VERSES: Jeremiah 1:1-52:34 MEMORY VERSE: Jeremiah 6:16 "Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Philippians. Write "Philippians" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of class, so the students may memorize another book at home. PRAYER: Pray that we might always stay close to God's Word and listen to God as we read the Bible. SPECIAL SONG: The B-I-B-L-E (see February - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #2 on this blog. Click on orange circle to hear tune.) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: Many times the prophets of God suffered because they spoke the words of God to the people. Jeremiah was one of those prophets who suffered. Jeremiah was called the "Weeping Prophet." The people were not kind to Jeremiah and it was only because Jeremiah told the people what God wanted them to hear. God told Jeremiah to warn the people that they were not serving and obeying Him and, because they were disobedient, Jerusalem was going to be destroyed and the people would go into captivity. The people did not like what Jeremiah had to say, but that did not stop Jeremiah. Jeremiah tried his best to explain to the people that God was displeased and that they should be sorry for the things that they were doing; in fact, they should be so sorry that they would stop doing wicked things and come back to God. That is called repentance. God wanted the people to repent. Jeremiah tried teaching the people through visual aids like a potter and clay and a clay jug (Jeremiah 18, 19). God told Jeremiah to go and get a clay pot and, as Jeremiah talked to the people and told them terrible things were going to happen because they disobeyed God, Jeremiah threw the clay pot down and broke it into pieces. This was a symbol of what was going to happen to the people. They would be broken and go into captivity. But, still, the people would not listen to Jeremiah. Instead, they rejected or refused to accept Jeremiah. They tried to kill Jeremiah (Jeremiah 11:21), they put Jeremiah in stocks (Jeremiah 20:2), they put him in a dungeon (Jeremiah 38:6), and then Jeremiah was carried off into Egypt (Jeremiah 43:5-7). But Jeremiah always obeyed God and, even if he was suffering, he obeyed God and kept preaching to the people. "Older Student" Tips: Jeremiah was another prophet who wrote down the things that God wanted him to write, so the people could read God's words. He was a 'literary' prophet and that only means that he wrote down God's words. Jeremiah was considered a Major Prophet like Isaiah, but that did not mean that Jeremiah was more important than any of the other prophets, it just meant that he wrote more than some of the other prophets. ACTIVITY: Jeremiah and the clay pot (Jeremiah 19) Materials needed: 9" x 12" green construction paper, 6" x 8" brown construction paper, 6" x 12" orange construction paper, crayons, marker, scissors, tape, stapler, staples. Hand out brown paper. Round corners of brown paper to resemble a jar. Decorate and color jar. Hand out green paper. Place 'jar' in the middle of the green paper. Trace. Remove jar and cut into four pieces. Set jar pieces aside. Hand out orange paper. Fold orange paper in half. Staple two sides of paper to form a pocket. Tape pocket to BACK of green paper. Write "Jeremiah uses a clay pot to teach the people," at the top of the green paper. Write "...but they would not listen." and "Jeremiah 19" at the bottom of the green paper. After cutting jar into pieces to symbolize Jeremiah breaking the jar, put the jar 'puzzle' back together again in the middle of the green paper. When leaving class, place pieces of jar into the pocket on the back of the green paper.
Review: Last week we talked about Philip. He left Jerusalem and went to Gaza, in the desert. He saw a man from Ethiopia. He was the treasurer for the queen. The Eunuch was reading the book of Isaiah in his scrolls. Philip asked if he understood what he was reading. The eunuch said “No” and asked Philip to come on his chariot and explain it to him. When they came to water, he wanted to be baptized. The Eunuch said he believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and they both went down into the water. Philip baptized the eunuch and the eunuch returned home very happy. Lesson: Scripture is Acts 9:31-43. During this time, the church was growing, and the people feared God. As Peter was traveling through all parts of the country, he stopped to visit the Christians at Lydda (Lud daw). There was a man there named Aeneas. [I nee' as] He had been paralyzed and bedridden for 8 years. What is paralyzed? Unable to move, with loss of muscle usage or feeling. Peter told him that Jesus is the One that heals you. Get up and make your bed! He immediately got up! He didn't have to work on it or go to therapy. He just got up. And all the people that saw this miracle believed in God. In Joppa, there was a lady and her name was Tabitha. She was also called Dorcas. The Bible says she was full of good works and generous deeds. But, it happened that she became sick and then died. They washed her and laid her in an upper room. The disciples heard that Peter was close by in Lydda (Lud' daw) and sent 2 men begging Peter to come quickly. Peter did return to Joppa with them, and they took him to the upper room where Dorcas was laid out. All the widows stood by Peter, and they were crying because Dorcas had gotten sick and died. They showed him the clothing that Dorcas had made for them. Peter sent them all out of the room and knelt down and he prayed. He turned to the body and said "Tabitha, arise." She opened her eyes and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Peter held out his hand and helped her up. He called in the Christians that were there and the widows and showed them that Dorcas was alive. Remember your Bible verse for today? And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord. Remember, that was why Jesus did miracles. And the Disciples were given the ability do miracles, so people would believe in Jesus. Peter stayed many days in Joppa with a tanner named Simon. What do you think Peter did while he was there? He taught as many people as possible about Jesus and baptized them! To teach the students they can do good things for others, I have cards printed for them to design, sign and give to someone. They can make more if there is enough time, or