Irish sculptor Kevin Francis Gray works primarily with bronze and marble to create idealized figures draped with fabric in the style of Neoclassical or Baroque figurative sculptures. Though, unlike gods or royalty that one might expect to see rendered in such incredible detail, Gray instead creates anonymous depictions of regular individuals he encounters near his studio in London, often people struggling with addiction or other difficult, real-world issues. From an essay about Gray’s work by Rachel Wilf: The resulting works portray these subjects—often with personal histories marred by contemporary demons such as addiction—with dignity and importance, yet they also express a somber, contemplative quality emphasized by the artist’s consistent shrouding of his subject’s faces. Copenhagen based Lithuanian artist Lolita Pelegrime brings to life a striking female figure in the art print Madame E. Set against a vibrant blue backdrop, the central character draped in yellow is caught shielding her face from the direct sun. Capturing this simple yet striking gesture, Pelegrime uses thick strokes of oil paint on canvas to build up her compositions – her process adding a high level of detail and depth that helps capture a moment caught in time. Lolita Pelegrime is a Lithuanian artist, living and working in Copenhagen since 2012. Growing up with a multitude of women in her family, she developed a deep appreciation for their stories and experiences, which are often reflected in her artwork. Lolita obtained a bachelor’s degree in ceramics at the Art Academy of Vilnius, complementing her earlier education at the Kaunas School of Applied Arts and the Kaunas Antanas Martinaitis School of Art. Her paintings have been exhibited in Denmark, Lithuania, and Germany, among others. Want to add a frame?

I found this draping book at my school library (among others) and have finally gotten around to scanning it as I can't find a copy for sale anywhere. Now that it's two weeks overdue and I'm heading back to classes in a week I figure I should take care of this little tidbit, making sure I have all the information safely saved on my computer. It's a textbook from the Women's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences in Scranton, PA and was published in 1936. The entire book is 54 pages, but I'll share some of the illustrations with you all. I've got another book from 1935 that I also planned on getting scanned this afternoon and will share with you soon. I've also located my camera charger and will share pictures of the plaid outfit progress later.

Swedish artist Markus Åkesson enshrouds his subjects in elaborately patterned silks and satins, leaving only the impression of their faces, limbs, and torsos visible. An extension of his ongoing Now You See Me series, the artist’s latest paintings continue his exploration of repetition and the unsettling feelings evoked by being wrapped in fabric. By completely covering his models, they “became a secret. Instead, I started to tell a story within the pattern itself, like a sub-narrative in the painting,” he writes. More
