Everyone loves these cats! This project is a simple introduction to using the grid method to draw. The cat is a simple drawing that sets students up for success. Younger children can follow a step-by-step drawing. Working small (6" x 9”) is an effective way to teach students to use colored pencils with beautiful results, and the lesson includes techniques for blending and layering. Creating a frame in metal tooling is an easy way to learn how to emboss, and it’s a pretty finish for the project. Of course, the frames are optional if you don't have the time or resources for metal tooling. This project's a great opportunity to tie in art history, social studies, and literature. Students learn about the role of cats in ancient Egypt. We take inspiration from a cat sculpture in the Egyptian collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as illustrations by Christina Balit in the beautiful book, Treasury of Egyptian Mythology: Classic Stories of Gods, Goddesses, Monsters, & Mortals from National Geographic Kids. Included are a gridded line drawing of a cat, a step-by-step drawing guide, a colored pencil warm-up sheet, a handout of Egyptian patterns for the metal tooling, and a detailed photo tutorial for all of the steps. Supplies needed: colored pencils, gold metallic colored pencils, and 6" x 9” black drawing paper. For the optional gold frames, we use gold-tone aluminum for tooling (38 gauge), optional rulers, and wooden styluses or dull pencils. The 18-page project includes: -Project Overview + Learning Objectives -Fun Facts About Cats in Ancient Egypt + Word Wall (with Definitions) -Information About the Cat Statue and Egyptian Ceiling Patterns -Recommended Books + Supplies -Photo Tutorial for Drawing -Colored Pencil Techniques -Creating the Frame in Metal Tooling -Student Gallery, Grades 5-6 -Reference Photo of Egyptian Patterns from The Met -Gridded Line Drawing of a Cat -How to Draw a Cat, Step-by-Step -Colored Pencil Warm-Up -Pattern Handout for Metal Tooling You can follow me on Instagram @ruthchapman.art Please tag me if you post about this project.
