FREE PIECED FABRIC MAKING OK players! Got your bin of scraps? Here's a step by step of 15 minutes of play... Put those strips of fabric away and dig out all your little bits... This will be 15 minutes of sewing... They go together quickly, Don't think, just sew! I have a box under my sewing table that I put all my itty bits in that I save for making fabric. Grab a handful of various sized scraps. Sew one on, press open. This is a good place to add in angles. Is it looking to straight up and down? Lay your next piece on at an angle.... You don't have to line up your seams. I stitched a piece on at an angle, now trim off the bit that sticks out... press it open. Always press your pieces as you sew them on, this will keep your allowances smooth and flat on the back. Keep adding bits... at odd angles, you do NOT need to follow your fabric edge when you do this. THINK ANGLES at all times... sew it on, trim off the bit that sticks out... Keep adding around and trim off pieces that stick out. SAVE the BITS and add them in other places or use to start a new block. Working on any edge that you can add to, keep adding bits and pieces to your made fabric. I am NOT focused on making a SQUARE, I am focused on making a usable piece of FABRIC. Once you have a piece about 7", lay your ruler over the fabric and cut your shape. Here I just followed the size of my ruler. Makes for easy cutting! At 15 minutes, I have on my ironing board, This fun block to play with. When you cut out your squares, try to cut the blocks that will give you the most angles. Save the bits you have cut off to start your next 15 minute fabric process... If your edges get to Curvy or crazy, just trim them to a straight edge. Just don't focus on making them square. You may find you are working with a pentagon or hexagon shape or some unrecognizable shape... just keep adding where you can. If you find your piece, as you practice, does not lay flat, then cut off the wavy bit. Once you cut that wavy part off, you will find "THAT wavy SCRAP" will lay flat after you cut it off. Save it and use it on your next block. You can continue adding to your blocks with made pieces and make even bigger blocks these blocks below are 13 inches square. Often times, I had 4 bits of made fabric that I pieced together... See if you can figure out where I sewn the pieces together. this one above started with the lower right hand section, I squared it off into a pentagon shape then added the top strip, then the LEFT long strip. Use strips of made fabric... You can make strips of fabric and join them around a funky shaped piece of made fabric... Can you see how this block came together? This last one, I had two large pieces of made fabric, and one strip. I cut them on curves and joined them together, then made one more strip of fabric to go across the top... The more angles you use the more interesting your block will get... and it you've made something that you can then try a new idea with! Sometimes you find a piece that is just so perfect and you don't want to cut it down... that is were your Y seams come in... or rather, PIVOT points... If you think of Y seams as pivot point it makes them seem less scary... And it's far better to try Y seams here then on some big fancy project... See where the fabric leads you... It's a good way to practice your sewing techniques that you may otherwise avoid... or not! Like I said, CUT IT OFF, and add something else... That's what your scissors are for! :-) Have a go... EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt - TUTORIAL Hi Quilty Friends! Today I'm sharing my EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt (keep on reading for the free tutorial) with the gorgeous Wild and Free Collection designed by Gracey Larson for Riley Blake Designs. The Wild and Free Main print (below) is my FAVORITE because Gracey has drawn all 50 state flowers!!! This collection is both beautiful and educational! PS- the Wild and Free Panel is a must as it is a map of USA with all the states and their flower! I knew I wanted a to make quit a with a floral design and I love a Grandmother's Garden Quilt, but hand sewing hexagons together would take me forever and sewing y-seams is stressful. So I used my AccuQuilt GO! Half-Hexagon die to make my quilt EASY with no hand sewing or y-seams! EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt Tutorial 53.5" x 63.5" Quilt Supplies: (12) 1/2 yards : Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson (5) 1/4 yards: Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson 0.625 yard binding: Wild and Free designed by Gracey Larson 3.5 yards Backing OR (1) Wild and Free Panel with extra (1) yard of Wild and Free Main Print plus left over fabrics AccuQuilt GO! Half-Hexagon 4 1/2" sides die AccuQuilt GO! Cutter (if using AccuQuilt GO! die for cutting) Note: If you do not have an AccuQuilt GO! or GO! Half-Hexagon die – try using Lori Holt Hexie Half Ruler Set. Just use the larger size ruler. Your quilt size may vary slightly from mine. Cutting Instructions Cut each 1/2 yard print into (3) 4 1/2" x WOF strips, then cut (12) half-hexagons with your AccuQuilt GO! Half Hexagon 4 1/2" Sides Die from each print. (Total of 144 half-hexagons) Each 4 1/2" x WOF Strip will cut (4) half-hexagons Cut each 1/4 yard print into (1) 4 1/2" X WOF strip, then cut (4) half-hexagons with your AccuQuilt GO! Half Hexagon 4 1/2" Sides Die from each print. (Total of 20 half-hexagons) There will be a total of 164 half-hexagons cut. Quilt requires 162 half-hexagons. Each full flower requires (12) half-hexagons for petals and (2) half-hexagons for flower center. Don't worry - it's super quick to cut the half-hexagons as your AccuQuilt GO! Cutter does all the work for you! Plus you can cut 6 layers of fabric at a time - yay! Cut (6) 2.5" x WOF binding strips. Note: If you do not have an AccuQuilt GO! or GO! Half-Hexagon die - try using Lori Holt Hexie Half Ruler Set. Just use the larger size ruler. Your quilt size may vary slightly from mine. Quilt Assembly Arrange your half-hexagons in your desired layout. Don't worry about the hexagon edges on the quilt sides, we will be trimming them off. No need to panic- it's just a tiny bit of trimming off so there isn't much waste at all. Layout should be (9) half-hexagons across (horizontal) and (18) half-hexagons down (vertical). Sewing Begin sewing horizontal rows together. Sew (2) half-hexagons short sides, right sides together with 1/4" seam. AccuQuilt has already trimmed the corners of your blocks so they are easy to line up and sew together. Continue until entire horizontal row has been sewn together. Row 1 Row 2 Continue sewing all (18) horizontal rows as shown above. Be careful to pay attention to placement of half-hexagons. Next sew Row (1) and Row (2) together with a 1/4"seam. I did pin each point as I like perfect points :). Repeat sewing rows together in numerical order until quilt top is complete. Trimming Quilt Using a ruler - trim the edges of the hexagons on the left and right edges of the quilt. I trimmed at the intersection of the two fabrics. This will give your quilt straight edges and it will be so much easier to bind. See diagram below. EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt will measure 53.5" x 63.5". OPTIONAL (but awesome): Pieced Backing The Wild and Free Panel is AMAZING! Plus I love a double sided quilt so I chose to use my left over fabrics for a fun pieced backing! I think this is a fun (and pretty) option to learn US Geography!!! Quilt and Bind as desired You did it! Now you have an EASY Grandmother's Garden Quilt with the gorgeous Wild and Free fabric to enjoy!!! Plus hooray for NO y-seams or hand sewing!!! I can't wait to see your quilt! Sure, squares are interesting and easy. So, why not? If you are considering making a quilt, any one of these would be a great way to begin. How, you ask? 1. Start with a square of fabric and sew it to another square. Keep adding squares to form a row until you are satisfied that the row is long enough. Thirty inches is a good start, but you can certainly make it any length you want. 2. Make several rows. If you have a square quilt in mind (equal length and width) count the squares in the first row and make that many rows. 3. Now you're ready to begin stitching the rows together. Sew two rows together matching up the squares as you go. 4. Keep going till all the rows are in place. Really, it's that simple. One of the great reasons to use simple squares is that you can use a different fabric for each square or just a few fabrics for the entire quilt. Thanks for stopping by. Please say hello.
