When I asked Con to pick his party theme this year he was torn between sharks & pigeon. We are big Pigeon fans in this house, don’t get me wrong, but a shark party would have been so much easier, I gotta say, haha. There is nothing Pigeon out there, besides the books. And we’ve […]

FREE Pigeon Printable Straw Topper + 16th BIRD-day Milkshake | Celebrate Mo Willems birthday with easy freakshake recipe themed party idea
This year Mary Beth really wanted a birthday party based on the books by her favorite author: Mo Willems. She especially loves his Elephant and Piggie books(so most everything was based off those). And once again, my children love picking themes that are impossible to buy anything for! Ha! Oh well, at least it forces me to use my imagination(and pinterest)- right?!?!? Explanations.... the bananas were favors- based on the funny part of the book: We Are In a Book! when Piggie yells "Banana!"- we attached a little tag to the bananas depicting that scene. I used those cute ice cream cone bubbles from Target for one of the favors- connection to the book: Should I Share My Ice Cream? And of course the Pigeon had to be involved- along with his favorite foods: hot dogs and cookies. The nest was symbolic of the book: There is a Bird on Your Head! Here's us working on the "pinata"... since we weren't sure for awhile what the weather would bring, we decided to try a different approach to a pinata. We attached bowls to poster board and filled each bowl with little gifts and then covered them with tissue paper. Here's how it turned out: Each child had to answer a trivia question from one of the books in order to pick a bowl to punch. Since their teacher had read all of them this year they all got their questions right! It was a beautiful day out after all so we were able to have the party outside- which made this Mommy very happy. ;) John set up the bouncy castle and badmitten in the front yard and the kids had a blast! Her birthday cake: pink cupcakes with sprinkles and pinwheels- naturally! Raspberry(pink) lemonade with striped straws! More pictures to come!

Do you have Mo Willems fans in your family? We are huge fans of all of his books, but especially the pigeon books. I found this adorable craft today via the Learning with Literature group Pinteres…
So if you don't know who Piggie and Gerald are then you must not have an elementary age kid in your house (and if you do and don't know who they are you need to go to the library!!) The Piggie and Elephant Books by Mo Willems are my son's absolute favorite. He has read every book about 30 times each. I hear him in his room at night giggling and I know he is reading about Gerald and Piggie's shenanigans. So when I am faced with a theme for my 7 year olds' birthday party my first thought was Piggie and Gerald. So I will continue to add to this post as I create more and more for his party in 2 weeks, right now I finished a couple applique tee shirts with his favorite characters. I just did a simple applique- using felt so it won't fray and I didn't have to zig-zag stich making the outline intrusive to the desgin. I also designed a comic book style invitation for the party. More to come!!
We had a Mo Willems Pigeon birthday party for Jillian when she turned 3 this past weekend. We love the Mo Willems books - so we designed her birthday part around Mo Willems' books: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus & Pigeon Finds a Hotdog. We of course served hotdogs, brats and metts - with assorted hotdog toppings. Pigeon Puppets Hotdog Cupcakes "The Bus" from Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus The bus was a hit with all the kids!
