The foundation for which Class Two mathematics is built upon was laid last year with fairy tale images that introduced the four math processes. Now, the 2nd Graders strengthen their skills throughout the year with Saintly/Hero images and mischievous animal characters. These types of images are beneficial to the children's consciousness, at this age, because the children are starting to realize the duality within themselves. They will be observing saintliness and mischievousness in themselves and in others. The legends of saints and heroes appeal to the child’s moral sense of what is right and good and magical. While on the other hand, the fables give the child an external view of our animal nature. Our shortcomings are played out in fables. Children are able to reflect upon them without judgement of themselves. This space allows them to exercise their own will with the possibility of their actions being guided by their saintly self. These math blocks use the heroic images of Robin Hood and his Band of Merry Men & Merry Women to appeal to the children’s Saintly self. The Robin Hood ballads have been told many ways throughout history. This two part story is an original creation of these tales. The children will be participating in a living way with Robin Hood through the story. The mathematical topics covered in the two part Robin Hood story are: * Continued Practice of the Four Processes with reduced use of manipulatives. * Introduce and understand Time. * Introduce and understand Coins. * Memorizing simple Addition facts up to 24. * Become proficient with Addition and Subtraction of two digit numbers. * Practice memorization of Multiplication and Division tables through 12. * Introduce and develop an understanding of place value. * Introduce and develop carrying and borrowing. * Experience through movement and art how geometric patterns and numbers relate. * Develop a love of math through games and puzzles. * Cultivate a greater capacity for mental math. * Understand the importance of form and organization of written practice of math problems. Upon purchase you will receive all the material you will need to design two complete 2nd grade math blocks. These two math blocks include: * A two part Robin Hood story * Main Lesson book work suggestions * Word problems * Math games * Art lessons that are relevant to the story * Skills Practice section with kinesthetic learning exercises * Songs and poetry suggestions * Practice Book ideas * Weekly suggested rhythm * Blank weekly rhythm forms to design this block to meet your families needs and meet the children right where they are academically and spiritually. It is 60 pages of math curriculum that provides everything you need to teach math to Class Two students. It is two complete Waldorf Math Blocks. This is the downloadable version, meaning you will receive a 60 page PDF that can either be printed by you (and bound if you prefer) or used right from your computer. Since this is a download, I am unable to do refunds as there is no way for you to return it. Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping by! I have to tell you, I am loving this whole blogging thing. I hope to learn how to upload some of my printables very soon. Check back again for things like that! There were two activities that ended up being our favorites today! The first one is math related. We have been working on "area" of shapes. The kids have really caught on to simple area, so I decided to challenge them a bit. I gave them a piece of one inch grid paper. They had to use the squares to create one of the animals we have been studying. After a practice sheet, they had to recreate it with markers on a new piece. When finished, they had to document the area of their animal. Fantastic job kids!!! By the look on their faces, I know they were enjoying every minute of it!! Take a look!! practicing area with animal shapes It's a moose, of course! Cute Coyote! Sweet Skunk!! Terrific Turtle! Our next favorite thing was learning about fireflies!!! Fascinating insects! After reading some of our favorite firefly books and poems, enjoying interaction with a firefly in a jar, we practiced the firefly lifecycle, wrote a list of things that also light up the night sky (sorry I don't have a pic of that) and then worked on a craft connection. The kids were given a paper jar to cut out...tricky cutting out the inside! :) The jars were laminated and the film was left in the middle. We then fingerprinted the wings of fireflies with glow in the dark neon paint. Add a silver sharpie body and voila!! So cute!! The kids had a ball!! We will hang these from the ceiling!! Have you seen these?? Battery operated firefly in a jar!! LOOOOOOVE IT!! Click here for your copy! :) Glowing fireflies in a jar! Another awesome day in first grade!!! Thanks for taking a peek!! Have a Glowing tomorrow!! Joyfully! Nancy
I am LOVING my math notebooks this year! I know it's only the third week, but we have used them almost every day so far and I have a great lesson planned for tomorrow using them to review powers and exponents. Most of my students have worked with exponents before, but I have a few sixth graders that didn't cover it in their fifth grade classes last year. Because of that, and because I have some lower level students as well, I wanted to give them some notes to refer back to later. I wrote them out at first, and then realized how long it would take for my students to copy it all down. Since I have quite a few things to get through, I didn't want to spend the entire class copying notes - so, I decided to type them up ahead of time. I know this isn't a brand new idea, and I've done this before - but I used fun graphics and a different font, and.... well, I know I'm a bit of a dork. Anyways, here is a picture of the notes I made - we will fill in the charts together at the bottom, and may highlight some of the vocabulary terms. If you would like a copy of this, click here! I also decided I wanted something more interactive, so I went searching on the internet, and found this amazing idea from To A Square Inch. You take a stip of construction paper, and fold it like an accordian - make sure you fold it the number of your exponent, plus one. This will create the correct number of faces for you to write the power, each factor in expanded form, and the answer. Then, write it in. I'm hoping this will help my students make the connection that powers are NOT the base times the exponent. On the back, we will write how you read each power. Exponent Foldable - Front Exponent Foldable - Back Exponent Foldable Another Example I loved the idea, but I really wanted something that could be added to the notebook - and then I remembered something I saw on pintrest this summer where you make a pocket to glue into the notebook, and put your foldables inside of it. This is my cute little pocket I made! I think I scared my neighbor teacher a little with how excited I was about this pocket - and possibly my hubby too. I haven't been very creative or cutesy in the past with my self-made resources but I'm trying to change that this year! Exponent Card Pocket - So excited about this! I'm very excited about how my notebooks are coming along - and that I'm doing so well with my goal to use them. I haven't used stations yet, but I've scheduled a day next week to attempt them! I will let everyone know how that goes! What do you think about my newest addition to our math notebooks? What are some things you love to do in your notebooks? ~Brittany~
