I totally forgot to tell you about this great item I made because I started making it over April Vacation stopped and didn't finish till the first days of summer. Labor of Love!!! I have found that many of my kiddos struggle with writing a claim because they just can't recognize one themselves. I created these task cards to help them. On each task card, students are given two to three pieces of evidence supporting one side of a contemporary debate. Using the evidence, students have to choose the best possible claim from three possibilities. This is great as a quick review, a launch to claims, or remediation for your struggling writers. Head on over and check it out!!!

One of my new Common Core ELA Units is called "Figure it Out." It is about notable people who overcame challenges to become successful in life. We read about Helen Keller, Leonardo da Vinci, George Washington Carver and Thomas Edison. We created lap-books using an Invention Brochure that I bought on TPT from This Little Piggy Reads. The printables fit nicely on the file folder. Here are some samples of my student's work. I made a sample but allowed my students to use their own creativity. It also fits in with our electricity unit. Click for Link

Likewise, for our students, annotating text can be equally as daunting, especially if they don’t have a process of their own that works or steps to follow. However, teaching text annotation can be a simple and straightforward task if you follow these five steps.

Are you often staring at your board wondering how to word your Learning Target and Success Criteria for your lesson? That was me! Save yourself some time with this 80-page download of Common Core Learning Targets AND corresponding Success Criteria for your middle school ELA classroom. These Learning Targets are appropriate for middle grades, specifically 6-8, but could easily be adapted for other grade levels. These Learning Targets and Success Criteria cover ALL Common Core Reading Anchor Standards. What are Learning Targets and Success Criteria? Learning Targets (also called Learning Intentions) and Success Criteria are quickly replacing the "Objectives" used to indicate learning goals to students. Here's their purpose: Learning Target: What will we learn? Rationale: Why should we learn it? Success Criteria: How will I know I am successful? Learning Targets are written in Common-Core aligned, yet student friendly language and include the rationale statement, while the Success Criteria are written using "I can..." statements. This download includes printable PDFs of each Learning Target with Success Criteria, but I have also included a document with all Learning Targets/Success Criteria in one easy location. This product is also EDITABLE. The download includes a link to an EDITABLE Google Slides presentation for classroom display and an EDITABLE Google Doc.
