Todos los que fuimos niños en los años 80 nos acordamos de Wally. Esta serie de libros-juego creados por Martin Handford, y cuya primera entrega es del año 1987, causaron una auténtica fiebre por encontrar a su protagonista, que tenía un increíble don para el arte del escondite. Los mejores son los hippies. Recuerdo pasarme horas y horas con mi primo A. buscando al excursionista despistado en multitud de escenarios (y también recuerdo los piques por ver quién lo conseguía primero). Este verano, y justamente en casa de mis tíos, mi hija M. descubrió los libros de Wally y, aunque todavía es un poco pequeña, la fiebre de buscar a Wally se apoderó de ella irremediablemente. Un tesoro rescatado del olvido Me dio una gran alegría volver a encontrarme con esos libros después de tantos años y volver a sentirme como en los momentos que los devorábamos cuando pasaba los fines de semana con mi primo. Lo que no recordaba es que ¡era tan difícil encontrarle! En el primer tomo una lo va consiguiendo. pero el segundo y el tercero se complican muchísimo (miles de figuras abigarradas que no dejan un hueco libre. Todo un horror vacui). M. se tiraba todos los días en el suelo o en la cama a mirarlos, y mientras buscaba a Wally se le olvidaban los 40 grados de julio que nos asfixiaban y no nos dejaban salir a la calle hasta unas horas más tarde. Tampoco me acordaba de que los dibujos eran tan graciosos. En las escenas pasan muchísimas cosas y hay un montón de chistes visuales bastante conseguidos. En todos ellos, además de a Wally, hay que buscar una lista de cosas, personajes y situaciones que están especificados en la última página. Wally viaja por todo el mundo y épocas de la Historia (dependiendo del libro), y siempre va vestido igual: jersey rojo y blanco de rayas horizontales, gafas, pantalones vaqueros y un gorro de lana. Otros personajes que también aparecen repetidamente son su novia Wenda (que va vestida igual que él), su perro Woof o el mago Barbablanca. Martin Handford se hizo de oro con esta serie que se tradujo a muchos idiomas (aunque el texto era lo de menos), y su protagonista paso a llamarse Walter, Uberto o Waldo según el país. A ver quién es el valiente que se atreve a buscar a Wally en el fondo del mar. Los libros de Wally inauguraron la subserie infantil de "libros de busca y encuentra" de los que ahora hay de todos los estilos y pelajes. Redescubriéndolos con M. me he dado cuenta de que además de ser muy divertidos están bien para entrenar la agudeza visual y que los niños cojan gusto a fijarse en los detalles.
