With the 2012 elections coming up next school year I wanted to do some sort of worksheet to get my kids involved with the voting process. Now remember, most of my students can not write on their own without copying from a source. I try not to do all my worksheets with a lot of written answers. Some of my slower kids spend the whole period trying to keep up writing the answers that I feel like they miss the whole lesson. And, since they can't read what they wrote anyway I don't find it necessary to do all the time. Quite a few of my worksheets, even though they have places for answers, are never written on by the students. I write the answers on the board, and they participate.
Tired of using worksheets to teach map skills? I used worksheets for years but something didn't feel right. I knew my students weren't learning map skills deeply when I was teaching this way. That was when the Hands on Map Skills project was born! This is a social studies project that has cross-curricular connections to reading and math. In this project students use real maps to study their important features, all while refining their map skills. Then they get the chance to put all of this knowledge together as they create their own local map of a community, as well as a collaborative world map. All of my projects start out with several days of structured lessons where students acquire the knowledge needed to work on their own. This lessens anxiety when students aren't sure what to do, because they can look back at notes to see what they previously learned. The project is awesome for those students in your class who need a challenge, as the jobs for the collaborative map are differentiated in difficulty. Concepts covered in Social Studies: continents, oceans, countries, states/regions, local communities, urban, suburban, rural, transportation, geographical features (landforms), population, climate, equator, prime meridian, key, compass rose. Concepts covered in Math: rounding/estimation and division. Included in this resource: 1. Supply list (full list is in the preview) 2. All of my lessons and units are in the format of Jane Pollock’s GANAG method. This standards based lesson schema is for 21st century learners. This method is used to help teachers use a structure in their lessons that will give great results using formative assessment and feedback often. Hey friends. We are gearing up for Thanksgiving around our house tonight, but I thought I'd take a second to share with you some of the fun we've had in my first grade class! Teaching maps in the primary setting can be challenging. In my experience, it's a harder concept for the little gals and guys to grasp due to the lovely invention of the GPS. Kids just don't see real maps in use anymore. This year I tried a few new things to really give my lesson that balanced literacy tie. We have been learning about Maps for three.whole. weeks. There is only so much I feel like we can teach little firsties about maps haha! We started our unit with a Poem and interactive read aloud. Both of these have the vocabulary that our standards require firsties to know. I created this little packet that includes a poem, interactive read aloud, a booklet for shared reading, vocabulary cards, ABC order center, vocabulary printables, and interactive notebook pages. My kiddos really enjoyed the foldable booklet during shared reading. The booklet is written on a level that they could read. We read this book several times in several different ways. First, we used it for shared reading. Then, the students read it with a partner. Here's some other great read aloud for maps! (affiliate links) In math, we are practicing addition and subtraction centers. As a school, we are all working on our math fluency. My kids were not really into the whole flash card routine, so I had to think outside of the box to practice fluency. I created these little slider cards. The kids LOVED them. I have student a pull the "ladder" up and call out the facts to student b. You could do SO many things with this. I also laminated them and the kiddos used a wipe off marker to record their own answers. I also made a little "Lightning Math Center". The kiddos have to try and answer as many questions as FAST as they can using the sand timer. It's amazing what a sand timer does for group of first graders! The thing I love about this packet is it's super low prep! I printed everything on bright card stock, sent it for lamination and boom! It's done! I'm typically not a big fan of "task cards" in first grade. But this year I have a group that can handle them and needs something a little more challenging than what my curriculum currently calls for. I created a few little sets of task cards just for them! This CVC NO PREP and DIFFERENTIATED Word Work is very interactive for students as they study Short Vowel Word Families. It can also be used as an INTERVENTION for CVC practice. It can be used for HOMEWORK as well. The classrooms at my school are so diverse and this motivated me to do 2 different versions. One is for lower level and the other for a higher level. You can differentiate for the students and give them a NO PREP page on their level. It can easily be switched back and forth as needed. You can give the lower level to your whole class and switch to higher level when their ready. They will love it!!!!
