Federal law requires schools, colleges, and universities to provide reasonable accommodations for students who have documented learning disabilities such as dyslexia (commonly called a Specific Learning Disability). Many of these students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities need a foreign language requirement to be modified. A common accommodation is a foreign language exemption, waiver or modification. What are Foreign Language Exemptions, Waivers and Modifications? Over the years I have heard a few terms that have been used to describe foreign language accommodations in education. Here is a quick review: A foreign language exemption: Some state laws provide mandates that a student with a disability that adversely affects the ability to learn a language may be exempted from these requirements. A foreign language waiver: Some schools choose to "waive" a foreign language requirement and allow a course substitution that is approved by their foreign language department. A foreign language modification: Other schools offer a modified curriculum, with a highly skilled instructor. Most students with learning disabilities can complete a semester or two of modified foreign language study. What are Some Other Foreign Language Options? If a foreign language is required, here are two other possibilities: Take a sign language course: Sign language is a highly tactile and visual language and many students with dyslexia find it to be a relatively easy course. Ask about a foreign language substitution: Instead of learning a language, some schools allow students to opt into learning about the culture of another country. So How Can You Teach Dyslexic Learners Another Language? Because there are numerous types of dyslexia and each student with dyslexia has their own unique profile, it is important to let the student decide whether they want to try to learn a foreign language. I've seen plenty of students with dyslexia master another language. I have also witnessed students who have extreme language-based disabilities that warrant a foreign language exemption or waiver. If a student with dyslexia chooses to pursue another language, here are some strategies that can help: Offer reasonable accommodations: For a full list and discussion on accommodating students with dyslexia in the classroom CLICK HERE. Don't take off points for spelling errors: Because dyslexia impacts a students spelling, it is important not to degrade them for mistakes caused by their disability. Provide a word bank for tests: A word bank is a set of words made available to pupils to support them with their writing. It may contain words specific to the type of text they are writing, or words which they are learning to spell in their work. Using tricks to master verbs and grammar: I like to create tables with the parts of speech and grammar content students need to learn. One is filled out with the answers and others are empty. See the example to the right. Students can place the empty tables into a dry erase pocket and test themselves. They can also implement memory strategies to help them access the content during a test. Use memory strategies to assist with learning vocabulary: I often help my students with their foreign language courses by teaching them both auditory and visual memory strategies. Will Insurance Companies Pay for Academic Support Outside of School? Many families hope that their insurance coverage can help lessen the financial burden of academic assistance for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, as study skills, development of cognitive abilities and homework help is often necessary for this population. Although this appears to be a reasonable service, particularly for children that have a diagnosis, upon investigation, you will find that this is not the case. Insurance companies will often accommodate medical and mental health services, but because tutors, learning specialists and educational therapists, are trained primarily in education, they don’t have the licensing credentials and codes needed for insurance companies to cover the costs. Are There Any Tax Benefits for Tutoring for Students with Dyslexia and other Learning Disabilities? Before disregarding this option all together, there is good news. According to the IRS publication 502, under the heading Special Education, with a doctor’s note, parents can include in medical expense fees the costs for tutoring by a teacher who is trained and qualified to work with learning disabilities. Moreover, check with your employer to see if they have any other options. Some large companies, such as IBM, offer financial support for these types of services. Are There Any Tax Benefits for Special Schooling for Students with Learning Disabilities? According to the IRS publication 502, again with a doctor's note, families can be compensated for a child attending a school where the primary reason is overcoming a learning disability. So How Do I Decide on the Right Type of Services? First off, make sure that you pursue a comprehensive psycho-educational assessment. This can be done through your local school district. However, please note that many school districts often do inadequate testing, so finding a professional in your community that can do a comprehensive evaluation is best. Make sure that they provide a thorough report that discloses the underlying cognitive weaknesses associated with the learning disability. Then, find a highly-trained tutor, learning specialist or educational therapist in your area that can offer the remedial help needed. Click here to read an article on finding the right professional. Be sure to speak with each potential provider, so that you can find the best fit for your child. Early intervention and support is key for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Children with disabilities lack or are slow to master most self-care skills. With these task analysis your child will learn these steps and achieve success. In applied behavioral analysis, children are taught new tasks, and eventually to apply their knowledge to other tasks, by breaking each task down into its smallest components and mastering them one at a time. Below is an example in which the task of washing hands is broken down. Example: turn on water, soap, rub hands, wash hands, turn off water, and dry hands. With the right guidance of a task analysis the child could become independent during their daily living skill.This strategy helps the child visually follow a simple breaking down steps by step, and a great way to help a person remember what to do next and what is expected of them in task completion or goal. It also helps reduce frustrations and bad-behaviors. Task analysis are also great tool for individuals with ADHD, traumatic brain