The need to develop critical thinkers has never been as urgent as it is now. In a world that is digitally focused and where there is an outpouring of information surfeit, students need to be equipped with the right tools to live up to the new learning exigencies. Critical thinking as a skill is the mother of all other skills and one that underpins and solidify students overall learning.

Cold season is just around the corner. Those words send fear through the hearts of many moms. Just when it seems like your child is settling into a school routine - BAM - they get hit by a cold. I was surprised to learn from the CDC that school aged kids get between 8-12 colds a year. When that happens kids often stay home from school. That leaves us moms scrambling to try and find something for them to do at home. I am sharing 10 Sick Day Activities that your child can do when they are feeling under the

The best Waldorf Toys for preschoolers lovely handmade dolls to classic wood toys. Everything Waldorf www.naturalbeachliving.com
This little invention has been a hit with kids as well as teachers. I first created a Bop-o-phone out of desperation for additional xylos. The frame/box costs basically nothing, and it adds some versatility to a set of Boomwhackers. Here are easy instructions and pictures. Please post additional ideas or feedback. Enjoy! Materials needed: an empty, sturdy box that contained a case of 8.5" x 11" copy paper (usually easy to find in the faculty workroom), wide tape, a meter stick, a marker, sturdy scissors, and a about six feet of yarn or soft string. For each mallet, you will need a pencil or 10" length of 1/4" diameter dowel, a small rubber ball (party favor or from 25 cent vending machine), and glue. Step #1 (1) Begin 2 cm from the left side of the box and mark along the top edge 4 cm wide by 1 cm deep arcs, 1 cm apart. Repeat markings on opposite edge. Cut out the arcs. (Cutting from each side and meeting in the middle will give cleaner results.) Step 2 (2) Gently pull the glued seams on one side of the box apart and lay the end flap flat. Mark a line through the center of the bottom of the box from the open edge to 7" from the opposite side. Then mark a "V", extending from the center line to each corner of the box. Cut along these lines. Step #3 (3) Fold the bottom sections over each other with the "V" on top (inside), narrowing the width of the open end of the box to about 8". Then fold the end flaps up, trim/square them up, and tape your seams. (4) Place Boomwhackers in the 'cradles' in diatonic order. (You can leave some off for pentatonic activities). Tie two lengths of yarn around the box and tubes lengthwise as shown in the top picture. Tape yarn in place on bottom of box to keep it from sliding around. The yarn will keep tubes in place, and it doesn't really inhibit tone. (5) Make a mallet by carving/drilling a hole in a rubber ball, applying glue to in the hole and on the end of the dowel or pencil, and inserting the stick into the ball. (Soft rubber balls actually sound better than hard ones.) You can use the Bop-o-phone as an Orff-type instrument for ostinatos or as a melody instrument. It's very easy to convert Boomwhackers to and from this mallet format. Here's a link to my digital song collection of color-coded melodies (with ostinato suggestions), which you might find very useful and versatile: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-BIG-BOOK-of-FOLK-SONG-FUN-for-Bells-or-Boomwhackers-466033
How to make a thaumatrope. Mix art and science to teach about the persistence of vision with this old fashioned DIY toy.
I don't have to tell you that this school year is going to be unlike any other. This year, it's not only wise to establish a space inside the home that's a suitable study environment, it's essential. Without an efficient place to do homework, kids can struggle to focus, can lack the motivation to attend to their work, and can be prone to household distractions. They can also, in reaction to insufficient workspaces, develop exceedingly strange study practices which will raise eyebrows for the remainder of their existence. The habit of working on the floor, as there was no other

When my son came home from school with math homework that asked him to estimate the weight of objects, judging which was heavier, I knew it was time to make a DIY balancing scale. This idea is brainchild of Quirky Momma Deirdre Smith, aka JDaniel4’s Mom. Construction is simple. I used a wire pants hanger from the dry cleaner, yarn, and two sturdy paper cups. At the two bottom ends of the hanger, I hung yarn, to which I tied a paper cup (I’d punched holes in the paper cup just below the rim). The cardboard tube on the pants hanger kept the yarn from moving along the bottom of the hanger. Note: Make sure your cups hang equal distance. Now hang over a door knob and get ready for some math fun! My son grabbed lots of small objects. I grabbed a handful of quarters. He put an object in one cup and balanced the scale with quarters in the other cup. We recorded the weights. 1 matchbox car = 4 quarters 1 calculator = 5 quarters 1 LEGO Ninjago spinner = 5 quarters 1 mini flashlight = 6 quarters 1 yoda writing pen = 3 quarters 2 rocks = 3 quarters Now I asked him what object weighed the most. “Easy!” he said. “The flashlight!” I asked him how he knew that was the heaviest. “Because it took the most quarters to balance it.” “Why not use rocks as a unit of measurement?” I asked. This required some thought. After a long pause, he said, “Because they’re not the same size?” “YES! The quarters are a good unit of measurement because they all weigh the same. The rocks do not.” I kept the questions coming. My son was up to the challenge. “If the yoda pen and the 2 rocks both took 3 quarters each to balance the scale, what conclusion can we form?” “They weigh the same!” he said. We put them in the cups and, lo and behold, the scale was balanced. The hanger was level. When I asked my son later what his favorite part of the day was, believe it or not, our DIY scale was it. I LOVE that my son loves learning!
