to see the finished results! Here they are painting paper! I love all the different types of texture they added! Mrs. Stephens has a great video on youtube, showing you exactly how to draw the tiger, and she talks about the elements of art used in this project! Here's the link Cassie Stephen's How to draw a tiger Mrs. Fambrough's class is doing a fabulous job!! Stay tuned for some awesome art!
Hi! I’m here today to share with you a meaningful art project for your younger students. This would be good as as a “getting to know you” activity. The following examples were all made by kindergartners near the end of the year, but I would think this lesson would be suitable for kids through grades 2. Many art teachers have taught about the artist Faith Ringgold and had their students create paper quilts. I have a free printable for you … Read more... →
A couple of art classes ago, 5th grade started their Jim Dine and Lauralee Chambers inspired paintbrushes! They covered many art practices with this project, and I'm very proud of their results! Here's how we created them! Materials: Pencils 60lb Sax drawing paper Sharpie markers Crayola Artista II watercolors Big Kid's Choice paintbrushes charcoal pencils Day 1: Talk about Jim Dine, and show examples of his and other students' work. Then, I lead them in a directed drawing of how to draw different paintbrushes. After we drew them, we traced them with Sharpie Markers. Here's a how to video here! Day 2: They finished tracing and started shading their paintbrushes. After they completed shading, they added the paint and paint splatters! Here's a time lapse video of me shading my paintbrushes. I used a soft charcoal pencil for the shading. Here's a video of me adding paint to my paintbrushes! Mrs. Kilby's class did a great job!! Here's some awesome art from Mrs. Rogers' class! Since I'm still on a cart, I let them paint outside so we didn't make a mess in their classroom! These crayon cuties were created a couple of weeks ago, by Kindergarten! I found the idea on Instagram, from @artfunwithms.c. Here's how we created them! Materials: 4.5" x 12" 90 lb paper Crayola Artista II watercolors Big Kid's choice paintbruses Tru-ray construction paper glue sticks Sharpies Day 1: I demonstrate how to paint their paper. We don't want to mix a whole bunch of colors together, and make a puke crayon!! EEEWWWWwwwww they all say 😆 I tell them, you can choose colors in the same family, but don't mix cool colors with warm colors! After I go through my demo I give them their paper to get started. While they're painting, we read The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Daywalt. Day 2: We glue black strips to the top and bottom, and use them for arms and legs. I give them circles to glue on for their eyes, and they draw the face with a Sharpie marker. I love all the different expressions that they create! We hung ALL of them up for Night of the Arts, and they looked sooooo cute!! DISCLOSURE: LINKS TO PRODUCTS ARE AFFILIATE LINKS, WHICH MEANS I GET A SMALL COMPENSATION FOR SALES. This week, kindergarten continued their exploration of line, and started these fun line paintings! We used a new medium, to them, oil pastels and tempera cakes. 😄 Here's how we did it! Materials: Sax 90lb paper Crayola Oil Pastels Jack Richeson Semi-Moist tempera cakes First, we reviewed the different types of lines. Then, I showed them how to draw the lines from side to side of their (vertical) paper. I also talked about how you need to make the lines dark with the oil pastels, or they won't show up as well, when you paint. After that, I went over each color with the tempera cakes paint. I used rainbow colors, but told them they could use different colors if they liked. Many of them have not ever painted before, so we discussed how to hold a paint brush on the grip part of the handle, and to not get on the metal part of the brush. (As Cassie Stephens says, "the DANGER ZONE!") We go over the process of DIP, WIPE, and SWIRL, in the tempera cakes. We dip it in the water, wipe it on the rim of the cup, and swirl our brushes gently in the paint. We wanted our paint to go side to side as well, and try to stay in the lines we created. Here's some great artists from Mrs. Garcia's kindergarten class! Stay tuned for more awesome art! After the kids get done painting, we're going to use shapes (another element of art) to turn them into monsters! inspired by Georgetown Elementary's blog! I'll get them to draw the monster shape, on the back, with me Then, we'll draw the shapes out on black and white paper. If they want to go a step further, they can add accessories! Ms. Placha's class has some super cut and scary monsters!! Great job Mrs. Garcia's class! Here's some scary cute little monsters from Mrs. C. Campbell's class! Here's some super spooky, and precious monsters from Mr. Gonzalez' class! Here's Mrs. Kerr's adorable little monsters! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”
Earlier this year, my co-worker Jayne found the idea to make a collaborative school-wide paper mural based on the artwork of Thank YouX. The idea for a student mural originally came from Jenell Novello and you can see the lesson plan write-up on Artsonia. She also so generously provided the lesson plan and templates on Google docs. Thank You X got his name by accident. In 2009 Andy Warhol’s spray painted portrait was spotted on a city street in L.A.. … Read more... →

Y'all....I'm so proud of these 5th graders! They're my first class of the day, and have been a joy to have in the morning. These past few weeks, we've been working on a project that I haven't tried in a few years, but I'm glad we visited it again! Thanks for the idea Mrs. Rogers! The students take their name, or name of choice, write it once and trace it 7 more times to create this neat and unique work of art! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Pencils Sharpies Crayola Markers or colored pencils 9x9" 50 or 60lb paper Day 1: I show examples of other 5th graders' work, and then I demonstrate how to make block and bubble letters. I used the leftover scraps from cutting their squares for them to practice making block letters on. After we practice, we fold our paper in half 4 times, and write our name in one of the triangle sections of the paper, and trace with a Sharpie. I then fold my paper, and trace my name on the next triangle. I trace that with a Sharpie, and I continue tracing and folding my paper different ways, until I get back to the original name. Once I get all of that traced with a Sharpie, I'm ready to color! Color each section at a time, using the same color to unify that layer. Keep coloring until yours looks like these amazing artists! (This took 2 45 minute art classes to complete) Here are some great works in progress! DISCLOSURE: LINKS TO PRODUCTS ARE AFFILIATE LINKS, WHICH MEANS I GET A SMALL COMPENSATION FOR SALES. 4th Grade Shaded Forms 4th grade has been learning about the elements of art, FORM & VALUE. Form is a three-dimensional geometrical figure (like a sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc.), as opposed to a shape, which is two-dimensional, or flat. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. (this project was inspired by an awesome image i found on Marnie Hyland's blog! Check out their awesome art!) Day 1: I demonstrated how to do the project. (I project all of my lessons on a giant screen, so everyone can see.) We talked about value and how to make a basic shape look 3-d. We talked about light sources, and shadows, and I demonstrated how to shade and add highlights to their shapes with chalk pastels. We used chalk for the black and oil pastels for the white. After my demo was over, the students chose their colors for their papers, we passed out the shape tracers, and the students got to work! Day 2: The students continued to add value to their shapes, and assembled their backgrounds. The background consists of one piece of 12 x 18" construction paper, and one piece of 4.5 x 12". After they finished shading and adding highlights, the cut out the pieces and assembled them to their background. After they glued on their "sculpture" they were supposed to shade the "table" underneath the shapes. (This project took at least 3 45 minute classes to complete.)
