I Wrecked My House” will forever be a favorite. I love the styled shelves on the exterior of the door, and the spacious pantry once pushing it open. Instead of a standard pantry door, the shelves add a place for decor and storage. We were also able to make this pantry larger by taking space from the neighboring coat closet! 2 | Hidden Desk [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-kids-paintings.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-Secret-Chairs.jpg?v=1687999007 %] I’m pretty proud of this one! From first glance, you wouldn’t think this is a desk, it simply looks like a piece of furniture that helps store and organize supplies, books, and crafts, right?! But the secret is, I had this custom built to create a hidden desk. The desk doesn’t take away from the dining room area, instead it creatively saves space. In Season 3, Episode 9 of “HELP! I Wrecked My House”, I incorporated a Murphy bed into an office. While that cleared up a lot of space in the room, I wanted something more. I decided on custom built-ins installed onto each side of the bed that created both a nightstand and small closet. For a family of game-night lovers, I had to make this work. So when it’s time for dinner and hosting guests, the dining table exists, and when it’s time for some fun and friendly competition, the top of the table comes off to showcase the full-sized pool table. Not to mention, the pool sticks and billiard balls are hidden in the dining room bench. This hidden play area is featured under a kitchen island, because, why not?! It’s a creative space for the kids to hang out, imagine, and create. I love this idea to save space but still have a dedicated space to play. On Season 2, Episode 3 of “HELP! I Wrecked My House”, this custom hidden TV was the star of the show. While I do love and utilize Frame TVs in projects, this takes it to the next level. Controlled by a remote, the artwork moves up and down covering the TV when it’s not being used. 7 | Hidden Playroom [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-hazel-in-secret-room.jpg?v=1687999007 %] [% article-gallery image_1:https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1656/6339/files/Jasmines-Favorite-Secret-Rooms-Over-the-Years-hazel-sitting-in-secret-room-painting.jpg?v=1687999006 %] In one of my more recent projects, Camp Roth, I created a secret playroom in our basement. Removing the back of the dresser, I utilized the space under the staircase to create Hazel’s dream play area. So from the outside, you would never know there’s an entire room in here! You have or had troubles with reading aloud. You have or had trouble with words problems in math. You have or had trouble understanding jokes, punchlines, sarcasm and inferences. You have or had trouble following a series of written or aural directions. You have or had trouble mispronouncing words. You have or had trouble rhyming words. You have or had trouble telling directions. You have or had trouble recalling names or words. You have or had trouble with spelling You have or had trouble learning how to read. What are Four Myths and Truths about Dyslexia? Show your child the graphic below and read the list of myths and truths out loud. Ask them to respond to each of the myths - "Have you ever felt this way?" Then read the truth and address any questions. Myth #1: People with dyslexia are not smart. Truth #1: Many dyslexic individuals are extremely bright and creative. In fact, many kids with dyslexia are gifted. Have you thought about having a class pet, but don’t want to add one more thing to take care of in your classroom? Well, I have the perfect solution---a take-home stuffed animal! Kids love it and there is no cage or tank to clean out! Having a traveling class pet was by far the most popular class pet I ever had. Kids couldn’t wait for their week to take home the pet and have it be part of their life for a few days. Of course, I had to include a journal for the kids to write in through the week. Tips for having a take-home class pet. 1. Choosing a stuffed animal is the easy part because kids love them all. But, keep the size of the pet in mind. Too large and it's difficult to transport home and then back to school. Too small and it feels too much like a toy instead of a real pet. 2. Pick a traveling bag for your pet. I like clear plastic bags so everyone can see the adorable pet inside. Make sure it's large enough to hold the pet and the journal. I found this bag on Amazon for under $10. (Search "clear plastic tote" for lots of choices.) 3. Decide on the requirements for the journal. The requirements should be based on the writing level of your students. Kindies can have a drawing journal where they draw a picture or two that shows what they did with the pet. Firsties can write a few sentences along with illustrations. For older students, they can write paragraphs and add illustrations. Make sure all requirements and suggestions are included in the journal, so kids know exactly what is expected. 4. What will you use as a journal? I like using a composition book. It's sturdy and will last the whole year. You can glue on a cover and then glue all instructions and suggestions to the inside cover. A letter home at the beginning of the year, explaining the Take-Home pet is a good idea. That way, parents know what to expect. I also let parents know the take-home schedule a few weeks in advance. That way, the schedule can be adjusted if a family needs to reschedule the pet's visit to their home. Above all, have fun. Just like a live pet, the stuffed animal pet is a great way to teach responsibility.
