Don't you just love it when your child's school give you exactly 2 days' notice to whip up a fancy dress costume! Yesterday we were told that my daughter's school were going to be having a "Harvest Themed" fancy dress day to raise money for the school. The obvious options were to go as a farmer, scarecrow or milkmaid - none of which we had at home and none of which I could persuade my daughter to go as. Apparently they're not "pretty enough." So here I am, trying to create a pretty Harvest costume out of thin air. I wanted to make an autumnal coloured skirt, which may or may not be decorated with leaves if I manage to find the time from somewhere... (as you can see, I didn't.) The Tutorial I decided to make a kind of layered, floaty tutu, but I wanted it to be slightly different from the kind that is just strips of fabric knotted around a piece of elastic. I wondered if it would be possible to make the strips twist and twirl like falling leaves as they cascaded. To make the skirt you need: - A metre or 2 each of as many different coloured nylon and polyester satin, organza and tulle fabrics you can find. (I live in a small town and so I was limited to just a few shades of habutai polyester, some lining fabric and some bright orange tulle fabric.) I already had a few remnants of other fabrics that I was able to put to use. 2 metres or so of 4cm wide ribbon. Elastic Pattern Pieces Candle lighter Scissors Thread Pins Sewing machine Print out the 3 pattern pieces, cut out the grey shapes and tape them together into one long semi-circular strip. Fold your different coloured fabric pieces up as many times as possible, allowing you to cut out 8 to 10 pieces at the same time. I found the safest way to ensure that all of the fabric was under the pattern piece was to fold it over and under like a concertina. If you have a lot more time than me, you could cut each piece out individually, which would make more economical use of your fabric, giving you a few more strips to work with. In the end I managed to cut 44 pattern pieces out of as many different fabrics I could find. To prevent the fabric edges from fraying and to give the fabric pieces more volume, singe around all the edges with a candle lighter - of course this method is only suitable for nylon and polyester. Never try this with cotton or silk and always do a test sample first over a bucket of water! The net or tulle fabric don't need to be singed as it doesn't fray. The skirt could be made completely out of tulle if you prefer, but you would need a lot more fabric and a lot more layers to get a similar effect. Once you've singed around all of the edges of your nylon and polyester fabric it's time to start assembling the layers. Before you start pinning, work out what your colour pattern is going to be. I had 5 different fabrics, all in varying quantities, so on a piece of paper, I made a note of the order I needed to arrange my fabrics so that I had an even spread of colour all around the skirt. Each piece is pinned to the previous piece at the straight edge. Overlap your pieces so that just a couple of centimetres is left exposed. Continue from left to right, staggering the overlaps until all of your fabric pieces have been used up. Alternate the direction of the curve in the pattern pieces as you work your way along the skirt. Here's a close up of the singed edges of fabric. You can see that the opacity of some of the fabrics means that you don't need nearly as much fabric, as you would with just tulle, to get quite a dense looking skirt. To make the skirt a lot more solid looking I added a circle underskirt to the whole thing. To draw the pattern for my circle skirt I used this ingenious page by the Scientific Seamstress. It's brilliant! It allows you to print out lots of pieces of paper that all tape together to form a quarter circle of concentric circles. I worked out how large the circumference of the inner circle needed to be by loosely measuring my daughter's hips and then adding a few centimetres. From that I worked out what diameter the waist hole needed to be*. This gave me the size of the cut out hole in the centre. Onto that I added double the length that I wanted the skirt to be and this gave me the diameter of the circle I needed to cut out. I hope that all made sense! *For reference, the formula for working out the diameter from the circumference is :- Diameter = Circumference divided by Pi Once all of your strip pieces have been pinned together, run a long basting stitch across all of the pieces and remove the pins. Now pin the fabric strips all the way around the edge of the inner circle. If your layered skirt is much larger than your inner skirt waist, use the basting stitches to gather it all in to the same size. By huge coincidence, my over-skirt was exactly the same size as the inner waist hole. To make the waist band, cut 2 strips of ribbon the same size at the waist, with an extra couple of centimetres for folding over. Stitch them together along one of the long edges to form the front and back of the waist band. With the wrong sides together, fold along the seam and press the seam along the right side. With the right sides together, pin the waist band into place, folding over the ends. Stitch the waist band into place. Fold the waistband over to its correct position and pin into place. Stitch the inside of the waistband into place by stitching as close as possible to the bottom edge of the front waistband. Finally, using a safety pin, thread some elastic all the way through the inside of the waistband, try it on and knot the elastic at the point where it fits comfortable but snuggly. There you have one swirly, cascading, floaty skirt, that any 6-year-old girl would love! This is another Tutu Skirt I made for 2-year-old girl, details in How to make a No-Sew Tutu Skirt. Making Tutu Skirt or Dress is easy and inexpensive, everyone can do it only if you are willing to spend few hours on it. After learning the basic techniques (that I am going to show), you can customize the color, the style or add any decorations on it, specially design for the child's fairy dress up party, Halloween costume, Christmas party, Birthday party..... Basically, you only need two major materials, they are tulle ribbon and 1/2" wide elastic. 1) Measure the waist of the kid, and cut the wide elastic to the length that minus 1" to 2" for the waistband of the tutu dress. 2) Overlap the two ends of elastic by around 1/3" and sew it with needle and thread. 3) Cut the length of tulle ribbon, but what should be the length? The distance from the waistband to the length that you would like to have, then multiply by 2 and add 1" on it. 4) If your tulle ribbon is the whole piece, you should cut it 3" wide. But the tulle ribbon that I bought is in a roll, the width is suitable for making the tutu dress. 5) Everything is ready, let's start! 6) Place the elastic around the back of chair or something that similar to it. 7) Fold one strip of tulle ribbon in half (that is the reason of mutiply by 2 in length, step 3). 