It records the payments made for the crosses that King Edward I had erected commemorating his dead wife, Eleanor of Castille (they mark the nightly resting places along the route taken when her body was transported to London). Queen Eleanor of Castile. Portrait by Joos Van Cleve, c.1530s-40s. Eleanor, the daughter of Philip of Burgundy and Juana of Castile and sister to Emperor Charles V, was the second wife of François I of France. Her marriage to François was part of peace negotiations between the Valois and the Habsburgs, although such peace was short term. Prior to her marriage to François, Eleanor was married to Manuel I of Portugal. Her only surviving child from the marriage was a daughter, Maria.

This book examines the emergence of the queen consort in medieval England, beginning with the pre-Conquest era and ending with death of Margaret of France, second wife of Edward I, in 1307. Though many of the figures in this volumes are well known, such as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Eleanor of Castille, the chapters here are unique in the equal consideration given to the tenures of the lesser known consorts, including: Adeliza of Louvain, second wife of Henry I; Margaret of France, wife of Henry the Young King; and even Isabella of Gloucester, the first wife of King John. These innovative and thematic biographies highlight the evolution of the office of the queen and the visible roles that consorts played, which were integral to the creation of the identity of early English monarchy. This volume and its companions reveal the changing nature of English consortship from the Norman Conquest to today.

She acted as regent twice during the reign of her son, Louis IX: during his minority from 1226 until 1234, and during his absence from 1248 until 1252. She was born in Palencia, Spain, in 1188, the third daughter of Alfonso VIII, King of Castile, and Eleanor of England, sister of King Richard I of England and King John of England.