they can take it home to finish. But I stress that they are expected to hand out the cards (or ask their parents to mail it), because it's not just a fun project. I expect them to tell someone they are thinking about them and made this card for them. I printed these on cardstock, and they are blank on the inside for the kids to design. I have stickers for them to add that are appropriate. Of course, these can be used for any lesson or activity that you want to teach thinking, praying and doing for others. Click here to download. For our project today, I took a snack to class, and we talked about Dorcas sharing, and helping people. That is what God wants us to do. Then we made a card. I printed the cards on different colors of cardstock. They picked one on the table when they came to class. The kids wrote the name of who they want to give the card to, and then signed it inside. I asked for magazines from people to cut out appropriate pictures they could use, and they added stickers. They can also draw on it to finish it and make it theirs. Here is the very plain card (I wanted them to make it theirs) to print. See the updated version above. Bible Verse: Acts 9:42 Passport: Lydda & Joppa I mentioned to the kids last week that we would be having a snack for this lesson (since Dorcas shared, I am sharing). One of the boys suggested this snack. I said, "That is a good idea, it will remind us of the Eunuch reading the book of Isaiah scrolls." These are so cute! I bought the fruit by the foot and it will make a lot of scrolls! You can see by the picture that I made 2, and there is a lot left! And the stick pretzels were a medium thickness. We are moving forward in our lessons about the Kingdom of Judah. I am so excited about this lesson....The KIDDOS will be learning how GOD is the POTTER and we are the clay. I love our WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE?? WHERE? and WHY? WALL!!!! There is so much information on this WALL. We use it often for REVIEWING what we have learned in the past!! We have our DO YOU KNOW? cards ready to go!! We have three new WORDS for our WORD WALL. The KIDDOS need to know what these words mean in order to understand the lesson. Our NEW story card is up on our "GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN" timeline. This weeks Memory Verse comes directly from the TEXT. It is GOD'S promise to Jeremiah. I LOVE the comfort and strength found in this verse!! Jeremiah 18:6 Memory Verse Song The KIDDOS will be learning this SONG during this lesson. I feel this is a VERY catchy song....so, hopefully they will be singing it throughout the next two weeks. :-) I hope their parents do not mind. It will open up the Facebook Page for HOBT GOD is the POTTER and I am the Clay---Song by Ronda Duvall I decided to have a 3D visual for this story...So, I used clip art from the cool clip art collection that I have purchased and laminated and cut out Jeremiah and the Potter. I wanted a house feel, so I also used clip art from PRINTMASTER to make the background. Then I made several different vessels out of Crayola Model Magic. I purchased the terracotta color Model Magic....I think it turned out great. (And since I am finishing this post---after teaching this lesson, I can tell you the KIDDOS LOVED this visual!!!) This is the other VISUAL I used. I had one of these pots on the table as I told the story. When I got to the part where Jeremiah breaks the clay pot in front of the Priest and elders...I threw this pot down on the ground. It broke and the KIDDOS were AWE STRUCK!! They could NOT believe it. But, it drove home the point...that once it is broken it cannot be fixed again to the former vessel. It was WONDERFUL to see the KIDDOS so IN TUNED to the LESSON. :-) As a TAKE HOME activity I decided I wanted the KIDDOS to be able to MOLD something and then REMOLD something....SO, I decided to use PLAYDOUGH. (PLEASE forgive these PICTURES---I was working on this project at home....and so, the background is my kitchen....MESS and all. :-)) I made the labels using my PRINTMASTER program. I wanted it similar to the actual label that was on the older style cups of Playdough. It used to have a little boy in a blue beret on the front...so, I inserted a picture of each of the KIDDOS in the blue beret. Glued them to the containers and called it done. During class time the KIDDOS were allowed to MOLD a vessel and then REMOLD a new vessel. We talked about how if it drys out and hardens (such as a hardened heart) that it is no longer mold-able---so we cannot afford to allow our heart to harden towards GOD. Amazingly, the KIDDOS seemed to really GET this point!!! We talked about how we need to let GOD shape us...so we need to study our Bible. BTW, this is the container of PLAYDOUGH I had ready---in case we had visitors. I believe we should always treat our guest the same way as we do our regulars....so, make sure to have TAKE HOME projects ready for your guests! Our Review Game is called "CLAY POT CATASTROPHE." It is a broken POT---and we are gonna try to put it back together. I coded the back board with questions and the answers are on the actual "clay pot." In case you are wondering....this is how I made this game. I PRINTED a large vase from my Printmaster program....I then traced it onto the backboard....Then I covered the printed pot with Terracotta Colored Crayola Model Magic. It took some ROLLING and STRETCHING to get it covered. Then I let it dry for a few days. After it was dry, I cut the jar apart into puzzle pieces. Then traced the puzzle pieces onto the backboard. Coded the backboard with the questions and wrote the answers on the "clay pot." During class time we pass out the pieces of the jar....and when I read a question the one with the correct piece of the jar gets to put it in the correct place on the backboard. Quick, Easy and Fun. Next week is our REVIEW week. Next week the KIDDOS will be making this to add to their EXPLORER JOURNAL. The 3D pot is made from the same Model Magic that I made my bigger version for the Review Game. I just shaped them in the same way and the KIDDOS will add them to their Explorer Journal Activity after they color Jeremiah and the POTTER. Here are my little "Clay Pots" drying....Remember I made these from Model Magic....They are very light and easy to glue in place. :-) Hope you have enjoyed seeing what we are doing in Bible Class.
