Early Texas Birth Records 1838-1878 Jane Sumner, Alice Gracy, and Emma S. Gentry. Many persons believe that birth records in Texas were not kept until 1903. However, the Texas Constitution Convention of 1869 called for the registration of births, deaths and marriages in every organized county and such was set up by legislative action in 1873 and repealed in 1876. A few counties continued to keep birth records of which the number was 43 counties. Of these, 25 counties had their original books. My mom's sister, Melba, and her husband, John Moore were circus performers during the late 1940's and early 1950's. They were acrobats and aerialist. This is an article that appeared in the Wichita Falls, Texas, newspaper in 1948. Aunt Melba is the acrobat in the upper right photo and in the balancing act in the lower right. She was billed as "the sweetheart of the circus". Uncle John is sitting in the chair on the high wire in the upper left photo and is a clown in the upper middle photo.

In the American Old West, a saloon designates a café or hotel. The first was established in 1822 at Brown's Hole, Wyoming, between Colorado and Utah, to serve trappers during the harsh fur season. The popularity of these establishments is attested by the fact that even a city of 3,000 inhabitants, such as Livingston (Montana), recorded up to 33 saloons in 1883. Who goes to the saloon? Cowboys to negotiate cattle, drink alcohol, play poker... There are trappers, travelers, gold diggers, soldiers, lawyers, railwaymen ... The myth of the smoky saloon was born. Many saloons welcome their clients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are often accused of being propitious to scenes of "general fights", or pistol duels that end in shootings in the street or public hangings. William Randolph Hearst was one of the most colorful and important figures of turn-of-the-century America, a man who changed the face of American journalism and whose influence extends to the present day. Born to great wealth--his father was a partial owner of four fabulously rich mines--Hearst began his career in his early twenties by revitalizing a rundown newspaper, the San Franciso Examiner. Going to Court in Texas, drawn from original sources, depicts the early days of the practice of law in Texas through the eyes of one of its ablest practitioners, Charles DeMorse. DeMorse was a lawyer from New York who came to Texas in 1836 to fight in the War for Independence and never left. For forty-six years, he practiced law and was the owner and editor of The Northern Standard, a weekly newspaper that would become the second largest in circulation in Texas. At that time in Texas, the populations of individual counties were never large enough to require a resident judge or bar. Instead, judges, the prosecuting attorney and the rest of the trial bar (attorney DeMorse among them), would “ride the circuit” twice annually, going from county to county within their district, and spending a week or more in each county seat trying cases. Journalist DeMorse, in his reports home to the readers of The Standard described the practice of law in those first days in courthouses of all descriptions, including under trees; the treks from county seat to county seat, often through barely tamed country and in difficult weather; his companion lawyers and judges; the festivities surrounding “Court Week” in each town; the wondrous people and things encountered en route; and the impending War Between the States. Early in September 2011, a raging wildfire destroyed 600 homes in and around the city of Bastrop in central Texas. A few weeks later an article in the Austin American-Statesman newspaper carried this headline: “People who lost the most, focus on what wasn’t lost.” The article described the community’s outpouring of generosity and the realization of those who received help that neighbors, friends, and community were worth far more than anything they lost. The writer of Hebrews reminded first-century followers of Jesus to recall how they had bravely endured persecution early in their life of faith. They stood their ground in the face of insults and oppression, standing side by side with other believers (Heb. 10:32-33). “You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions” (v. 34). Their focus was not on what they had lost but on eternal things that could not be taken from them. Jesus told His followers, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21). As we focus on the Lord and all that we have in Him, even our most precious possessions can be held lightly.
