Artist Dina Brodsky has many focuses to her practice, painting in miniature on canvas and paper, and recently turning to her family, friends, and Instagram community to submit trees for her to reproduce in a drawn project titled “The Secret Life of Trees.” Throughout both of these processes she remains extremely attentive to her sketchbook, filling its pages with detailed drawings of architecture, wildlife, and scattered portraits of strangers that accompany her looped handwriting. Painter Dina Brodsky (previously) records travel memories from long distance bicycling trips in small circular oil paintings. Brodsky’s style channels the heightened realism of 19th century landscape painters; whereas the historical paintings were created on enormous canvases that echoed the vast American landscape, Brodsky’s contemporary take condenses the visual impact into a token-sized work that fits in the palm of a hand. The artist describes the intention and scale of her work: I like to think that the reason my works have gotten so tiny over the years is that painting itself is partially an act of meditation, of being able to hold something still enough in my mind that I can capture an image of it. In her ballpoint pen and gouache still-life, "Tree #55," Dina Brodsky uses a sketch-like approach to capture the texture of the tree bark, and the delicacy of its branches. Brodsky creates age and evokes an almost primordial chronology through the negative space in her hashmarks, emphasizing the artifact of the tree and the design of its grain. Dina Brodsky is a contemporary realist miniaturist, painter and curator. She was educated at University of Massachusetts, Amherst and the New York Academy of Art, where she received her MFA. She lives and works in New York City. She has taught privately, and in several institutions including the Castle Hill Center for the Arts, the Long Island Academy of Fine Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Artwork dimensions: 12 x 9 in. Framed dimensions: 16 x 13.5 in.

“Bird by bird I’ve come to know the earth,” said Pablo Neruda in his book Art of Birds, a quote that has since inspired artist Dina Brodsky to begin her own exploration of birds in an ongoing miniature painting project by the same name: Bird by Bird. The artist first began the project last year as a way to explore the native birds around New York city as her now 18-month-old baby napped in a stroller. More
Trying out a yellow/orange underpainting for one more raven. The tricky thing about gouache is that it dries several shades darker than when it’s applied, so I work in multiple layers, especially in...
A Diary with Drawings and Paintings
In situ, is just another way of saying that these drawings were drawn on the spot, on site. We have met artist Dina Brodsky before here on DesignStack. The last time we had a look at her sketches of trees. Not your run of the mill ones, but the ones nature spent years working on and accomplishing magnificent designs; coming up with beautiful flowing living beings. You can find a link for them, below this written portion; have a look, when you are finished with the post. Unfortunately, there weren't names of the buildings or their locations. I usually like to add these details to the images. This time the drawings will do all the talking. The majority of the urban sketches are in black and white, but there are also color city skylines mixed with text. This last factor really adds to the finish image, by creating a lovely frame around the drawing. Have a look and see what you think... For more of Brodsky's work here on DesignStack, press this LINK. Incredibly detailed micro paintings by Dina Brodsky defy logic in their scope and depth.
