Antarctic explorers Ernest Shackleton , Robert Falcon Scott (1868 1912 and Edward Wilson at the start of a sledging trip during the Discovery Expedition, circa 1903.
As the wife of Captain Scott’s colleague Edward Wilson, Oriana Wilson (1874–1945) witnessed the planning and tensions behind the 1912 Antarctic expedition at first hand. Following her husband’s death on the doomed mission, this determined woman found new purpose supporting troops during the First World War, became a distinguished naturalist, organized disaster relief after an earthquake in New Zealand, and was the first European woman to explore the rainforests of northern Australia.
Archivists have uncovered the last letter written by the closest comrade of Captain Scott (pictured) Sir Edward Wilson, before the crew died on the return from the South Pole.
The archive of 52 celluloid negatives, worth £50,000, show the great British adventurer and his men heading off in the snow-covered wilderness during the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition of 1912.
Edward Wilson of the Antarctic Naturalist and Friend by George Seaver, published I believe in 1939. The book is in good vintage condition considering its age, all the pages are in tact, however there is a lot of discolouration and browning on the spine and in the pages. There is one small pen mark on page 78 at the bottom of the page and 2 pages have a small sticky tape attached, pg 294 and 296. This is a very old book but no pages are missing.
New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust has discovered an almost perfectly preserved 118 year old watercolour painting among penguin-excrement, dust and mould covered papers found in an historic hut at Cape Adare, Antarctica.
Watercolour of a small bird was painted by Dr Edward Wilson, who died in 1912 with Captain Robert Scott on their return trip to the south pole

It’s as if the last occupants simply upped and ran, leaving their socks and their jumpers, their books and their coffee cups. The kitchen is still fully stocked.
