RI.6.2 says students should, "Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments." This product contains the following resources: Lesson Progression Suggestions about how you can use these resources to teach an engaging lesson on RI.6.2. This four-page document explains how to use each resource. Informational Passage #1 A nonfiction text about gymnastics star Gabby Douglas. This passage is about her childhood. The passage is 636 words and is written at a sixth-grade reading level. Activity This activity requires students to use details from the passage to support the central idea. Then students must determine which information from the passage is not relevant to the central idea. Write a Summary Students must write a summary of passage #1. The question is worded in a way to help students understand what they must write about in order to write a complete summary of the passage. Quiz #1 This is a five-question quiz over passage #1. There are four multiple-choice questions and one written-response question. All questions correlate to RI.6.2. Questions are written in a way to meet the rigor of the standard while not being confusing for students. The following are provided as bonus resources to help you assess or reteach RI.6.2: Informational Passage #2 This passage is about Gabby's professional gymnastics career. It is 850 words long and is written at a sixth-grade level. Quiz Over Passage #2 Includes four multiple-choice questions and one short-answer question about passage #2. All questions correlate to RI.6.2. Questions are written in a way to meet the rigor of the standard while not being confusing for students. All passages are also available in a larger font. This may be beneficial for students who need to read the passage with a larger font and more space between each line. Answer Key For All Assignments *** In addition to these paper resources, the passages are also available in Google Slides. The quizzes are also available in Google Forms. The third page of this file contains links to make copies of those resources to your Google Drive if you want.