injury, dyslexia,communicative disorders and Autism. Also great for any children who is starting to first learn their daily living skills. Example of a Potty task analysis use: When a child completes each step, the caregiver takes the picture off each and every time after the step is completed. This process shows the child that the previous step is completed and is expected what to do is next. If the child gets frustrated show the child what he or she is earning, example: point at the end of the schedule what the child is earning for the child's favorite toy, cookie or book. If the child is having difficulty to complete a task make sure to use the right Prompt Hierarchy going from the next highest level of prompting necessary for the success of the student and decreasing the level of prompting You will get detail instruction of PROMPT HIERARCHY with your purchase. On Friday, December 10th, 2015 Barack Obama Signed the Every Students Succeeds Act. This new law now rewrites the No Child Left Behind Act and offers a number of changes that could have both positive and negative ramifications for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. As with any new law, the true pros and cons will be revealed over time, but here is a list of considerations. The Pros and Cons of ESSA The true test of this law lies in the specifics that will soon be defined by each state. Clearly, it will be important for advocates to speak with state representatives and be involved with the creative process so that the needs of students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities are addressed and supported. Pros of ESSA Cons of ESSA The Common Core curriculum can be adopted by states, but it is no longer required. Annually, 3rd through 8th grade students will still have to be tested in Math and English. In addition, high school students will be tested once. School accountability has shifted from the federal to the state level. Now, states will be responsible for setting academic goals and evaluating their schools. Now advocates will have to focus their attention on both federal and state mandates. There is more flexibility in how accountability tests are administered as well as the testing format. Only 1% of students (10% or students with disabilities) will qualify for alternate testing. With this cap, the testing needs of many students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities will likely be ignored. Federal proficiency goals for schools and the penalties for the failure to reach them have been eliminated. If alternative testing is granted, these students will likely receive “special diplomas” or no diplomas upon graduation. The creation of a Comprehensive Literacy Center will focus on reading difficulties for kids with disabilities like dyslexia. The center will offer information for parents and teachers as well as professional development in the areas of screening and educational tools. If students with learning disabilities don’t receive the needed testing accommodations this could limit their accessibility to higher education. ESSA will provide up to $160 million in grants on reading skills such as decoding and phonological awareness. There are no opt-out options proposed in the law. Each state will be deciding this matter. States are now required to create a plan that reduces bullying, restraints, seclusions, suspensions and expulsions. This voice-to-text technology can be a wonderful, free assistive technology device for students with dyslexia and other types of learning disabilities. What is Voice to Text Technology? Voice-to-text or dictation technology is a type of speech recognition software or program that converts the spoken word to typed text. Although there are many companies that charge for this technology, Google docs and Apple products offer this option for free. In this blog we will focus on the free tool, Voice typing, in Google docs. How Can Voice Typing Help Individuals with Learning Disabilities? Voice to Text can help individuals with learning disabilities in a number of ways, because it: resolves spelling problems. Individuals no longer have to self-generate the spelling of words. Instead, they just need to clearly pronounce the word and voice-to-text will do it for them. allows individuals to focus on the organization and content of the document instead of typing or spelling. Having more attention to focus on other aspects of writing can really help to improve writing abilities. keeps up with the writer’s thoughts. If one is distracted by a typo or difficult word to spell, it is easy to lose one's train of thought. This doesn't have to happen when using text-to-speech, as long as you speak in a loud and clear manner. How Can I Access Voice Typing? To access Voice Typing, there are two requirements. First, you must be using the Chrome browser. Voice Typing will not work on other browsers such as Safari, FireFox, or Internet Explorer. Second, you must have an internal or external microphone attached to your Mac, PC or Chromebook computer. How Can I Activate Voice Typing? In a Chrome browser, open a google document. Click the Tools menu > and select Voice typing. Click on the pop-up microphone box. Speak your text as clearly as possible. When you're finished, click the microphone again. As an educational therapist and learning specialist, hooking is one of the most valuable memory strategies that I teach my students. In fact, tedious study sessions can be transformed into a memorable and often hilarious task. What is Hooking? Hooking is a memory strategy in which you use the term itself that you are trying to remember to guide you to the answer. In other words, you search for clues in the word. You can "hook" auditorily, to the sound or sounds in the term or visually, to the way the word looks. Occasionally, you might find a hook in the word that does not guide you directly to the answer, but you can often create a story or visualization that will make it work. Visual Hooking Example: Take the Spanish word ojo. Ojo means eye, and it is easy to make the word look as though it has eyes. Auditory Hooking /memory Example: Mesa means table in Spanish. Mesa sounds like messy and I tell my students to think of a “mesa table.” Auditory/Visual Hooking Memory Examples: If a student wants to learn how many pints there are in a quart, I say that pints sounds like pines and a quart sounds like a tennis court. I then ask them to imagine two pine trees, playing tennis in a quart. Take the distributive property in mathematics. In the middle of the word you can see the word rib. I tell my students that they have to draw in the “ribs” to solve the problem. Learning about the different types of angles lends itself to some fun strategies. I tell my students that acute