Die Herrscher und Gelehrten fanden nun erstmals Zeit und Kraft sich intensiv mit der Bildung und Erziehung zu beschäftigen. Die Kindeserziehung hatte dabei bald höchste Priorität und so entstanden zahlreiche verschiedene Bildseinrichtungen für alle Bevölkerungsschichten, es gab einheitliche Lehrmaterialien und es wurde eine Unmenge an Erziehungsbüchern verfasst. Einige der damals entstanden Bildungs- und Erziehungsmethoden kommen bis in die heutige Zeit zur Anwendung. Dieser Aufsatz erörtert die verschieden Bildungs- und Erziehungsmethoden vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung in der Edo-Zeit und arbeitet deren wichtigste Merkmale heraus. Zuerst werden dabei die unterschiedlichen Bräuche und Bildungsmöglichkeiten für die verschiedenen Altersstufen fokussiert, beginnend bei den vorgeburtlichen Initiationsriten bis zur Einschulung. Danach werden die privaten und staatlichen Bildungseinrichtungen für Jugendliche näher betrachtet, wobei vor allem der Lehrplan, die Lehrmaterialen und die Beziehung zwischen Schülern und Lehren genauer untersucht wird. Obwohl in der Edo-Zeit, wie in vielen anderen Kulturen auch, die Männer den Mittelpunkt der Gesellschaft bildeten, wurde überraschenderweise auch für die Frauen in der Bildung einiges getan, daher werden die Erziehungs- und Bildungsmethoden für Mädchen noch einmal explizit erörtert. Auch von den wenigen Ausländern, die zur Edo-Zeit in Japan lebten, werden Meinungen zum japanischen Erziehungs- und Bildungssystem betrachtet und mit denen im eigenen Land verglichen.

Von Hand geschmiedetes japanisches Kochmesser Bunka 180 von Nigara. Die Messerform Bunka ist das typisch japanisches Allzweckmesser, ursprünglich für Fischer entwickelt. Es ist sehr vielseitig für Fleisch, Fisch und Gemüse einsetzbar. Auch für einen ziehenden Filetierschnitt. Die ca. 180 mm lange Klinge wurde aus SG2 Stahl gefertigt. Der renommierte Stahlhersteller Takefu Special Steel bezeichnet den Stahl als Super Gold 2 (SPG2). Es ist ein pulvermetallurgischer, rostfreier Stahl mit einigen Besonderheiten. Messer-Schmiede und Messer-Liebhaber schätzen besonders die homogene, feine Struktur, den hohen Härtegrad von 63 HRC und die außerordentliche Standfestigkeit oder Schnitthaltigkeit. Sehr markant ist das Hammering, individuell von Hand ausgeführt, so dass jedes Messer ein Unikat ist. Der Griff dieses außergewöhnlichen Messers besteht aus Birken-Holz, das mit "stabilized wood" veredelt wurde. "Stabilized Wood" ist ein Holz, das mit Acrylharz durchtränkt wurde, um seine Widerstandsfähigkeit und Haltbarkeit erheblich zu steigern. Er ist oktogonal geformt und liegt sehr gut in der Hand.
