Nato a San Francisco nel 1875, Edward Alfred Cucuel è stato un pittore impressionista di genere , che ha spesso usato i suoi familiari per modelli. All'età di quattordici anni stava già frequentando il San Francisco Art Institute e facendo illustrazioni per The Examiner . All'età di diciassette anni, si è recato a Parigi, dove ha frequentato l' Académie Julian e l' Académie Colarossi , terminando all'Académie des Beaux-Arts con Jean-Léon Gérôme . Quando tornò negli Stati Uniti nel 1896, lavorò brevemente come illustratore di giornali a New York, ma tornò in Francia e in Italia per familiarizzare con gli antichi maestri in prima persona. Finì in Germania nel 1899, dove lavorò come illustratore di giornali indipendenti a Berlino e Lipsia.Il suo stile era generalmente impressionistico e i suoi soggetti preferiti erano scene all'aperto idilliache con giovani donne. Le sue opere possono essere viste al Chicago Art Institute , alla National Academy di New York e al Carnegie Institute di Pittsburgh, così come in molti altri posti negli Stati Uniti e in Europa.

Here Cucuel illustrates southern Manhattan from a vantage point on Governor’s Island. At right is Castle Williams, a circular fortification on the northwest point of the island and part of a system of forts constructed in the early 19th century to protect New York City from naval attack.
