Though I'm a long way from tackling an outfit from this wonderful era, it is hot and rainy today and I need a little inspiration. So off I go into cysperspace, circa 1910's ... Beaded Cotton Gauze Dress, c. 1914 - 1916. This was posted at the Past Perfect Vintage Blog. As I was searching for inspiration, I saw that this post from 2008, which happened to be posted on the day after a rainy day. Gowns of Queen Maud of Norway, c. 1910 - 1913. Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown on her wedding day, 1912. I found this photo and a brief bio of this wonderful woman on the Mulatto Diaries blog. Olga Nicolaevna Romanov, c. 1913. --> Tea Gown, c. 1910's from The Great Basin Costume Society blog. A 1912 Ball Gown also shown on The Great Basin Costume Society blog. Irene Castle in a Tea Gown, c. 1914. The Tunic Dress, c. 1912. You can see more photos and a detailed description of this dress at the FIDM Museum Blog. Actually, the Dreamstress is the perfect conclusion to my search for inspiration on a rainy day. If you love this era, you should check out the making of her Luna Moth Gown, inspired by this era. I hope you've enjoyed this little stroll into vintage wonderland. These are only a handful of the beautiful fashions from this era. I do feel inspired and have set a new goal for myself: To sew a gown inspired by this era to wear on New Year's Eve 2011. That gives me a little less than a year-and-a-half to develop the skills to make the gown and to develop enough socials skills to be invited to the kind of party where I can wear it. (hehehe) For now, it's time to back up my computer and do some house work. I'd love to see your inspiration photos or your sewing projects. Happy Sewing!
*DIGITAL PDF SEWING PATTERN--instant download* Make your own lacy turn-of-the-century underpinnings using historically inspired techniques! Edwardian Combinations Pattern in sizes 2-28. This listing includes 2 digital PDF patterns (one for sizes 2-14, one for sizes 16-28), written sewing instructions, printing and assembly instructions, instructions for adding lace applique, and detailed photos of the construction techniques used in my Edwardian Combinations. This is a pattern I have developed using drafting instructions from the early 20th century and further development from draping. Inspired by open-crotch combinations from the MET’s collection dated 1890-1900. Popular in the late Victorian era through the Edwardian period, "Combinations" were an evolution of the 2-part undergarments that came before, worn directly underneath the corset. This garment "combines" a camisole and drawers in to one effortless, streamlined look. This particular pair of combinations features a button front closure, split-crotch opening, and voluminous, ruffly bloomers. Both the bodice and drawers are gathered into the waistband, creating a classic Edwardian silhouette with a pigeon-chested look. With optimal opportunities to add lace, ribbons, and trims, these combinations make a lovely addition to a historical fashion lover's wardrobe, or an airy summer romper perfect for lounging. --Included in this digital package-- *SIX different files are included in this PDF package. 5 are available for immediate download, and one is available upon request if you plan on printing with a large-scale printer* 1. Size chart and printing guide 2. Pattern sizes 2-14: a 36 page PDF with registration marks and bleed for piecing the pages together, to be used with any small scale printer, printed at 100% scale. 3. Pattern sizes 16-28: a 54 page PDF with registration marks and bleed for piecing the pages together, to be used with any small scale printer, printed at 100% scale. 4. Sewing Guide including detailed, step-by-step instructions for sewing the garment, applying lace applique, and finishing the seams. 5. Visual Reference including detailed photographs of the original garment. *6. Full-scale size A0 pattern that can be printed at 100% scale with a large format printer in 2-3 continuous 33"x 46" sheets. This option is available by messaging me directly on Etsy after purchase! Unfortunately, Etsy has a limit on how many files I can include in the listing, this is why I must send them separately if you choose. This file will be emailed to you within 24-48 hours. --Sizing-- A detailed size chart is included in this listing, as well as in the digital downloads you will receive upon purchase. This pattern is designed to fit a wide range of body types and has a loose and flowy fit. The most important measurement to rely on is your waist measurement-- which is fitted to the body with a waistband. If you are between sizes, I recommend sizing up. Please feel free to contact me with any fit questions! Size Range: 24"-50" Waist (62 cm-127 cm) --Experience Level-- This pattern is best suited for an intermediate to advanced sewist who has experience reading and understanding patterns without visual instructions. --Notions Needed-- • Five 1/2” wide buttons • 4 - 6 yards of 7/8” wide ribbon • 2 - 3 yards of at least 45” wide woven cotton. It should be lightweight—choose one with the right transparency for you! For example, cotton lawn is beautiful but some lawn is quite transparent for undergarments that are meant to be seen. • 1/2 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing. • 1/4 yard of facing fabric—this could just be your Self fabric. It needs to be woven and very lightweight. • Thread suitable for buttonholes: silk, buttonhole twist, or polyester • Your favorite sewing thread PLUS, your chosen lace & frills! This is outlined in great detail in the instructions about how much you may need and different options for re-creating the piece from the MET. --Seam Allowance-- This pattern uses 1/2" seam allowance, which is INCLUDED in the pattern. Many of these seams must be finished by hand. Instructions for felling your seams are included. --Construction Notes-- This garment requires a significant amount of hand sewing in order to apply the lace and finish the seams on the interior of the garment. However, there are many opportunities to use your sewing machine instead, which will be outlined in the instructions. If you are new to hand sewing, have no fear! There are lots of resources and instructions included. Because the original design relies heavily on lace applique in specific widths, markings for adding lace applique are NOT indicated on the pattern. Instead, detailed instructions for adding lace applique & trimmings, a description of the specific lengths and widths of lace that I used, and external resources are provided. These methods are a "reductive" process, meaning that the lace is laid over top of the cut out pieces of fabric, basted on, stitched, and the fabric underneath is cut away. I encourage you to have fun and experiment with creating your own lace designs and frills! This pattern is a great blank slate for using materials to embellish as you please. This pattern has a SPLIT-CROTCH OPENING, which means that the drawers are completely open at the crotch seam from the center front waistband until about 5" below the back waistband. There is a generous overlap at the fly front and lots of fullness in the legs, so they are designed to stay put and provide coverage, while functioning underneath layers of petticoats. *Please do not replicate, share, or redistribute the pattern for any other use aside from your personal enjoyment. *Feel free to contact me with any questions about the process or pattern itself. Thanks for looking!