angles are “a cute” type of angle, obtuse are “obese” or fat angles, and right angles are “right on” and I show them that they can find the right angle in the “thumbs up” gesture. When my students are learning about the cell organelles one of my favorite hooks is for the golgi body, which manages intracellular transportation. I encourage my students to think of it as the “Go go Golgi” and ask them to visualize a shipping company like FedEx but the name is “Go Go Golgi.” Teaching Students to Create Their Own Hooks: Creating hooks for your students can be helpful, but if students create their own hooks, memory works even better. Self-generating strategies gets students to make their own personal connections and connecting new knowledge to prior knowledge is a well research technique to enhance learning. What’s more, when two people look at a term, they don’t necessarily see or hear the same strategy. So, for example, take the word, benevolent. There are many hooks that could be created to help one remember the meaning of the word, but the question is what does the student hear or see in the word? Benevolent means, kind-hearted, and you could use any of the following hooks: benevolent: If someone lent you something, that was a benevolent gesture.” benevolent: Perhaps you know of someone named Ben or Len and they are benevolent. benevolent: The Latin root means “good” and you could make that connection that good people are benevolent. be-ne-volent: When you break up the word, it sounds like “be not violent.” One could that that the opposite of violence is benevolence. benevolent: Right in the middle of the word, you can find the word love written backwards. One might think, when two people fall in love they are benevolent towards one another. Teaching the hooking strategy to your students can help them to enhance their memories and find joy and laughter while learning. I hope you found this blog post helpful! Getting a school to recognize, test, and then accommodate your child with dyslexia can be an arduous and frustrating task. Although public school systems can accommodate the individual needs of our struggling students, many administrators don’t like to tap into the general education coffers for a single student. As a result, parents often have to rally and wrestle to obtain reasonable accommodations for their children with dyslexia and other disabilities that impact learning. The key to navigating this slippery slope is to understand the laws, the lingo as well as the menus of mandated accommodations and modifications. What are my Options? There are two options for acquiring accommodations: 504: A 504 is a formal plan that protects the rights of students with disabilities in school. Covered under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, this civil rights law gives students with disabilities access to services and supports in the general education classroom. There are no mandated rules on the format or contents of a 504 plan. The only thing a school has to document in writing are their policies on 504 plans. If a student needs specialized instruction, it may be time to arrange a meeting with your school to discuss implementing an IEP instead of a 504 plan. IEP: Under IDEA, any student with a disability that requires classroom accommodations must have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Prepared by a team of school officials, teachers and parents, the IEP should include: Current academic achievement Measurable goals Progress reports Reasonable accommodations For more information and exact wording, see the U.S. Department of Education website. What is a Reasonable Accommodation? A reasonable accommodation describes an alteration of the learning environment, curriculum format, or equipment that allows an individual with dyslexia to gain access to content and/or complete assigned tasks. Overall Teaching Accommodations: Provide a consistent daily routine. Make sure documents are well organized and are not too visually dense. Preview new topics and review the vocabulary. Review old topics to assure the retention of knowledge. Use small group or one-to-one instruction. Break projects into organized activities with clear expectations and deadlines. Offer reminders to write down and turn in assignments. Offer modified/reduced in-class and homework assignments. Provide extended time for homework assignments. Check for student understanding prior to assigning homework. Offer a list of homework assignments that are accessible to the student as well as the parents. Provide a foreign language substitution, waiver, or exemption. Offer an additional set of textbooks for use at home. Allow the use of a tablet or computer to take notes or complete assignments. Listening/Reading Provide audiobooks through organizations such as RaziKids, Learning Alley or Bookshare. Provide a picture of directions and schedules. Offer extra time when reading. Shorten reading assignments. Simplify directions and highlight keywords. Provide oral directions, check for understanding, and repeat directions - if needed. Offer a larger font with less content on each page. Provide text to speech and technology. Offer Orton-Gillingham based reading instruction. Provide pre-exposures or advanced notice of reading assignments. Offer colored overlays. Provide highlighters to color code assignments and assessments. Spelling Supply the use of a computer with a spell check or a hand-held spell check. Do not penalize for incorrect spelling on classroom writing and tests. Offer a spelling bank Offer a reduced weekly spelling list Writing Supply a copy of the teacher’s or another student’s notes. You can also provide notes with a few blanks for students to fill in. Shorten writing assignments. Offer a scribe for classroom writing assignments. Allow the use of a tape recorder or a Smart Pen. Provide a computer for written assignments and tests. Provide assistive technology such as speech to text, word prediction, spell checkers and grammar checkers. Do not deduct points due to sloppy writing. Do not require the student to copy information. Mathematics Allow the use of graph paper for lining up math problems. Read word problems aloud and assist with tricky wording. Allow the use of math manipulatives and colored markers. Provide the use of a calculator or a multiplication chart. Test Taking Grant time and a half or double testing time. Offer to test in a distraction-free location. Avoid scantrons and allow the student to write directly on the test. Simplify and reword questions on language loaded tests. Provide short breaks when needed. Permit the use of a calculator during testing. Provide a word bank. Provide a scribe during tests. Allow the student to demonstrate mastery of content by answering oral questions.