8) Tie a knot around the waistband (that is the reason of add 1" in length, step 3). 9) Repeat (7) and (8), and put the second knot next to the first knot. 10) Squeeze the knots tightly after making four to five knots. Our 12-year-old daughter is really getting into drawing and painting at the moment, which makes me so happy! I’ve always been more of a ‘maker’ and she has very little interest in the crafts I enjoy, so her recent interest in art is bringing me so much joy. I love experimenting with resin art, and one of the most inexpensive ways of adding colour to resin is by adding coloured mica powders. I purchased one of these sets of Wtrcsv - 56 mica colours last year, as an affordable way of quickly stocking up on a wide selection of resin colours. My daughter spotted them and she loved how they sparkle and shine - some of them have a real, shiny, metallic quality to them. Last summer, like most people, we had to cancel our holiday because of the COVID-19 pandemic and so I made a list of family activities that we could do together at home. One of the activities I came up with was to make our own shiny, metallic paints out of school glue and mica powder. We were then to paint rocks and leave them around the park for people to find and take home. I was hoping that once they were dry, we would add pretty patterns to them, with Posca Paint Markers but my daughter loved the shiny colours so much, that she insisted that we left them as they are. While we were mixing the mica paint, and seeing how captivated she was by the colours and shine, I started thinking that the mica powders would go much further as a watercolour paint ingredient, so I decided to do some research. I found quite a few tutorials on how to make watercolour paints out of mica powders and gum Arabic - both liquid and solid. They all seemed to involve mixing a large quantity of mica powder and gum Arabic, for long periods of time, with a kind of palette knife on a sheet of glass or ceramic tile. They then skilfully transferred the shiny paint, drop by drop, into several paint pans. I’m not about to go into production and so I wondered if there was a way of accurately making much smaller quantities of shimmering watercolour paints inside the pot itself. That way, there would be significantly less waste, clean up and I would be much more inclined to make lots of different colours. I haven’t done much watercolour painting, but who knows... maybe I might even have a go myself! To accompany this blog post, I've also made a summary video, which gives a slightly better idea of how the paints turned out- After a little bit of experimenting, I came up with this very simple method of making shimmering, watercolour paints; there’s also a bit of fun science too, which children might find fascinating. Materials needed to make metallic, twinkling watercolour paints Mica powders Liquid gum Arabic. I used Jacksons liquid gum Arabic - if you're in the UK, this works out a lot cheaper. Glycerin or honey (optional) 3g screw top, clear plastic pots Permanent marker Digital scales - accurate to 2 decimal places Small spoons or scoops Cocktail sticks Large plate or mat to protect your surface. I’m using a pizza plate, but whatever you use needs to stand up to being soaked in water, to clean off the gum Arabic. The mica colours come in these resealable plastic bags. Unfortunately, it’s not the most practical of storing methods, but it does mean that you get a wide selection of colours inside a relatively small box. I’m using these 3ml, clear plastic, screw-top pots. They’re mostly designed for cosmetics, but they are also a nice size for making sample pots of watercolour paints. Write the name of the colour on the bottom of the pot in permanent marker so that you know which colour to make if you run out. I’m also thinking that these will double as colour swatches for my resin craft so that I can quickly see which colours complement each other. With the pot on the digital scales, turn them on and weigh out 1g of mica powder - I’m always very surprised by just how much powder 1g of mica is! Flatten down the mica powder with the back of the small spoon and add between 1.2g and 1.5g of liquid gum Arabic. Don’t worry, it’s virtually impossible to measure it exactly. (I should point out that most recipes for watercolour paints recommend adding a small amount of honey or glycerin. I didn't add it to the first batch of watercolours I made, but once I finished one 60ml jar of liquid gum Arabic, I added 6g of glycerin to the second full jar. The glycerin or honey are supposed to improve the rewetting qualities of the dry paints and prevent them from cracking.) Leave the gum Arabic to soak into the mica powder for 20 minutes. You can, of course, be getting on with measuring out more mica colours into different pots while you wait. Once the gum Arabic has soaked into the mica powder, stir it with a cocktail stick. You need to take care to start with, as there will probably be some dry mica powder around the edges. Draw the dry edges into the centre slowly to mix it with the gum Arabic. I discovered that mica powder and liquid gum Arabic create a non-Newtonian fluid (a fluid that doesn’t obey Newton’s law of viscosity, and changes to being more liquid, or more solid, under stress) which is very pleasing. If you stir it around you get a kind of clumpy mixture, but if you stab it quickly with a cocktail stick, it starts to turn to liquid. It’s difficult to tell from the animated gif, but this shows me repeatedly stabbing it with a cocktail stick to turn it into liquid. Use a combination of stirring and stabbing to combine both parts together. If you’re able to stab it to the point that it becomes liquid enough to cover the base then you’ve added enough gum Arabic. If you’re struggling to get it to the point where it’s an even, level liquid covering the bottom of the pot, add a drop more and keep stirring and stabbing. Once it gets to this stage, you can slam it on the table a few times, which both helps to liquify it more, and get rid of any bubbles. Then leave the lids off for 48 hours until the liquid has evaporated and you’re left with shimmering, metallic watercolour paints. I made a colour chart of all the different shimmering shades I'd made with the mica powders. The ones with an asterisk before the name had a tiny bit of glycerin added to the liquid gum Arabic. I can't say that I noticed a difference in the quality of the colours once they had dried, but I did notice that the colours with glycerin added didn't need as much water or mixing with the brush to rewet the paints. I think I may add a little more glycerin next time to see the difference that makes... I’m by no means an expert with watercolours, but here’s a card I made for my parents’ wedding anniversary using these shimmering watercolours, liquid latex and Tonic Studios Nuvo gilding flakes.
